R.I.P. Lizmark
This week the legendary Lizmark Sr. passed away as a result of a heart attack. Lizmark has had a long history of heart issues which originally forced him into retirement in the late 90’s, though he did return briefly in the 2000’s. Lizmark revolutionized high flying wrestling in wrestling in the early 80’s as one of the first luchadors to use springboard moves. Lizmark became a huge star in CMLL in the 80’s and early 90’s before jumping ship to the newly created AAA promotion in the early 90’s. He returned to CMLL in the mid-90’s and stayed there for the majority of the rest of his in-ring career. His son, Lizmark Jr., was one of the many luchadors that invaded WCW in the 90’s and stood out from many of the others because of his stature. Lizmark Jr. was a star in Mexico for years and also returned to America in the 2000’s as a part of the short lived Lucha Libre USA promotion as a LL-USA World Champion. Many of Lucha’s stars and promotion have already spoke out about Lizmark and how influential he was to Lucha. El Hijo del Santo even said that Lizmark was one of his idols growing up. The weird and ironic thing about his death is that he died on the very same day that Blue Demon Sr. did 15 years ago. December 16th will be a very morbid year every year for Lucha fans. R.I.P. to the legendary Lizmark and I send my condolences to his family and the entire lucha community.

AAA/LUCHA UNDERGROUND
Matanza Injured
At the second Lucha Underground TV Taping this past weekend the new Lucha Underground Champion Matanza (Jeff Cobb) was injured in a match with former Lucha Underground Champion Mil Muertes. Muertes Hip Tosses Matanza over the top rope to the floor and on the landing Matanza injured his knee. It was thought to potentially be very serious but he ended up finishing the match which ended in a no contest. An MRI revealed that he had a partial tear to his PCL but otherwise he would be fine, and will not need surgery to repair the injury. Lucha Underground certainly dodged a bullet here.
Lucha Underground 12/12 TV Taping Spoilers
1) Aztec Warfare Qualifying 4-Way: Joey Ryan def. Killshot, Cortez Castro, & Mr. Cisco
2) Lucha Underground Title Aztec Warfare: Matanza def. Fenix (c), Aerostar, Argenis, Cage, Chavo Guerrero JR., Drago, Dragon Azteca, Jack Evans, Joey Ryan, Johnny Mundo, Kingo Cuerno, Marty Martinez, Mascarita Sagrada, Mil Muertes, Pentagon Jr., PJ Black, Prince Puma, Rey Misterio Jr., Texano Jr., & The Mack to win the title!
3) Cobra Moon & Marty Martinez def. Sexy Star & The Mack
4) Lucha Underground Trios Titles Elimination Match: Ivelisse Velez, Son of Havoc, & Angelico (c) def. Disciples of Death to retain the titles!
5) The Crew (Mr. Cisco & Cortez Castro) def. Johnny Mundo & Taya Valkyrie
6) Lucha Underground Title: Matanza (c) def. Pentagon Jr. to retain the title!
* NOTES *
– Killshot had the match won in the opener but Joey Ryan snuck in and stole the pin from him.
– Fenix was announced as the Lucha Underground Champion so something obviously happened with Fenix winning the title at the last taping (I never saw spoilers for it). Catrina announced that he would have to defend his title against 19 other luchadors in Aztec Warfare and he would have to enter the match at #1! She also said that Mil Muertes would be the last entrant in the match and then announced as the second entrant, the debuting Rey Misterio Jr. to a huge pop! The match went nearly an hour and had some insane spots in it. Dragon Azteca Jr. in that match is Rey Horus in a new gimmick for Lucha Underground. He looked great at both tapings. His character is the son of the Dragon Azteca that was spoken about during season one who was killed by Black Lotus. Dragon Azteca Jr. has come to Lucha Underground for revenge. When Joey Ryan came out he handcuffed himself to the guardrail because he said no one could pin him if they couldn’t get him in the ring. As Mil Muertes entered the match Pentagon Jr. ran out and hit him with a chair from behind. This led to Rey Misterio Jr. and Puma both hitting Splashes on Muertes leading to his elimination. Catrina slapped Vampiro as Muertes chased Pentagon.
– Dario Cueto came out to a huge ovation and he said that there would be one more luchador in this match, his brother: the debuting Matanza! Matanza is Jeff Cobb in a weird mask and a jumpsuit that had dried blood all over it. Matanza was said to have been very impressive with some crazy power moves as well as high spots showing off his athletcism and strength. He didn’t sell much either in the match as they are building him as a true monster. The first person Matanza eliminated was Lucha Underground Champion Fenix which shocked everyone. Matanza ripped the handcuffs off of Ryan and beat the hell out of him. Eventually the match came down to just Rey and Matanza. They went back and forth a bit including Matanza kicking out of a 619 and eventually Matanza pinned Rey to win the title.
– Dario Cueto came out and announced that they would be holding a tournament to find a new #1 Contender for the Trios Titles, and then Pentagon Jr. came out and demanded to know why he wasn’t entered in the Aztec Warfare. Dario said that Pentagon isn’t championship material which pissed Pentagon off. Pentagon said he wanted a shot at Matanza and when Dario refused Pentagon attacked Dario and threatened to break his arm until Dario finally gave Pentagon to the match.
– Sexy Star was defeated by Melissa, in her new gimmick, in a short match.
– Cage came out to attack Johnny Mundo during his tag match with an unknown woman as his partner. Cage and Mundo had a lot of beef between each other during Aztec Warfare including Mundo hitting Cage with a brick.
– Matanza basically squashed Pentagon in the Main Event. He absolutely destroyed him and no sold any of Pentagon’s offense. Matanza threw Pentagon into the crowd, slammed him into the guardrail back first repeatedly, and slammed him into the ring post. Eventually he pinned Pentagon with a Powerslam and continued to attack him after the match. Vampiro ran out to help Pentagon but Matanza beat his ass too. Matanza put Pentagon through a table and got MAJOR heat for this from the crowd. The fans chanted for Pentagon as he was loaded on a stretcher.
