Gable’s Hour-Long Interview Also Includes Muhammad Ali’s Challenge to Wrestle, The Secrets to His Coaching Success and Exclusive Insights Into His Career, Family and Life
LOS ANGELES – July 7, 2014 – In an all-new episode of AXS TV’s combat-sports themed interview show THE VOICE VERSUS, Olympic wrestling gold medalist and University of Iowa coaching legend Dan Gable sits down with award-winning journalist and renowned commentator “The Voice” Michael Schiavello on Friday, July 11 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The hour-long, in-depth interview takes viewers deep into the mind of one of the most influential figures in wrestling history, revealing untold stories and exclusive insights chronicling Gable’s iconic career.
Some of the many stand-out moments include: Gable discussing his ability to flip a hyper-competitive mental switch before matches, which he says lead to his 181-1 record as a collegiate wrestler and gold medalist in the 1972 Olympic Games; how Gable successfully coached the University of Iowa men’s wrestling team to a record 16 NCAA team titles by “reaching into the soul of [his] players;” and a time when boxing legend Muhammad Ali challenged Gable to a wrestling match.
At one point during the interview, Gable shares his thoughts on the role wrestling has played in shaping the face of modern mixed martial arts and professional wrestling. He then continues as he compares the two popular sports:
Said Gable:
“Pro wrestling is for those that would want to be more into Hollywood and the movie industry. As to the real competitive edge, and that’s the MMA.”

“This interview not only illustrates Dan Gable’s unprecedented achievements in the sport of wrestling, but also the emotional toll his career took on his family and life,” said Schiavello. “Hearing him describe the impact that his anger and competitiveness had on his loved ones and then retell the moment he first heard about his sister’s murder – both give new perspectives on the man behind the legend in this must-see interview.”
