WWE SummerSlam will not be taking place in Boston this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced the suspension of all large-scale gatherings such as parades and festivals are suspended through Labor Day. Also no permit will be issued for an event that could draw a large crowd before September 7.
SummerSlam was scheduled to take place on August 23 at the TD Garden in Boston, an arena that holds about 20,000 people. Friday Night SmackDown, NXT TakeOver: Boston, and Monday Night Raw were also scheduled to take place during that weekend.
WWE has not commented on the mayor’s announcement as of this writing. We will continue to follow this story as more becomes available.
All large-scale gatherings like parades and festivals, that are permitted by the City, are suspended through Labor Day.
In the interest of public health, no permit will be issued for an event before 9/7 that could draw a large crowd. https://t.co/Sm1J8sPmUb

We are planning a healthy re-opening and an equitable recovery process—as soon as the health data tells us it is safe. But we do not envision a point this summer when it will make sense to have large crowds gathered in close contact for prolonged periods.

I can announce that parades and festivals will not take place this summer in the City of Boston,
up to and including Labor Day on September 7.— Mayor Marty Walsh (@marty_walsh) May 8, 2020
If your event brings crowds together in close contact–like a concert, a road race, or a flag raising– you should start looking at alternatives now.
