New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority reportedly approves COVID-19 funds for 2025 WWE SummerSlam

According to reports from the Sports Business Journal and the Bergen RECORD, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority approved a resolution allocating $7.125 million to be used to assist MetLife Stadium with “securing and hosting the WWE SummerSlam” 2025.

Katie Sobko of the Bergen RECORD notes that according to the resolution, the allocated funds in part of the American Rescue Plan funding the state of New Jersey received from the federal government during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also noted that the money can be used to “respond to the negative economic impacts of the public health emergency by providing aid to impacted industries such as tourism, travel and hospitality.”

Furthermore, the report from Sobko notes the resolution also mentioned that the authority expects the big two-night event will “generate over $80 million in total economic impact for the region.” New Jersey Sports Authority spokesperson Brian Aberback told the Bergen RECORD that the agency is in the process of “finalizing its funding application” to the state Department of Community Affairs, which handles such grants. In addition, the agency also expects the “funds will be disbursed after the execution of a memorandum of understanding] with the NJDCA regarding the use of the funds.”

WWE SummerSlam will take place on Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3, 2025 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
