Teacher’s Lecture
The Miz wants to be “The Greatest”
I know I went over this topic on “The Teacher’s Lounge” this week, but I thought it would be fair for my readers to get my thoughts on this issue.
So, this week as I read an interview from the New York Post and the interviewed WWE Superstar The Miz. They asked him what his goals are now that he won a World Championship. The Miz said that he wanted to “become the face of the WWE.” Those simple words may not mean much to some, but to people who posted under the WrestleView comments were mainly negative (guess where the Brody is coming from this week).
There was a reason why I actually chose “The Miz” as the 2010 Wrestler of the Year in my Golden Yardstick Awards. Why do some wrestling fans hate The Miz? It is still very confusing. So I decided to make some people on these comments useful and I am going to debunk some of these theories. Personally, I think The Miz has been that “bad guy” that the WWE needed during the ever-lasting transition period for the WWE.
But before I go on with some who are upset that The Miz made those comments, I want to say that while he may not be the greatest in the WWE right now, he may be the hardest working professional wrestler in the business. Outside of John Cena, The Miz is the most marketable WWE Superstar and that is alright with business in the WWE.
The main goal in the WWE is to make a profit. Sometimes, the WWE is listening to the fans that write or voice their opinions. But 99% of the time they do not, and that should exactly be the way a business should be run.
But first, let’s look at some comments under this heading. It makes this lecture a bit comical. Besides, Mr. V is going to make some famous.
He should come out as “Mike Mizanin”.
No! He should never use his real name. Why use that while “The Miz” just rolls off the tongue so much better? That is The Miz’s identity that he created. That would be like (and YES, I am going there) someone saying that Stone Cold Steve Austin should quit being a “beer-swigging/don’t trust anybody” guy and come back to the WWE as…Steve Williams.
Look, if he uses his real name then forget it. That means a change in character and something that just won’t work. Now “The Miz”, Mr. Mizanin’s creation in a way from his past credits, works his character to perfection. When something is unblemished, why change it? One example is Dolph Ziggler changing his hair color. As the bleach blonde, foolish heel, he was a part of WrestleMania. When he went to his natural color, he was rarely seen on Raw. There, a good example of not changing your character.
Are you kidding me?
Once again, I am not kidding! The Miz is one of the faces of the current WWE product in 2011. Don’t get me wrong, John Cena is “The Face” of the company, but The Miz went from the bottom of the barrel, a laughingstock and now became the top heel in the WWE. He was the foil to John Cena’s plans for a half a year.
With so much improvement in his persona as well as what we see in the ring, The Miz has shown to many fans around here that he can be a top superstar for years to come. Yeah, call me crazy.
Shouting “I’m Awesome” doesn’t make you awesome”
Yes, it does make him “awesome”. That is a catchphrase. It worked for Cena (U Can’t See Me), Hogan (Whatcha Gonna Do?), The Rock (If you smell), Steve Austin (That’s the bottom line), Mick Foley (Have a Nice Day), and even Paul Bearer (OH YES). Those two words, while so simple, gets a reaction. Once again, an unintelligent fan does not get it. If a wrestler, entertainer, or whatnot has a catchphrase that is repeated, then that unquestionably makes that person “awesome”.
The Miz has a lame finisher, it is Jeff Jarrett’s.
Sure, it is. However, people copy others moves no matter what. However, one did make a good point (yes, a compliment) that the “Skull-Crushing Finale” should be shortened. When I take my notes for every WWE, Impact, or ROH show I always try to abbreviate finishers when they are a bit wordy. I call The Miz’s finisher “The SKF”.
But back on topic, no one is a copy cat unless every move is copied in one’s arsenal. But The Miz works with what he has and that is perfectly fine in this wrestling fan’s eyes.
Now, I am not picking on all the readers and visitors on WrestleView because I believe we have the most intellectual wrestling fans that visit. We as columnists and radio hosts get a ton of compliments for our hard work and insight. Here are some “WrestleView comments” that I thought were very good.
“The Miz was a good heel champion.” (Hey, did the fans give him heat when he posed for the title. Thought so.)
“The Miz is not a bad name.”
“The Miz should reach those goals.”
Those comments are deserved. Last Year, The Miz held onto multiple championships, helped get NXT Rookies over (yes, Bryan Danielson is not a rookie but The Miz did wonders for his character last year) in Daniel Bryan and Alex Riley, and kept himself relevant to this WWE Universe. While he may never be “the face” of the WWE he will be a name that millions will remember.
If Mike Mizanin works harder, speaks louder, and gets reactions from Pittsburgh to London to Edinburg to Bombay to any other city in the world, then The Miz will truly be “awesome”. From my standpoint, he has done great things in his tenure with the WWE…and I expect him to improve even more.
Quick Lectures
Mick Foley asked for his release this past weekend from TNA or Impact Wrestling because of creative differences. I find this as another black eye to the Impact product, as when he returned to Impact it really made me interested in this “Network” storyline and how it can actually improve the company. Now once again Impact Wrestling sweeps the rug from their fans again. Remember, I want TNA to succeed. I want something other than the WWE to watch and have positive reactions. I don’t like to be fooled as well. Let’s hope that soon Impact Wrestling can turn this ship around.
Chris Jericho signed a deal with Penguin Publishing to work on a third book. I read his first two books and they are very enlightening. I have high expectations on the third one. Based on his knowledge and a growing fanbase, I am sure this will be a hit.
Brock Lesnar last week had 12 inches of intestines removed from his body. I wish him a speedy recovery because even though we have feet upon feet of intestines in our bodies, losing a foot of it is a huge deal. Instead of making jokes at Lesnar about his health, maybe we can just hope that he can get back into the UFC very soon.
Kharma is in fact pregnant and will be out of WWE action for nine months (probably more). In her promo on Raw, she accomplished two dreams in one year. And after all that went wrong in TNA in 2010, the story of Kia Stevens’ life went full circle in 2011. I hope all goes well in her journey to motherhood, and credit the WWE for keep the baby out of danger.
Last Week, I got an e-mail from James Goodin about the great act that Shawn Michaels did for the victims of the tragic tornado that struck much of Joplin, Missouri. I personally want to say that my thoughts and prayers are still with the victims (as well as Mr. Goodin’s friends) in Joplin and am very thankful that Mr. Goodin did not feel the wrath of the storm.
For Shawn Michaels to travel to Joplin and send supplies and help the displaced population is a truly wonderful act. Michaels’ heart was in the right place and he did more for those people than what 99.9% of this country would do. Kudos to “The Heartbreak Kid” for being showing that “actions speak louder than words”.
Finally, for the past few weeks I was trying to help James Lacerenza, a reader of mine, get a $25,000 grant from Pepsi to help children with muscular dystrophy go to a summer camp at no expense to the parents and/or caregivers. Well, after a month sadly he finished 30th (he needed to be in the Top 15). However, sometime soon he will be going for the grant again and I learned that he can earn extra votes if one buys Pepsi products. I know some of my readers buy a 20 ounce bottle, or buy a cube of Pepsi and so forth. Well, I ask you to save the caps, clip out the codes, and when I ask for votes for Mr. Lacerenza we can get him over the hump and into the top 15 so he can earn this grant. And if you can’t (or don’t drink) the products I will keep promoting the cause.

