WWE SmackDown kicks off with clips from last week involving the Jeff Hardy and Elias incident. They air clips of Sheamus against Daniel Bryan where Jeff Hardy made his way down to the ring which distracted Sheamus and gave Daniel Bryan the win.
Back in the Performance Center, Jeff Hardy makes his way down to the ring. Michael Cole announces that Elias has a torn pectoral muscle and will be out for some time.
Hardy gets in the ring and says it’s great to see everyone. He says first of all he’d like to thank WWE management and Fox for giving him the time to get things off his chest. Last week the WWE Universe witnessed something awful. People’s lives were in danger and the show was thrown into chaos. And a good man Elias walked away with injuries which could have been a lot worse.
Jeff says here’s his point of view. He says he pulled up to the performance center, excited about the day, he got out of the car and bam. It felt like someone hit him with an anvil. Next thing he knew, police surrounded him and asked him questions. His clothes smelt like alcohol and he started questioning everything. Sobriety, his career, his family. How could he look at his wife and two daughters in their eyes and explain this? Hardy says he’s here for a reason, he’s in the WWE for a reason.
Hardy says it’s good to know that he’s not on this path alone because even though his head was spinning, he knew deep down in his heart that he did not slip last Friday. He says he’s in that police station, he’s passing every sobriety test. They said they saw the person come out ofis car and flee the scene but the person had red hair and a red beard. He says he was furious and he couldn’t get back here soon enough because we all know who fit that description.
He tells Sheamus he won’t get away with it. Out comes Sheamus onto the stage. He tells Jeff not to point the finger at him because all Jeff did was blame other people for his problems. Why are people like Jeff always have an excuse and blame someone else? He says his fans are worse than him, they’re enablers. The superstars in the audience boo as Sheamus tells them to shut it.
Sheamus tells Jeff for once in his life to be a man and admit what he did. But Jeff won’t because he’s not a man, he’s just a junkie. Sheamus tells Jeff not to worry about the disappointment his wife and daughters must feel after another one of his slip ups because they’re are used to it.
Jeff runs outside of the ring as the two brawl. Sheamus hits him with the Brogue Kick and throws him into the plexiglass. Sheamus celebrates as we cut to the back.
Otis is backstage with his Money in the Bank briefcase along with Mandy as they stop next to a chair. The chair has Corbin’s crown on it as Otis asks Mandy if he should go for it. She tells him to try it on as Otis wears it and Mandy tells him it looks great on him.
Corbin walks up to the chair and asks where his crown is. He asks an employee backstage where his crown is and the employee tells him he saw Otis wear it and Corbin is furious.
A solid start to SmackDown as they got the big angle from last week out of the way. Jeff Hardy got framed by Sheamus and this has to mean they have a match at Backlash. #SmackDown

Young says she will start with Bryan as AJ cuts her off. AJ says we know what Bryan will say. He will call him a coward for taking his bye to the finals while Bryan was a fool and had it not been for Jeff Hardy, Sheamus would be in the ring. Renee asks Bryan if he thinks AJ is a coward. Bryan says he does but they each have their own way of thinking.
She mentions to AJ that the Intercontinental title is the only title he hasn’t held. AJ says he took the bye to get to the final. When he looks in the mirror, he sees a champion. He says Bryan is all heart but what Bryan is doing is stupid. Bryan says he knows AJ is trying to get under his skin. They have known each other a long time, long enough to know they have two entirely different world views. And t wo entirely different visions to what it means to be the Intercontinental champion.
In AJ’s vision. he defends the title against a few opponents. Because AJ sees himself as the greatest champion of all time. But he couldn’t fathom some unexpected person coming up and shattering that vision and that is hwy AJ is a coward. However, his vision of being champion is defending that title every week on SmacvkDown. Against decorated veteran or a young up and comer. He does that for himself, he wants to learn and grow. When he thinks of being the best, it’s not who he is right now, it’s who he can be.
Bryan says when the WWE Universe puts SmackDown, he wants them to excited. That maybe their favorite superstar can finally beat him and become champion. That’s what he wants and that’s his vision.
AJ says it sounds like he wants AJ to give a hand out. He doesn’t believe in hand outs. He believes in earning an opportunity. And speaking of opportunity, how did Drew Gulak get the opportunity to be his coach? An opportunity to work in the WWE? It sounds like a hand out. And if they can agree what their visions are, he believes it’s a handout while Bryan thinks it’s an opportunity.
Styles says how about he gives Drew Gulak an opportunity, right here tonight. He calls Gulak out to the ring to get his hand out.
Gulak gets in the ring and takes out AJ Styles as Styles falls to the outside.
This is great stuff. #SmackDown https://t.co/xYY3WEAT86
