Wrestling superstar added to Mixed Martial Arts seminar at Gable Museum
One of wrestling’s biggest superstars will participate in a special Mixed Martial Arts seminar at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum. The seminar will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 23 in the Dan Gable Teaching Center.
The seminar is part of the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame weekend. Instructors include Dan Hodge and Greg Halsor.
Hodge, an undefeated three-time NCAA champion for the University of Oklahoma (1955-1957), is the only amateur wrestler to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He was also a junior heavyweight professional wrestling champion and a Golden Gloves boxing champion.
Hodge will provide a demonstration of submission holds.
“Danny Hodge, in my mind, was the single best wrestler of his time,” said Gerry Brisco, a member of the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. “Then you add in his boxing skills, his speed, and, most of all, his strength. I think Danny would have become the greatest MMA fighter of all time had it been available when he competed.”
Halsor has spent over 20 years in the grappling arts. He was a state wrestling champion for Cedar Falls High School in 1993 and an All-American for Wartburg in 1997. Halsor began teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2000, and is one of the highest ranking practitioners in the state.
“I am very excited to be a part of this historic weekend,” said Halsor. “As amateur wrestling helped to shape pro wrestling, its impact has been instrumental to the evolution of Mixed Martial Arts. I am also honored for the opportunity to share the stage with a living legend such as Danny Hodge. I am hoping others in will take advantage of this occasion.”
The seminar is included with a $10 admission charge to the museum. Admission includes the MMA seminar, a round table discussion with professional wrestling legends, and an autograph signing.
Terry Funk, Jim Ross, Gerald Brisco, Jim Duggan, Larry Hennig, Maurice “Mad Dog” Vachon, Jim Raschke, Danny Hodge, Dan Gable, Pat Miletich, Bob Roop, and Fritz Von Goering have confirmed that they will participate in various events throughout the weekend.