What’s in a name? Apparently nothing. No matter how many times TNA/Impact/whatever tries to repackage itself to the casual fan it always ends up being pretty much the same show, with almost a half-hour of backstage and in-ring segments between actual matches. They can get their roster and fans to shout “Wrestling Matters” until they’re all blue in the face, but it’s painfully obvious to anyone who watches the show that the format has barely changed, if at all, and their new tag line is nothing but empty hype. My question is, realistically how many times can this company hit the reset button on itself before it finally breaks off in their hands? Thanks, V.
That is a very good question, Wade. There is no one way to answer the question because it truly is based on money. TNA or Impact Wrestling has repackaged their programming so many times I think because they still have deep pockets. They can bring in pretty much anyone they want, regardless of track record, age, or previous employers.
While some think that this “Wrestling Matters” tagline is empty hype, I am still waiting a few more weeks. There are some stories that I actually am enjoying with this company. However, they promise wrestling and yet it is still pretty much TNA Impact. Recently, I think TNA hit the “reset” button way too many times since I started out as a columnist on WrestleView.
They bought into Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff. They turned AJ and made him the TNA World Champion and then later awarded it to Rob Van Dam, Jeff Hardy, Mr. Anderson, and Sting. They went more of the heavyweight route and showed probably less emphasis on the X Division and Tag Team Wrestling. They were Immortal, then hit the reset button when Jeff Hardy decided to be unprofessional. They had to turn Fortune, only for that to fizzle at this time (but give credit to Bully Ray vs. AJ Styles). Oh yeah, and they tried to bring “Hardcore” back to what was critically bad, yet successful (don’t know the numbers, but Hardcore Justice was the most purchased PPV in 2010).
So, to answer this question is very controversial. I think as long as Panda Energy and Dixie Carter own Impact (or TNA) Wrestling, they are going to push that Reset Button as many times as I did playing Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo back in 1989 (which is a lot). As long as they have money and a television deal, they are going to find a way to be successful. However, in my opinion it starts with the creative staff in which I found subpar for months.

