Report: AEW adding time on Rey Fenix’s contract due to injury

In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that AEW is adding on injury time to Rey Fenix’s current contract due to injury. Meltzer noted that that it is not quite one year.

Meltzer also said that Tony Khan made “significant offers” for Rey Fenix and his brother Penta El Zero Miedo to remain in the company, but they declined. Meltzer re-iterated that Penta will be going to WWE after his contract is up in the next two months and the word is WWE made him a competitive offer that solidified his decision to leave AEW. Meltzer further reported that Penta was frustrated that he was was not allowed on AEW shows where CMLL wrestlers were also working. This situation was rectified between AEW and CMLL. Penta has also been reportedly frustrated on how he was being used by AEW.

Back on September 21, it was first reported by PWInsider that Penta and Fenix were still currently under contract with AEW. It was also said at the time of that report, there would be interest in them from WWE if they ended up “free and clear.” The report further noted even though the two have not appeared on AEW programming as of late, a source close to the former AEW World Tag Team Champions said they have been in communication with AEW and are available to wrestle if needed.

On the same day of PWInsider’s report, Fightful Select confirmed that the Lucha Bros are still under contract with AEW. Fightful further noted in their report one source indicated the tag team’s transition to another company “won’t be as smooth as expected”, as Fenix was still believed to still be under contract with AEW.

It has been previously reported by several media outlets that Penta had stated that he and Fenix were a package deal and that he wanted to go directly to the main roster if they sign with WWE.

Penta has not wrestled for AEW since this past July, but has, however worked in Mexico seven times since then. Fenix’s last match in AEW was also this past July. He has also competed in a CMLL trios match that same month, but has not appeared for the Mexico promotion since then.
