Here are some of the highlights of Cody & Ted’s interview, provided by The Mayhem’s host, John “The Big Mosh” Masiulionis:
The Mayhem Crew welcomed Cody & Ted to the program for their first-ever MNM appearance, and both Legacy members thanked Mosh & Blade for the invitation. Right off the bat (and coming off of Mosh’s lead-in), Cody told The Mayhem Nation to “bet it all” on him & Ted capturing the Unified World Tag Team Titles from the current titleholders, Primo & Carlito.
As fans across the globe know, both Cody & Ted had played a huge role in helping their Legacy leader, “The “Legend Killer” Randy Orton, capture the WWE Championship from Triple H at last Sunday’s Backlash PPV. Ted said that coming off of the heels of that event in Providence, RI, himself & Cody have “admired the gold around Randy’s waist.” They are looking to have that similar kind of an experience happen to them very soon. Based on their recent experience of being in the ring with superstars such as Triple H & “The Animal” Batista, Ted added that “they are up for anything.” He also credits Randy for excelling in his role the leader of the team. “Working with Randy has done nothing but up our game.” Cody described Backlash as a “career-defining moment” for himself, and sees this potentially being “the first of many main-events” for Cody & himself in World Wrestling Entertainment. Their next goal they are going to be focusing on “starting something with The Colons.”
The comparisons & similarities have been made with all three Legacy members (both together & separately) with that of Evolution several years ago. Do Cody & Ted see these comparisons as a challenge? On the contrary, both Rhodes very much is embracing this opportunity. “I am very confidant in what you see is what you get…We are just beginning to see the potential (not just as a group, but as individuals), we are going to see great things from Ted DiBiase, great things from myself…things on the level with what ‘The Legend Killer’ Randy Orton has done. At the end of the day, I think that just on numbers, the age group of everyone in The Legacy, it’s going to be better than Evolution.”
There has been some speculation swirling about the newest ECW superstar & the son of the legendary “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith, D.H. Smith, joining Legacy as its fourth member & replacing Manu. Blade asked the guys who they feel would make the most-logical choice, if a fourth member will be ushered into the group. Ted’s response was very forthright: “I don’t know…Each week, it holds its own surprises…You really can’t tell the future. I wouldn’t say that D.H. would be a bad option. And who says we want a fourth member? That’s always up in the air. There’s requirements now & big expectations for anyone thinking of joining our Legacy. Cody described how many people initially thought Manu would fit the bill, but after all was said & done, he did not: “Manu is a great example. He had a pedigree & a wrestling background, but he didn’t have what it takes on any level to be in The Legacy.” He added that the main difference between himself & Ted vs. Manu was that they all acknowledged that their father did assist them to a degree with their WWE career, but that they are “done their own stuff” since their fathers “opened their door” for them. He sees D.H. as having “potential.”
RAW emanates tonight from The HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY (the hometown of “Your Home Of Wrestling Radio”), and we will be seeing Shane McMahon go one-on-one with the leader of Legacy, Randy Orton. Ted believes that the fans watching on the USA Network & those live in attendance should “expect the unexpected,” while Cody feels that we will see some closure to the whole “Shane-O-Mac”/Legacy feud, by “putting this thing to bed.”
There have also been some rumors of Ted DiBiase potentially headlining next year’s WrestleMania 26 (in Glendale, AZ) against The Undertaker, as well as possibly “ending the streak.” What are Legacy’s takes on the never-ending Internet “talk-of-the-town” rumor mill? Ted: “It’s very flattering to hear those things. Sometimes, they’re brutal…You never know what’s going to happen…It’s always up in the air…Those are hopes & dreams I want to aspire to…I would love & dream to be in that spotlight one day.” Cody: “I’ve always wanted to say this…If you are close to wrestling, you should always remember to take care of it. There are people out there who do things & say things on the Internet that are just bogus — It just hurts the product they love….Over the next couple of years, you will see it fade out a little bit.”
Both Ted & Cody wished to thank their families for helping them throughout their lives & for the hard work they put in to getting the both of them to where they are today personally & professionally. Ted especially wished to give a passionate response/declaration of admiration to his father (“The Million Dollar Man”), as well as the rest of his family: “I’ve never felt like I’ve been without a father, even though he wasn’t home a lot when I was a kid…He still had a pretty tight reign on myself…I’ve always wanted to make dad proud & do the right things.” Cody added that there is a lot of pressure on sons & daughters of legendary performers in the business to be wrestlers themselves. However, he remembers meeting his Legacy partner (Ted) for the first time, and knew this would be different. “When I met Ted DiBiase, I knew that this was going to be a good deal….You can tell something like that pretty much right off. I knew that this was a guy like me, was very proud of everything his father did & was happy to be a part of that Legacy, but also didn’t go to sleep at right without thinking what he could do.”
And as a parting shot to The Mayhem Nation, Ted also wanted to let the fans know that the release of his new film, “The Marine II” should be slated for next winter. He described the filming experience in Thailand as an “incredible time.” He was pumped to hear that the people involved in the sound/special effects for “The Matrix” were going to be involved in this picture, and that the finished product is going to be good. Cody jokingly added “It’s going to be wayyy better than Kennedy’s movie.” Rhodes does believe his place in the sports-entertainment world is not in Hollywood, but simply “being a wrestler…and at some point, be the best.”
More is discussed in this Mayhem exclusive with Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase, including their candid thoughts on why they see “not much of a competition” when it comes to the tag team scene in the WWE, what they foresee going down at The Allstate Arena in Chicago between “The Animal” Batista & Randy Orton in less than two weeks, what it has been like for Cody to have his brother (Dustin Rhodes/”Goldust”) on the road with him (and why he is glad to have this opportunity that “he thought he would never get”) & the likelihood of wseeing a Cody/Dustin feud down the line, what Ted’s expectations of his brother (Brett) are as he gets ready to come into the WWE-fold very shortly from FCW, as well as both Cody & Ted’s thoughts on Nick Hogan/Red Flair’s recent legal troubles. Be sure to check out Cody & Ted tonight (along with the rest of the RAW roster), as WWE Monday Night RAW heads your way live from The HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY. Tune into the USA Network, beginning @ 9PM ET/8PM CT!
