Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, better known as Rey Misterio Sr., has passed away at the age of 66.
His death was announced through a brief statement shared on Facebook by one of his sons.
The lucha libre legend’s career saw Dias compete largely in Mexico, though he made a couple appearances in WCW to open and close the 1990s and competed on the United States independent circuit throughout the 2000s.
He was also a trainer, preparing his son Hijo Del Rey Mysterio and nephew Rey Misterio Jr. along with Konnan and Psicosis for their own lengthy runs in the business.
Misterio Jr. is best known for his run in WCW before being renamed Rey Mysterio upon his debut in WWE, a career that culminated in being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023.
Among the outpouring of support was the president of AAA, who posted a statement on social media:
Wrestleview extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Rey Misterio Sr.
