“Then. Now. Forever.” The WWE video leads us into the show.
We go into the Amalie Arena for Friday Night SmackDown presented by Progressive.
Sasha Banks makes her way to the ring, and Michael Cole falls all over himself shouting, “It’s Boss Time!” Banks struts her way to the ring, and some fireworks go off. Banks greets the Tampa crowd and says, “The Boss is back in business.” That means it’s Boss Time on SmackDown. She came back for the spotlight that she deserves. She’s back for the spotlight that she created. Banks promises that she’ll never let anyone steal her spotlight ever again.
Video Package: Sasha Banks attacks Bianca Belair last week on WWE SmackDown
Banks is laughing at the end of the footage. The crowd boos her. Banks says she exposed Bianca Belair last week, and it was so easy. For the past few weeks, she’s watched Belair make so many mistakes. After watching Carmella and Zelina Vega take advantage of Belair, she came out to save the SmackDown Women’s Champion. Without Banks, there’s no ESPYS or WrestleMania. Banks states that she is the greatest of all time. Any other athlete would have thanked her for turning them from a rookie to the reigning champion, but Belair had to diss her. There was no “thank you” coming out of her mouth. While she was at home, she thought of the disrespect Belair showed her week after week. Banks returned to make Belair pay.
SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair makes her way to the ring. The crowd gives her a great ovation. Belair says Banks won’t be standing or talking when she gets in the ring. Banks thinks that Belair is nothing without her, but Belair shoots that down. The last time she checked, Banks begged her to choose her after the Royal Rumble so they could main event WrestleMania and make history together. It’s not that Belair didn’t give her credit. Banks just doesn’t want her to shine. Belair rolls into the ring, so Banks rolls out. Belair asks where she’s going. Was it something she said? Is she going to take another four months off? Banks says she can do whatever she wants when she wants. When you’re a legend, you can do it. Belair says Banks is one of the great-EST to ever lace a pair of boots. If Banks wants the title, it’s on!
Zelina Vega’s music hits, and she storms down the ramp. Vega says this is not happening right now. Vega tells Belair to look at her when she’s talking to her. Is that ugly braid tied too tight? Is she lost because she can help find her in this situation? Belair warns her not to come into the ring. Vega stays on the apron. Before Banks swooped in like the ratchet little vulture she is, Belair accepted Vega’s challenge. Vega asks what Belair will do. Banks eggs it on. Belair says Vega wasn’t talking to Banks. Vega was talking to Belair because she’s the champ. Belair says she’ll see Banks at SummerSlam. Belair says she’ll fight Vega tonight! Vega smiles and nods.
Bianca Belair will defend the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Zelina Vega tonight. Michael Cole incorrectly says she’ll face Sasha Banks tonight.
Pretty basic promo from Sasha Banks to set up the #SummerSlam match. Belair was great as usual. Should be an easy win over Zelina Vega tonight. #SmackDown

Last week, Dominik helped him when he needed it. They can’t lose the momentum they have. Dominik says he won’t let Rey down and doesn’t need his help tonight.

Mysterio knocks him back and slides out of the ring to hit a sunset flip powerbomb into the barricade!
-Commercial Break-
We come back from the break to see Uso applying a chin lock to Mysterio. During the commercial break, Jimmy Uso got a cheap shot in while Jey distracted the referee. Mysterio jumps off the top rope, but Uso avoids it and superkicks him down. Uso goes to the top rope and connects with a diving splash for the win!
Winner by Pinfall: SmackDown Tag Team Champion Jey Uso
Good match with Jey Uso and Dominik Mysterio. Nothing spectacular, but everything solid. I continue to be impressed by Dominik Mysterio's poise having never had any real matches in front of real crowds before. Fast learner. #SmackDown

