In speaking with Justin Barrasso at the Undisputed, John Cena Sr. gave his thoughts on his son’s recent heel turn and upcoming retirement.
Cena Sr. said he was surprised by his son turning on Cody Rhodes, but also added this is what makes the pro wrestling business so entertaining.
“Talk about a swerve. I was pretty well taken aback by that. That’s what makes this business so entertaining–when you think you know, somebody always changes the play.”
Cena Sr., said he approved his son’s heel turn and liked how it was executed, adding that he is also a big fan of Cody Rhodes.
“I most certainly did. It was very, very well done. I’m a big fan of Cody Rhodes, and I think everyone knows how I feel about John. I can’t wait for their match at WrestleMania.”
When asked about his son’s promo at this past Monday’s Raw, he thought is was well done and the is still amazed on how WWE kept the heel turn from getting out before it happened.
“He was direct, he was to the point, and he gave us his reason for his actions. “I thought it was extremely well done. I’m still amazed he and WWE kept this all under wraps.”
Cena Sr. also spoke on how proud he is of his son’s accomplishments and how everything coming to and that it brings tears to his eyes, knowing its coming to an end.
“John’s done so much to give back…there is Make-A-Wish and there is a lot more no one knows about it. I’m very proud of what he’s accomplished and how he’s accomplished it…I get a tear in my eye thinking it’s coming to an end. I don’t think people really believe it, but I know my son. If he says this is the end, then this is it. We’re only a few months away from the last time we see John in jorts in a wrestling ring. So enjoy what you’re seeing: you’ll never see him in a wrestling ring again.”
Cena Sr. turned 80 last spring. He remains active as a Justice of the Peace, an entrepreneur and is part of the New England wrestling independent scene as Johnny Fabulous.
