Mike Tedesco reviews WWE Smackdown for 3/1/13

Mike Tedesco’s Smackdown Thoughts

The “Social Media Smackdown” was exactly what it advertised. It was chockfull of live commentary from Michael Cole, Josh Mathews, and Jerry Lawler telling you how to tweet and shilling the WWE App. At least they didn’t overdo it.

The show kicked off with – shocker – a match! Alberto Del Rio took on Damien Sandow in a pretty good match. Before it began, Sandow cut a really good promo to get some heat on himself and make Del Rio sympathetic. Del Rio then proceeded to make an awful joke, stating that Sandow’s breath smelled like “caca.” WWE Writing Staff: it’s 2013, and it’s WrestleMania season for goodness sake. I don’t ask for much, but can we move on from awful poop jokes at this stage of the game? It’s lazy writing. Even Del Rio can’t get behind it because his delivery is awful. I felt embarrassed for him when he did it. I felt even worse for Damien Sandow who just delivered a great promo to be met with “caca.”

I enjoyed The Miz/Antonio Cesaro match for what it was. They did a good job with it, but not seeing that second fall on TV kind of hurt the drama of the match. If you don’t have the WWE App, then you’re completely out of that match. I don’t think that’s fair because not everyone has a tablet or a smartphone. Miz comes up short, again. Is it curtains for his championship aspirations? I hope so. It’s time for Cesaro to get a new opponent.

Jim Ross was out to interview Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter… in JR’s home state (cue ominous music). JR claimed he had some tough questions, but they never got asked. Colter cut a good promo, but it was really no different from what they said on Monday night and in their YouTube videos. They finally had enough of JR poking at them and went to attack when Alberto Del Rio came out… and did absolutely nothing. I understand that we’re still over a month out from WrestleMania, but these guys need to get physical at some point. Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter are saying that Del Rio doesn’t belong in the United States and that he is stealing jobs from real Americans. I would think that would send any normal man over the edge. Would anyone just stand idly by if they were talking bad about your family? Well, I guess it depends on what your family is like. For the majority, I’d have to think that they wouldn’t. Swagger and Del Rio are way too civil for the subject matter being thrown around.

The Team Hell No/PTP match was pretty funny. Kane wearing the “goat face” blindfold got a few chuckles from me. The best thing from the match was Daniel Bryan doing that crucifix pin with one arm tied behind his bad. Say what you want about him, but that’s damn impressive.

So the moment everyone was waiting for finally happened. Fandango debuted! Well, almost. He did an interview with Matt Striker, who could not say Fandango’s name properly. Apparently you have to breathe in the “A’s.” I thought the promo was pretty funny. He says he’ll debut when Striker can get his name right. Maybe next week?

Randy Orton and Big Show were in the main event, but that wasn’t really much of a match. The Shield made their way to the ring to attack Orton after he pretty much knocked Big Show out with a neat top rope hanging DDT. Sheamus came out to even the odds, but The Shield overpowered them. All of a sudden, Big Show popped up and knocked out Roman Reigns before staring at the remaining Shield members with an “I’m going kill you” gaze. They retreated, and then he attacked Randy Orton. Sheamus then gave him a Brogue Kick to end the show. Is this the start of a Big Show face turn or are they going to form a Team Hell No-esque partnership to take out The Shield? We’ll see what happens, but I’m intrigued by what I’ve seen.

Bump of the Night: Orton hitting a top rope hanging DDT
Match of the Night: Alberto Del Rio vs. Damien Sandow * 3/4

Final Rating: ** 1/4
