* NOTES *
– Everyone expected the surprises in the Main Event would be Averno and Sin Cara, but we were only half right there. Averno was announced as the rudo surprise and was actually using the CMLL name of Averno which was a bit shocking. The tecnico surprise turned out to just be Psycho Clown which was disappointing to the crowd. Averno ended up beating Fenix clean in the match and then the rudos continued beating on the tecnicos. Sin Cara’s “Mistico” theme music played as it did way back in February and then he appeared wearing all white making the save for the tecnicos. It was a bizarre scene as Sin Cara was not addressed by his name and was wearing all white plain gear. Averno didn’t just use his CMLL name but was even wearing his official Averno hoodie that CMLL made. AAA is back at it on 05/24 and again there are mystery spots announced for the main event on both sides. It’s pretty clear Averno is one of those but will Sin Cara actually wrestle in that match and will they give him a new name? They don’t see too worried about CMLL copywrites to be using the Averno name, and hell Ricky Marvin’s new Bengala character is using the same name as a CMLL undercard luchador.

MISC/INDY
Mexican Senator Going After Major Promotions
This week Wrestling Observer reported on an issue that Mexican Senator Diva Hadamira Gestelum Bajo has been bringing up about the classification of luchadors as “independent contractors” in major promotions in Mexico. She argues that the major promotions (CMLL and AAA for example) should not be able to classify their luchadors as “independent contractors” because they have the power to block their wrestlers from working certain shows, for example CMLL blocks their guys from working any independent shows that feature AAA talent or stars like Sin Cara or El Hijo del Santo. AAA doesn’t really care about things like that but they have blocked stars from appearing on indy shows just the same. The primary reason that the promotions, TNA and WWE do this as well, is because they don’t have to give them benefits like a regular full time employee would require. Bajo is calling for an investigation by the Mexican government over this issue. These types of things have been brought up in America but it has never really gone anywhere because let’s be honest, a politician isn’t going to go to bat for American wrestlers like a Mexican politician would be willing to do for luchadors. Wrestling is looked as a joke in mainstream America while Lucha Libre is still a huge way of life in Mexico.

LUCHA SPOTLIGHT:
ONE ON ONE WITH LUCHA LOCURA
On May 31st the SWA’s annual “WrestleMania of the Gulf Coast” super card will take place in Crestview, FL and one of the featured matches will feature the two top luchadors in the Florida/Gulf Coast area in Lucha Locura and former CHIKARA star Lince Dorado. I had a chance to speak with Lucha about the much anticipated first time matchup between he and Dorado.
JOSH BOUTWELL: This is a bit of a different matchup then fans down here in the Gulf Coast are used to seeing with your match against Lince Dorado, what are you guys looking to show them?
LUCHA LOCURA: Well even tho we both do the lucha style Lince is a bit more of an acrobatic luchador were I on the other hand mix my Lucha with so technical styles so expect a unique fast pace wrestling experience.
JB: You’re both from Puerto Rico, what are the differences in the Lucha style in Puerto Rico and Mexico?
LOCURA: Well there are a few ppl in Puerto Rico that do Lucha but it’s usually indy wrestling style that they use. Like myself Lince probably learned his art from someone else.
JB: The mask is obviously a big deal in Lucha Libre, what does your mask mean to you guys?
LOCURA: Well I’ve had many ppl ask to see my face but like I say to them our mask is our tradition. We both get our super powers from our mask
JB: Lucha, you’ve quickly become a favorite on the gulf coast but this will be potentially one of your biggest tests to date. What are your thoughts on Lince Dorado?
LOCURA: Your right it definitely is a test as Lince has done TNA and more Lucha shows wjere I have done more overseas, but like every match I study my opponent and learn everything about them. I’m definitely ready for Lince Dorado.
JB: This match has “show stealer” written all over it in my opinion, are you guys looking to go out there and steal the show?
LOCURA: Oh I’m pretty sure Lince is very competitive like myself so stealing the show is what I plan on doing. I know he would want that too.
JB: How do you plan to defeat Lince?
LOCURA: Well he has the speed so I’m just gonna have to use my strength and weight against him.
JB: Recently you faced Justin Overstreet for the AIWF World Heavyweight Championship, what are your thoughts on that match and a potential rematch?
LOCURA: I really enjoyed the match against Justin. I wish there would be no interference that way we can pull out all the stops. I hope AIWF gives me the rematch, I’m pretty sure I had the 1 2 3.
JB: Who has your favorite opponents been as of late?
LOCURA: Billy Rayz is still by far the best opponent we both gave 110% still waiting on that rematch.
JB: What are your plans for the immediate future past Mania of the Gulf Coast?
LOCURA: My future plans after Mania is to become NHW Heavyweight champion and CSW Heavyweight champion. I will pull out all the stops.
JB: Where are some of your upcoming shows fans can see you peform at?
LOCURA: Well of course SWA where I face Lince Dorado then of course NHW in june, mid month, and CSW at the end of the month.
JB: Do you have any final comments for your opponent at SWA, Lince Dorado, or for the fans?
LOCURA: For the Fan’s I say prepare yourself for a 5 star classic, we will blow the roof off. As for Lince Dorado bring your A game because I’m going to be one step ahead and ready for everything he throws at me. I even got new gear made for this show so expect my A game.
