It was previously reported that the leg/ankle injury AJ Styles suffered during his match against Carmelo Hayes on last Friday’s WWE SmackDown was part of an angle.
However, it now appears that the injury is legitimate and not part of an angle.
WWE’s Jackie Redmond took to X saying that she can confirm that Styles suffered a mid-foot ligament sprain, also known as Lisfranc injury. Styles later responded to Redmond’s message by saying he believes everything happens for a reason and that he will keep everyone updated.
Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp took to X on Monday, noting that people in WWE claimed to him that the flip where he sold the knee was to be a work and that the move where he (Styles) landed on the knee was legit. Sapp further noted that he doesn’t have much of a follow up and that hopefully we see Styles soon.
According to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline/The Wrestling Observer Styles is getting an MRI to assess the severity of his injury.
During the match, it initially looked like Styles appeared to injure his ankle mid way through the match, which was stopped early by the referee, which then brought out WWE’s medial team to check on Styles.