Footage is shown of Seth Rollins viciously attacking Edge with a camera last week. Rollins said if he couldn’t be the Universal Champion, then neither can Edge.
Edge is walking backstage. He’s asked for a response to Seth Rollins last week. Edge says Rollins is a selfish bastard. The issue between him and Rollins goes way further back. When Rollins gets here, he can meet Edge in the ring. Edge will show him what a rotten, selfish bastard he can be.
Rick Boogs is playing his guitar. Boogs says he is here to rock with the one true king in WWE: King Nakamura! King Nakamura makes his way to the ring, and Pat McAfee dances on the commentary table. Nakamura will face WWE Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews in a Championship Contenders Match next.
-Commercial Break-

Winner by Disqualification: King Nakamura
Nakamura kicks Azeez off the apron before throwing Crews into him. On the other side of the ring, Rick Boogs plays a riff and Nakamura’s music.
These Championship Contenders Matches are just the dumbest things WWE has done in a while. Pat McAfee has to say with a straight face on commentary if Nakamura beats Crews again, he'd officially be in line for a title shot. You beat the champ, you get a shot. Duh. #SmackDown

Kayla Braxton is outside WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns’ dressing room.
Video Package: John Cena takes his SummerSlam opportunity last week.
Paul Heyman walks out of the dressing room and asks what Braxton wants. She wants a comment from Roman Reigns about what transpired last week. Heyman says John Cena is thieving oxygen from Reigns on the island of relevancy and now a SummerSlam match. This contract is a joke. If he attacked Tom Brady before signing his $75 million contract, does he get the $75 million if he signs it? Cena does not deserve this match. The Tribal Chief has nothing to say about John Cena. Heyman turns into Big E, who is holding his Money in the Bank contract and laughing heartily. Heyman looks afraid and goes back in the locker room.
-Commercial Break-
WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Tamina is in the ring holding both belts with Natalya out.

Hopefully, Natalya isn't down for a long time because having Tamina out there in singles matches just isn't going to do it. #SmackDown

WWE Officials Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville are backstage when Zelina Vega walks in. She wants her SmackDown Women’s Championship match tonight. They said they couldn’t make a last minute title shot. Vega says Bianca Belair accepted her challenge twice. Deville says it doesn’t matter if Belair accepts. Belair doesn’t make matches around here. Pearce says Vega can earn her way to the title and face the winner of the SummerSlam match. Vega says she’ll prove she can beat Belair tonight.
Edge makes his way to the ring. We’ll hear from him, next.
-Commercial Break-
Edge thanks Tampa for the great reaction he got. From his understanding, Seth Rollins isn’t here tonight. Go figure. Rollins is apparently nowhere near here. Edge doesn’t blame him. It wouldn’t work out too well for Edge if Rollins was here. Edge would be in jail for what he does to him. Edge was going to let the past be just that until Rollins literally cost him the Universal Championship at Money in the Bank. If the roles were reversed, he’d have done the same thing. When he looks at Rollins, it’s like looking in a mirror of his past. When he looks in Rollins’ eyes, they both know it won’t end well for them… but it’s gotta end. If Rollins were here tonight, it would end.
Seth Rollins appears on the screen laughing. Rollins says it’s the Ultimate Opportunist. Edge really thinks he’s got it all figured out, except last week when he smashed Edge’s face with a camera. They are a lot alike and drawn together in this inevitable dance. If the Ultimate Opportunist was half the man that the Architect is, he’d know you always have to have a Plan B. Edge says he’s got a Plan B: they fight one-on-one for the first time ever at SummerSlam. Rollins says he’s got Edge wrapped around his little finger. Rollins calls the shots. The SummerSlam match… Rollins has to think about it. While Rollins is thinking, maybe Edge should as well. What is Edge getting himself into? Edge knows what happens to people when Rollins stomps faces into the mat that have healthy necks. What will happen to Edge if he does it three times with his fused neck? Edge’s career will be done. Rollins doesn’t know what kind of future Edge will have as a husband and father.
Edge tells him to keep his mouth shut. Edge says he looks like a fever dream of Russel Brand, a preacher, and Colonel Sanders. Edge helped eliminate Rollins from the 2020 Royal Rumble and eliminated him at the 2021 Royal Rumble. Rollins should have finished the job in 2014. Rollins can’t fill Edge’s footsteps. Rollins is just Edge Lite. Rollins says he’s had enough. He’s not a lite version of anything. Rollins is better than Edge in every single way. If Edge wants him one-on-one at SummerSlam, then he’s on. Edge looks pleased.
Great back and forth with Edge and Seth Rollins. I love that they brought up that random event from 2014 to add to the history. Even though Rollins has some awful fake heel tendencies, this was a success. #SmackDown

