NJPW legend Kuniaki Kobayashi passes away

New Japan Pro Wrestling issued a statement announcing that Kuniaki Kobayashi has passed away at the age of 68.

Kobayashi’s career spanned nearly three decades across several promotions in Japan, Mexico, and the United States, holding the IWGP Junior Heavyweight early in its history as just one of many accolades.

His excursions to North America saw Kobayashi head to the NWA territory in Los Angeles and the World Wrestling Federation for one-off appearances before heading back to Japan in 1982.

He is perhaps best known for his rivalries with various luchadores in Mexico, including Los Villanos, and two iterations of Tiger Mask within New Japan.

Kobayashi retired in 2000 following the last of four matches against Jushin Liger, with occasional appearances such as the 2017 edition of the Wrestle Kingdom Ranbo match while remaining extremely active within the management of the NJPW Dojo right up until his passing.

Wrestleview extends its condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Kuniaki Kobayashi.