Detentions
The elimination of the “Food Pyramid” – Apparently, now we are to follow a “Food Plate” in the United States now. The reason for the detention is simply one of my projects in college was that of the Food Pyramid. Now, it is obsolete.
Snooki – For losing your driver’s license in Italy. That deserves a Nelson.
Impact Wrestling – Very soon, I hope that Wrestling does Matter. What I saw recently was more bad than good.
NXT – The NXT Tag Team Challenge? Yeah, never do that again. What a terrible idea. Replacing William Regal with Michael Cole was not smart either.
Michael Cole – Do I need a reason anymore?
JTG – He gets one for thinking that he is the best WWE Pro. So much that he said that pretty much every other word.
The Time Out Chair – Bubba the Love Sponge. He needs a time out because he continues to be insensitive to others. I know it probably gave him a slight increase in his ratings, but I would not know since I don’t listen to his show.
Eh, let’s rundown the Eternal Detentions so next week all I have to do is copy and paste it.

As previously announced on Mr. V #120, this is a new feature to the column after given the blessing by Editor-In-Chief Adam Martin. This is not a direct insult to anyone, but more of a “warning” to those who post ridiculous, uneducated, and puzzling comments under articles, columns, or recaps on WrestleView.com. I have a team of scouts who will be looking around to see who truly earns a “Brody” as the dumbest comment poster of the week.
To find out why I called this portion of the column the Brody, once again check out Mr. V #120. No, it was not because of Zack Ryder (this portions is “Brody” not “BROdy”).
After a few weeks of doing this little project for my column, I think that some people seriously try to make this column for the wrong reasons. I understand the right to free speech (as I teach that material to the real students), but I will condemn free speech that is, quite frankly, incompetent and lack of intelligence.
With that typed, many deserved to “win” this dubious award. After much thought (and a record amount of nominations), the worst comment on WrestleView went to…Phoenix Sun Dance Smith!
The “Brody” worthy comment was this:
“@Don lol couldn’t agree more, This guy is so annoying, shouting ‘I’m Awesome doesn’t make you awesome- Miz is boring in the ring, he is also a $**t wrestler, he hasn’t the charisma, skills or heat to be bigger than those names he mentioned, what a clown- and when he turns face he’s gonna be even more annoying.”
Some people should just watch other television shows, huh? Don’t like the WWE. Turn it off and read a book!

How did it end? Just when Rhodes thought he could finish off Bryan, Bryan revered the “Cross Rhodes” and applied the LaBelle Lock. Rhodes tapped out immediately.

How did it end? Even though it was no-selling at times, both worked a good main event program. The match ended Angle avoided the Five-Star Frog Splash and finished Van Dam with The Angle Slam for the pinfall victory.

The Miz – Despite all the hate, The Miz still entertains and has people buzzing him everywhere he goes. He is truly awesome.

Homework Assignment Review from last month
Last month, I asked all my readers the following question:
The WWE has changed things up. With 30 (make it 28 since Cena was drafted twice) WWE Superstars switching brands it make me think of a two-part question.
Say you are in control of the WWE Roster. If you can draft five to seven professional wrestlers outside of the WWE (TNA, ROH, Chikara, etc.), who would they be? Also, you do not want to overload your brand. Who would you release?
Well, I got a few assignments turned in. Here are the “students” who earned the Gold Star for completing the assignment. I already gave my hires and fires on a previous “Teacher’s Lounge” so I decided to spare the reader some extra reading.

1) Jay Lethal – I would put him on Smackdown going after the Intercontinental championship. He could have some great matches with Cody Rhodes, Sin Cara or Christian. If he ended up on Raw, i would tag him up w/ R-Truth.
2) Robert Roode – He would make a great addition to the WWE on Smackdown. He could feud with Ted DiBiase Jr. or Randy Orton. He would give them the technical presence and rule breaking extraordinaire that they need.
3&4) The Kings of Wrestling – This is a very good tag team and they alone would give the tag team scene a must need shot into the gut.
5) Roderick Strong – He would make a great addition going after Daniel Bryan on Smackdown. He has dominated in ROH for awhile now.

I think they are some of the most entertaining and athletic wrestlers out there who can wrestle both singles and doubles, and still put on a great performance.
#3- Cheerleader Melissa
I think it’s only fair to add a female into here. Although her tryout match back in 06 didn’t get her a job, she has still done well in JAPW and AAA.
#4- Tyson Dux
An amazing older talent who can get people over but doesn’t have really a great gimmick (cookie cutter wrestler). He can train the newer talent and does have a presence on the mic.
#5- Claudio Castagnoli
He already has 10 years of experience in the ring, and has been wrestling in major American promotions for 7 of them. Having won many championships with Austin Ares and Chris Hero, I think he’s still got a lot of potential. Being older will be a downfall, so I don’t see him being more than a mid-carder ala Mark Henry
#6- Ace High Cameron Skyy
A Michigan born talent who runs through all of the Detroit shows. Young, colorful, and can both work a microphone and work a ring, with a little more training could be a top contender easily.
#7- Truth Martini
He would make a great manager, easily teaming up with Ace High Cameron Skyy.
This means I will have to take out 7 talents from Raw (The show I watch the most)
