Owen Hart Cup Qualifying Match
“The Charismatic Enigma” Jeff Hardy w/Matt Hardy vs. Bobby Fish w/Kyle O’Reilly
This is the first time these two have ever met in the ring. Jeffrey Nero Hardy catches Fish with a series of elbow strikes to the arm and then runs him over and connecting with a Japanese Arm Drag for a quick one-count. Hardy hits a series of shoulder blocks in the corner but Fish manages to slam Hardy into the turnbuckles before connecting with a series of body strikes. He attacks Jeff’s knee with a Dragonscrew Legwhip followed by a Sliding Lariat for two.
Fish goes for a Slingshot Somersault Senton but Hardy rolls to the floor. Fish follows Jeff out and then Dragonscrews Jeff’s knee sending him flying into the barricade. Fish gets in Matt Hardy’s face and then we see Sting and Darby Allin watching on from the rafters.
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
Jeff attempts a Jawbreaker but Fish counters with a Leaping Knee Strike. Hardy ducks a clothesline and connects with a Jawbreaker this time. Fish comes back with a Roundhouse Kick but misses a second and walks into a series of elbows and clotheslines from Jeff. Jeff hits an Atomic Drop followed by the Leg Drop to the balls and a Basement Dropkick and Elbow Drop.
Jeff hits a Twist of Hate but when he goes for the Swanton, Fish crotches him on the top rope. Fish hits the Super Falcon Arrow but Jeff kicks out at two only for Fish to lock on a Heel Hook! Jeff manages to grab the bottom rope to break the hold. Jeff elbows a charging Fish and then goes to the top and hits the Whisper in the Wind. Jeff hits the Swanton Bomb for the pin.
Winner: Hardy via pinfall (Swanton Bomb)
(JOSH’S 2 CENTS: Jeff just looks a step slow compared to what he used to be. I think he and Matt still have a ton to offer AEW as a team but put in singles matches like this is going to expose some of the new limitations they both have. Fish was excellent, though. **)
The Young Bucks walk out and stare the Hardyz down before checking on Fish.
William Regal’s incredible promo that AEW posted on Twitter this morning is shown. It’s centered around scars but honestly you need to watch it yourself.
Trios Match
The Blackpool Combat Club w/William Regal vs. The AFO (The Butcher, The Blade & Angelico)
The heels jump BCC as Moxley was making his entrance. This is Angelico’s first appearance on Dynamite since last September before he was injured. Angelico puts Danielson in a wild submission hold but is quickly rolled up by Dragon for two. Danielson goes to work on Angelico with chops and kicks before tagging Yuta into the match. Yuta hits a series of arm drags on Blade as he tags in.
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
Yuta escapes through Butcher’s legs as he stops Yuta from tagging out and then Yuta hits a German Suplex! Moxley and Blade tag in and Moxley is a house en fuego. He clotheslines Blade to the floor and throws him over the time keeper’s table and then into the ring steps. Moxley tosses Blade in the ring and then a Diamond Cutter! Butcher tries to interfere but Moxley bites him. Moxley charges at Angelico but he moves and Moxley hits the ring post.
Angelico tags in and flips over Moxley before eating a Lariat. Danielson tags and hits a Missile Dropkick to Angelico and starts stomping on Angelico’s face, while Moxley and Yuta hit elbows on Butcher and Blade at the same time. Danielson puts Angelico in a Triangle and he taps.
Winners: Danielson via submission (Triangle Choke)
(JOSH’S 2 CENTS: This was little more than a squash but yet another dominant win for BCC as a trios. I definitely want to see Angelico and Danielson one-on-one, though. *1/2)
Jurassic Express approaches Team Taz backstage and accepts their challenge. Jungle Boy suggests Starks give him a shot at the FTW Title first, though. Christian taunts Starks for never defending it and Starks accepts.
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
Backstage, Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee say they are coming for revenge on Team Taz.
After Wardlow is accompanied to the ring by security, MJF walks out and trashes Maryland. MJF introduces Wardlow’s opponent, William Morrisey, the former Big Cass.
“Mr. Mayhem” Wardlow vs. William Morrisey (IMPACT Wrestling)
Morrisey has been in IMPACT since last year and is a former WWE star. Wardlow and Morrissey take turns showing off their power early on and Morrissey gets the better of Wardlow taking him down with some clubbing blows to the back and a knee to the gut. Morrissey whips Wardlow into the corner and hits a Splash but when he goes for a second one, Wardlow explodes with a Shoulder Block in the corner. Wardlow charges but Morrissey leapfrogs him and hits a Big Boot.
Morrissey clotheslines Wardlow over the top and goes after him there throwing him into the ring post. Some fans started chanting “we want Enzo,” which gets a “no we don’t” response. Morrissey slams Wardlow into the apron repeatedly and then, back in the ring, hits a Black Hole Slam for two. Morrissey lifts Wardlow up to the top rope and climbs up with him but Wardlow elbows him off and then hits an insane Moonsault landing on his damn feet! Wardlow hits the Powerbomb on Morrissey for the pin.
Winner: Wardlow via pinfall (Powerbomb)
After the match, Wardlow starts running through security guards like Taco Bell through a pot head at 2 a.m.! Wardlow Powerbombs one of the security guards on top of the rest out of the ring! Wardlow says it doesn’t matter who MJF puts in front of him, he won’t stop coming until MJF releases him from his contract.
MJF says if Wardlow beats him in a match, he will release him from his contract on a few conditions. MJF says he will name those conditions during a contract signing next week in Long Island.
