7/8 ROH: Build begins nicely for 7/24 iPPV

Recap by: Jason Namako of Wrestleview.com

After two weeks of shows not dedicated to what transpired at the Best in the World PPV last month, we finally get the fallout from Best in the World beginning this week in New York City at the terrible Terminal 5 venue. Virtual Code of Honor out of the way, let’s get to it.

Dalton Castle vs. Watanabe – Solid opener. Castle continues to remain a fun act. Watanabe put on another decent performance in his most recent ROH run. Post-match with Castle ripping on Silas Young and Silas having to be held back puts more sizzle on their continuing rivalry, nice way to kick things off.

Jay Lethal promo – Good showcase of Lethal coming off the big title win at Best in the World. Love the way they are going about things with Lethal wanting to keep both World & TV Titles and defend them, showing off how confident he is in himself and how at some point, that will cost him. Little callback to when Kurt Angle held all the TNA Titles and wanted to defend them all in 2007, except I’m sure this will be done so much better. Strong’s short, intense interaction with Lethal to put sizzle on their iPPV Title match was also well done. Strong, while not the best promo cutter, kept things concise and made the viewer be invested in him going after Lethal’s title at the iPPV on the 24th. Good stuff.

Adam Page promo – Simple promo from Page to hype up matches next week with Sydal and the iPPV with ACH, continuing their rivalry. While the Decade faction idea has seen a lot more lows than highs, the one big bright spot to come out of this has been the growth of Adam Page as a heel performer, settling in to a real nice mid-card role.

The Kingdom vs. reDRagon & Michael Elgin – Good main event. Elgin all of a sudden turning back to the babyface side is very random, but with the change back, this match got to showcase what ROH fans loved about Elgin in his long road to the ROH Title and that’s being a dominant machine and living up to the “Unbreakable” name. reDRagon looked great here on their offensive flurries, especially in O’Reilly’s interactions with his former partner in Cole. Pre and post match stuff with Cole & The Kingdom, continuing to slowly break Cole away from the faction he started has been very intriguing stuff, especially with Maria trying to play damage control in the pre-match. With Elgin’s turn and the eventual Cole turn, it allows for new, fresh title contenders for Lethal with the roles being reversed.

Overall, a good episode of ROH TV this week that did a lot of solid build towards Death Before Dishonor on the 24th.

After one more virtual Code of Honor, I bid you aideu for this week. Hope you enjoyed reading and I’ll see you next week in New York City for more of Ring of Honor Wrestling on Destination America! Have a good one!
