In his first interview as the brand new TNA World Heavyweight Champion, Joe Hendry during an appearance on Monday’s episode of Busted Open Radio said that he wants to defend the title against former WWE Champion John Cena.
“…Let me tell you why…I have done all the things that I thought would be impossible. But in an era where anything can happen. And just before Genesis, Triple H tweeted us, Shawn Michaels tweeted the show, and John Cena, who hadn’t tweeted about it before [posted] the TNA logo on his Instagram. What kind of representative would I be for TNA if I didn’t call out John Cena?”
Hendry was asked if he thinks he has what it takes to hang on the mic with Cena, Hendry said he is confident he can.
“1000 percent. I love it, I love it,” Hendry said. “Because John Cena, when he gets that microphone, he tells the truth. And I genuinely…I honestly believe that people haven’t seen what I can truly do on the microphone yet. I feel so comfortable going out there with nothing prepared, and to me John Cena is in the top, top echelon of talkers ever in this business. And you know what? If you don’t invite that challenge to try and step up, then you’re not challenging yourself. I want it. I want it. I know how powerful he is on that microphone, but I believe that I can hang with John Cena.”
Hendry defeated Nic Nemeth at Sunday night’s TNA Genesis pay-per-view to become the new TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Nemeth won the title back at the Slammiversary pay-per-view in Montreal, QC.
During the premiere episode of WWE Raw on Netflix back on January 6, Cena kicked off his retirement tour, by declaring himself for the Men’s Royal Rumble Match.
Last week, TNA and WWE announced a multi-year deal to continue their talent sharing agreement.
