Gunther will defend the WWE Intercontinental Championship on next week’s episode of Raw.
It was announced on the August 14 episode of WWE Raw, that Chad Gable will challenge Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship next week. Gable earned a title opportunity on last week’s show, when he defeated Ricochet, Tommaso Ciampa, and Matt Riddle in a Fatal-Four Way. on the August 7 episode.
Back on the July 31 episode of WWE Raw, Gable defeated Gunther in the five-minute challenge. Gunther then demanded more time and then went on to defeat Gable.
Ahead of his title match opportunity on next week’s Raw, Gable defeated Imperium’s Giovanni Vinci on this week’s episode.
As of last Saturday, August 12, Gunther hit 427 days as the WWE Intercontinental Champion. He is now the second-longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history, having surpassed Pedro Morales, who held the championship for 424 days.
The current record is still held by WWE Hall of Famer Honky Tonk Man, who had a reign of 453 days. In order to pass Honky Tonk Man’s record, Gunther will need to hold the title up until September 8 to become the new longest-reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion of all-time.
Also scheduled for next week’s WWE Raw is Drew McIntyre and Matt Riddle vs. The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.
The August 21 episode of WWE Raw will take place from the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, QC.