Kayla Braxton is backstage with Finn Balor, who feels he was robbed of his SummerSlam opportunity. Balor says he was close to signing a Universal Championship contract until Baron Corbin got involved. That contract was signed by John Cena. Corbin has sunk so low and should mind his own business. Balor will teach him a lesson the hard way tonight. When he’s done with Corbin, he’s got a bone to pick with John Cena.
The Street Profits make their way to the ring. They’ll face Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode next.
-Commercial Break-

Ziggler and Roode hit a double-team leg sweep/knee combo. Angelo Dawkins breaks up the pin. Roode tags back in and kicks Ford down. Ford fights back with a step-up enzuigiri.
Dawkins and Ziggler tag in. Dawkins clotheslines him and hits an avalanche. Roode runs in, but Dawkins hits a flapjack. Dawkins goes for a powerbomb on Ziggler, but Ziggler counters into a roll-up for a two count. Dawkins hits a double underhook spinning neckbreaker, but Roode breaks it up. Absolutely no doubt about that finish with Bianca Belair and Zelina Vega. Vega made a boo-boo coming back. #SmackDown

Super easy victory for Finn Balor over Baron Corbin. I like the Corbin meltdown storyline. #SmackDown
— Wrestleview.com (@wrestleview) August 7, 2021
Finn Balor grabs a microphone. Three years ago, he’d have smiled and accepted what happened last week. That Finn is dead. This Finn isn’t smiling. This Finn wants to face Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. If he has to go through John Cena to do it, then that’s what he’s willing to do. Name the place and time…
WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns makes his way to the ring with Paul Heyman.
-Commercial Break-
WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns stands in the ring with Paul Heyman. Finn Balor stares. A “Cena” chant picks up. Reigns says his special council addressed his position about last week. Reigns understands why Balor is out here running his mouth about John Cena. Reigns tried to help him and give him an opportunity. When Balor comes out on Reigns’ show, keep the Head of the Table’s name out of his mouth. Reigns throws his microphone at Balor and turns away. Balor shoves Reigns out of the ring.
Reigns is infuriated. Reigns calmly gets back on the apron and stares at Balor. The Usos then attack Balor from behind and double-team him with stomps. Jimmy Uso holds Balor up while Jey punches away at him. They hit him with a big Samoan Drop. Reigns gets off the apron and leaves Balor to his cousins. Jey Uso goes for a splash, but Balor pulls Jimmy down. Jimmy takes the splash. Balor attacks both Usos. Balor gets them out of the ring and hits a somersault senton. Reigns takes his jacket off and angrily makes his way to the ring. Balor knees Reigns getting in the ring. Reigns sends Balor to the ropes, but Balor hits a Sling Blade. Balor sizes Reigns up, but The Usos get back in the ring. Reigns hits a Superman Punch. Jey hits an Uso Splash after. Reigns punches away at Balor and applies a guillotine. Balor taps out. The Bloodline stands tall in the ring.
Another domination of a potential championship contender down the line by Roman Reigns. Reigns has looked super strong for nearly one full calendar year and has run through the regular main event division of #SmackDown. What was the point of killing Balor here?
— Wrestleview.com (@wrestleview) August 7, 2021
Just saw that John Cena is wrestling the dark match main event at the #SmackDown taping. Not sure why with the finite time you have Cena that he's not utilized on every TV show they can have him and get that audience watching.
— Wrestleview.com (@wrestleview) August 7, 2021
Overall, this was an ok episode of #SmackDown. Changing the Women's Title match to a Championship Contenders Match felt totally cheap and stupid, which hurt the show for me. The killing of Balor wasn't great either, but the action, for the most part, was solid.
