Independent wrestling star Alex Zayne suffered a substantial eye injury during this past Saturday’s Game Changer Wrestling The Coldest Winter show, which required surgery.
Zayne took to Twitter on Sunday to indicate that he suffered a ruptured globe during his death match against Jimmy Lloyd at the show in Los Angeles, and to also note that he underwent surgery to remove glass from his eye and to repair the injury.
During the match, Zayne went through panes of glass four different times, including hitting a senton through a glass pane that caused a laceration to his arm. It is not known where in the match his eye injury was injured.
Zayne would then send a follow up tweet noting the doctor said that the surgery went well, and time will tell how his body responds to the operation.
Zayne previously wrestled as Ari Sterling for WWE, appearing on the now defunct 205 Live brand. He was released by WWE last August. He has also appeared for IMPACT Wrestling and Ring of Honor.
You can see the Twitter posts from Zayne below, which includes the graphic photos of his injuries.
The Medscape website describes a Globe Rupture as the following:
Globe rupture occurs when the integrity of the outer membranes of the eye is disrupted by blunt or penetrating trauma. Any full-thickness injury to the cornea, sclera, or both is considered an open globe injury and is approached in the same manner in the acute setting. Globe rupture is an ophthalmologic emergency and requires definitive management by an ophthalmologist. Although the globe’s position within the orbit protects it from injury in many situations, damage to the posterior segment of the eye is associated with a very high frequency of permanent visual loss. Prompt recognition and ophthalmologic intervention are essential to maximizing functional outcome.
