Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson reportedly released by WWE

The Wrestling Observer (paid subscription), among other media outlets are reporting that Gable Steveson was released from his WWE contract on Friday.

Steveson signed a multi-year contract with WWE in 2021. He only made a few appearances at NXT house shows and had worked dark matches on some SmackDown events. His only televised match was against Baron Corbin at last year’s NXT Great American Bash, which ended in a no-contest. He made his official appearance at the 2021 SummerSlam PLE.

He began training at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando back in October 2022, after an ablation had been performed on his heart in September of that same year after he was treated for Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome.

According to the Mayo Clinic’s website, WPW is when an extra electrical pathway in the heart causes a rapid heartbeat. WPW is usually treated with medications or ablation. In some rare instances, an electric shock may be used to restore a normal rhythm.

Steveson’s last wrestled on January 5, 2024, defeating Cedric Alexander in a dark match at the SmackDown: New Year’s Revolution special on FOX.

In freestyle wrestling, Steveson won the 2020 Summer Olympic gold medal, He is also a three-time age-group world champion. In folkstyle wrestling, Steveson is a two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner, a two-time NCAA Division I national champion, and a three-time All-American, out of the University of Minnesota.

He now joins the following NXT talents, who were also released from WWE on Friday.
