Sumie Sakai, who was the first-ever ROH Women of Honor World Champion, officially retired at Saturday night’s NJPW Battle in the Valley, which took place at the San Jose Civic.
Sakai, in her retirement match at the event, teamed with HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL and SHO) against Hiromu Takahashi, Mayu Iwatana and Yuka Sakazaki.
Below are a few of the match highlights, per Fightful.
-During the match, HOUSE OF TORTURE turned on Sumie, costing her the pinfall on Hiromu, by pulling the referee out of the ring.
-Yuka hit a spinning package, Mayu then followed up with a top rope moonsault, and Hiromu then delivered the time bomb. All three pinned Sumie for the win.
Fightful also notes that after the match, Sumie received a standing ovation from the fans in attendance. The locker room also emptied out to show Sumie their support. Yuka and Mayu also praised Sumie and Hiromu gave her his jacket. She was presented with flowers and a then a “Thank You Sumie” chant began.
The retirement ceremony for Sumie closed out with a ten bell salute for her.
