Former WWE/NXT talent and Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson recently took part in a press conference with the Golden Gophers wrestling head coach, Brandon Eggum.
Steveson is back with the Gophers wrestling team for one more year after winning another Olympic gold metal. He talked about his short time with WWE/NXT, his tryout with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and addressed a possible future with UFC.
On his short time in WWE, Steveson said the following:
“The WWE just wasn’t the right time. I had a lot of competitive edge in me, and they knew that, and it was not the time for it. So maybe one day, if the stars align, it’ll be a great opportunity to do it again. I have no bad feelings with it. I have no bad blood with it, and I would like to keep moving forward with everything I have going on.”
When he was asking about attending the Buffalo Bills training camp during the off season, Stevenson said he thinks the NFL is still a future option for him. He responded with the following:
“I had a few other teams reach out to me previously before coming back here so maybe after the season it’s another opportunity to get a futures deal with the team or go on from there.”
Steveson was seen training with current UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. When asked about a possible future with UFC or another MMA promotion, Steveson responded by saying “It does interest me a lot. Being with Jon was definitely an honor. Jon is the greatest fighter of all time and if you know fighting and you know wrestling and you’re a fight fan, you know Jon Jones. So, being able to be in that cage with him Saturday and seeing that belt live in person, it definitely gave me that fire back.”
After signing a multi-year deal with WWE and making his debut at SummerSlam 2021, along with other brief appearances in just under a three year period, Steveson was released from the company back on May 3, 2024. Following his release from WWE, Steveson returned to the University of Minnesota for his final year of eligibility to wrestle.
Steveson’s brother Robert wrestled in NXT under the ring name Damon Kemp. His contract expired this past July and was not renewed.
