The Tri-State Wrestling Alliance (TWA) held its second annual Autism event on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey. This year’s theme was TWA WRESTLES AUTISM. The event was a great success as the TWA was able to help raise awareness and funds for Autism Speaks*.
The TWA was able to help Autism Speaks raise $980.00 at our event and we were also able to obtain media coverage for this great cause with a television appearance by Ryan McBride on CBS UPN 57 in Philadelphia with Ukee Washington, and articles in the New Jersey Gloucester County Times Newspaper and also in Patch.com as well as coverage from Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) Magazine.

The event card itself featured nine bouts, a family friendly show that was a combination of TWA’s trademark blend of both fun characters and also some of the most athletic professional wrestling today.
The show began with a fun Six-Man Tag Team Match, between “The Red, White & BLUE Express: Blue Meanie & Kid America and Courageous Cruz as they took on the debuting “REVOLUTION” JJ the Crew Guy, “Chick Magnet” Mozart Fontaine & “Pitbull” Timothy Richards with Sebastian Night. While REVOLUTION made a great showing and an impressive debut, it was the immensely popular trio of Meanie, America & Cruz that got the win with the help of the fan’s support.
The second match was touted by the fans as the Match of the Night, as “2010 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Rookie of the Year” Adam Cole defeated “The True Professional” Joshua Daniels in a classic match. Daniels though did not take the loss well as he attacked Cole post match and had to be stopped by TWA officials before inflicting permanent injury on Cole. Daniels has said that the TWA has not seen the last of him.
Next, members of the Great Delaware Valley Autism Speaks branch office took to the ring to say a few words about the developmental disorder and then introduced pro wrestler Ryan McBride, who has a brother on the Autism spectrum, for his match. McBride then went on to defeat “Heart Killer” Chris Wylde in another great match between two favorites.
In the fourth bout, women’s wrestling made it’s TWA debut, as the underhanded Tina San Antonio defeated crowd favorite Marti Belle.
Following the ladies, TWA presented Jessica Bullion with the Fan of the Month Award for January 2011. Jessica was presented the award by TWA Heavyweight Champion, Breaker Morant. The feel-good moment was interrupted though by Magnum of Magnum’s Modeling Agency (MMA) and TWA’s sister promotion the East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA). Magnum confronted and baited Breaker into a rage, as Breaker’s championship challenger for later in the evening, “Beautiful” Bobby Shields attacked Morant from behind. Morant was saved by none other than former long time rival, “Hitman” Tony Steston. While it is not clear whether Stetson and Morant will be sending each other Christmas cards at the end of the year, Morant did recognize and acknowledge Stetson’s assistance and showed his appreciation.
The last match-up in the first half of the show, saw the undefeated SHOCKWAVE the Robot defeat the debuting Judas Young with a quick back-slide pinfall. Young gave SHOCKWAVE his toughest challenge to date, and even evaded SHOCKWAVE’s finishing maneuver, the top rope leg drop. Judas Young has also promised to return to the TWA and says he is looking to make a big impact!!!
After intermission, the show resumed with a karate demonstration by a special needs group comprised of students on the autism spectrum. Following the demo, TWA Star “Sensei” Paul Lopresti was interrupted by the French National Anthem as the one and only bumbling Frenchman Mr. Ooh La La as he made his way to the ring in a karate gi, wearing a purple karate belt along with his trademark purple beret. Ooh La La stayed true to form, slipping on the ring steps and tripping on the ring ropes upon entering the ring. Ooh La La proceeded to mimic every martial arts move before the Sensei sent the Frenchman to “la-la land” with a sleeper hold.
In the first big upset of the night CUJO the Hellhound defeated perennial TWA favorite “Hitman” Tony Stetson, when Stetson was distracted by Magnum and Bobby Shields.
In the second big upset of the night, Commissioner Joel Goodhart named Matt Saigon and Damian Dragon as challengers to the TWA Tag Team Titles held by “Best Around” TJ Cannon and Bruce Maxwell when “Team MackTion” TJ & Kirby Mack were unable to appear at the show, and Saigon and Dragon pulled off a big upset, even surprising themselves, winning the TWA Tag Titles. Maxwell and Cannon still hold the ECWA Tag Team Titles and have vowed to win the TWA titles back, blowing the loss off as a fluke.
And in the Main Event, a Lumberjack Match for the TWA Heavyweight Title, Breaker Morant successfully defended his title against “Beautiful” Bobby Shields with Magnum. Toward the end of the match, a brawl broke out amongst the lumberjacks. Magnum seized the opportunity with the referee distracted by the lumberjacks to enter the ring for an assist, but was once again thwarted by “Hitman” Tony Stetson and a SHOVEL! After disposing of Magnum, Breaker scored the win on Shields! Shields and Magnum were not happy and following the match challenged Stetson to a GRUDGE MATCH for March 20th!
*Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. We are proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish and look forward to continued successes in the years ahead.
Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified), Asperger’s Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many parents and professionals refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders.
