A report from Wrestlenomics points to a curious detail within a press release from April 2023 touting the success of WWE Clash at the Castle.
As noted in the report, the release stated that last September’s big Premium Live Event emanating from Cardiff, Wales “delivered a massive 10:1 return on investment by channelling £21.8 million back into the Welsh economy.”
This amount comes up as just under $28 million USD, implying the cost paid by the Welsh government to bring WWE to Cardiff was roughly $2.8 million USD.
This is nearly twice what the government of Puerto Rico contributed for bringing Backlash and that weekend’s SmackDown in May to the city of San Juan, $1.5 million in cash in addition to a non-monetary contribution of $300,000 to run the venue.
The detail from the press release in question comes as a follow up to the Welsh government declining to answer how much they had contributed for the event, and further confirms a past statement from WWE CEO Nick Khan that the company would look to gain subsidies for Premium Live Events.
