September 4 – This day in history: Debut of WCW Monday Nitro live on TNT

On this day (September 4, 1995), WCW Monday Nitro debut on TNT, live from the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.

The debut show had a 2.9 rating cable rating. WWF Monday Night RAW did not air on the USA Network that night due to U.S. Open tennis coverage.

The results from that episode were as follows:

-The American Males (Mark Bagwell and Scott Riggs) defeated WCW World Tag Team Champions Bunkhouse Buck and Dick Slater (with Col. Robert Parker)

-Brian Pillman defeated Jushin Thunder Liger

-WCW United States Heavyweight Champion Sting defeated Ric Flair by disqualification to retain the title. During this match, Lex Luger made his surprise return to WCW.

-WCW World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan (with Jimmy Hart) defeated Big Bubba Rogers to retain the title.

Lex Lugar re-signed with WCW, after he had been working for the WWF without a contract for several weeks. Luger wrestled the night before at a WWF house show that took place in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The very last episode of WCW on TNT aired March 26, 2001 live from the Boardwalk Beach Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida. It was announced at the start of the show that WCW had been purchased by then the WWF. This began the angle of Shane McMahon revealing that he had actually bought WCW out from under his father.
