Backstage update on the status of a former NXT North American Champion

Fightful Select has provided an update on former NXT North American Champion Oba Femi.

The report notes that while Femi has not been backstage at NXT shows in recent weeks, he is still under contract with WWE. Femi last appeared on NXT programming when he failed to regain the NXT North American Title from Tony D’Angelo at the Halloween Halloween Havoc, PLE back on October 27. After his loss, there had been rumors that backstage following the show, Femi said his goodbyes, as at the time it was said he was leaving WWE. However, it is said that this was untrue.

Fightful Select notes that Femi is currently on a vacation in his home country of Nigeria. The publication also said that they have not have heard of any injuries or visa issues surrounding Femi. Sources have said that Femi should be back on NXT programming “sooner rather than later.” Another source said to Fightful Select they would be “shocked” if WWE did not extend his contract.

Femi signed his current deal with WWE back December 8, 2021, as part of the company’s Next In Line program that develops college athletes into potentially becoming future WWE Superstars. Femi made his in-ring debut on the November 18, 2022 episode of NXT Level Up, in a loss to Dante Chen.

The report concludes by noting that Shawn Michaels, Paul “Triple H” Levesque and NXT producers are all said to be impressed with Femi and his work.

Femi currently holds the record for the longest-reigning NXT North American Champion, at 273 days.