(JOSH’S 2 CENTS: The booking of the match was absolutely bizarre. Morrissey completely dominated Wardlow, I meant Wardlow barely got ANY offense in, until Wardlow broke out the Moonsault out of nowhere. It really made no sense, especially considering Morrissey is an IMPACT guy. The post-match stuff was awesome, though. The fans lost their minds for Wardlow chucking around security guards like they were children. The match will have incredible heat. *)
In the back, Schiavone interviews Toni Storm, Ruby Soho, Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter. They’ll face off in a tag team match on Rampage. Baker mocks Storm and Soho and says that AEW’s history book has Baker all over it and they’ll do it again when the women open Rampage for the first time this week. Ruby says Britt has a receipt coming and they’ll humble them both on Rampage. They get in each other’s faces with Tony trying to separate them.
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
Adam Page joins Schiavone in the ring and Hangman says it would be real easy for him to come out and say how much he loves and respects CM Punk and how much he looks forward to standing across the ring from him, but Page that isn’t going to happen. Hangman says at Double or Nothing there won’t be any handshakes or a “masturbatory” Bret Hart tribute match,” he’s coming to destroy Punk.
Page points out a fan in the crowd with a Punk shirt and says when he’s done with Punk at Double or Nothing, that fan will be running to get a refund for the shirt if he hasn’t burned it yet. Page says Punk isn’t here this week because he’s off filming another TV show. Page says he is going to embarrass Punk and if Punk wants a fight, he’s got the fight of his life coming.
(JOSH’S 2 CENTS: That was a terrific promo from Page that was teetering on heel without crossing the line completely. Great stuff)
Backstage, Sonjay Dutt and Jay Lethal bitch about AEW rolling out the red carpet for Japanese wrestlers but not for Satnam Singh or for Lethal. DDT’s Konosuke Takeshita will make his AEW TV debut on Rampage and Lethal challenges him to a match.
Grudge Match
“The Wizard” Chris Jericho w/JAS vs. Santana w/Ortiz
Santana dives onto Jericho as he makes his entrance. Jericho takes the camera from a cameraman but Santana flips him off and kicks him. Santana hits a Pump Kick sending Jericho crashing into the barricade. He slams Jericho into the ring steps and then tosses him into the ring. Bernard grabs Santana’s boot to distract him allowing Jericho to hit a Springboard Dropkick knocking Santana off the apron.
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
Jericho dives off the top but eats a dropkick in midair from Santana. Santana crotches Jericho in the turnbuckles when he went for a Running Bulldog and then hits a series of clotheslines followed by the Three Amigos. Santana goes up top but Jericho cuts him off and goes for a Superplex only for Santana to headbutt him knocking him off the top. Santana hits a Frog Splash for two.
Santana goes for a DVD but Jericho rolls him up and locks in the Walls of Jericho. Santana manages to get to the ropes to break the hold, though. Santana surprises Jericho with a cradle for two and then they exchange chops and elbows. Santana goes for a Lariat but Jericho ducks and attempts a rollup only for Santana to block it and hit a Rolling Cutter for two.
Ortiz takes the bat away from Garcia on the outside and Santana hits a Spinning Lariat for another nearfall. Santana hits a Cannonball in the corner and goes for a Piledriver but Bernard gets on the apron to distract him. Jericho low blows Santana as the referee was distracted and connects with the Judas Effect for three.
Winner: Jericho via pinfall (Judas Effect)
(JOSH’S 2 CENTS: Solid match between Jericho and Santana with Santana getting a ton of offense in. ***)
After the match, JAS attacks Santana and Ortiz. Jericho hits Ortiz with the bat.
In the back, Samoa Joe says he’s coming for Jay Lethal this Friday.
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
In the back, the Gunn Club approach The Acclaimed and give them gifts. They’re scissors and they say it’s the key to their hearts and offers to team up with each other and they do the “scissoring” motion with each other on their hands. That was weird.
In the ring, the Varsity Blonds call out the House of Black. Brian Pillman Jr. says that he has been humbled because of their encounter with the House of Black and says that encounter “poisoned” Julia Hart’s mind. Pillman points to Baltimore head coach John Harbrough and talks about how he was friends with Pillman’s dad. He says that he’s lost his focus and they let House of Black come between their group. He says that they are going to fight for their family.
The lights go out and when they come back on House of Black come down to the ring. They surround the Blonds and attack, beating them down quickly. Julia Hart just watches and then Black corners her until she smiles and then stands in front of Griff Garrison. Brody King hands her a chair and she goes to hit him with it but stops. Black pulls her eye patch off and screams at her. Death Triangle hits the ring and House of Black retreats.
Jade Cargill and the Baddies brag about their success.
Owen Hart Cup Qualifying Match
Rey Fenix w/Penta & PAC vs. Dante Martin
This is Fenix’s first match in AEW since injuring his elbow. He and Hijo del Vikingo faced Young Bucks in AAA this past weekend. Fenix and Martin immediately speed things up and show off their athleticism avoiding each other’s big moves until Fenix hits a kick sending Dante to the floor. Fenix then walks the ropes and hits a Plancha onto Martin on the floor!
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
During the break, Fenix and Martin traded rollups and nearfalls. Martin countered a Gory Bomb into an Armdrag and then countered another Gory Bomb attempt into a Code Red. He hit a beautiful Spinning Headscissors and they leapfrog each other before crashing into one another. Fenix went for another leapfrog but Martin stopped and when Fenix landed, Martin hit a huge American Destroyer. Fenix rolls to the floor but Martin follows him out with a Tope Suicida!
Fenix hits a Springboard Spinning Back Kick and lifts Martin up to the top and then springs quickly up in one fluid motion into a Reverse Spanish Fly! 1…2…NO Martin kicks out! Fenix throws Martin into the ropes but Martin leaps over and kicks Fenix. Martin hits a Flying Cross Body for two. Martin hits a Reverse Suplex for two. Fenix catches Martin with a Frankensteiner for two.
Fenix goes for a kick through the ropes but Martin moves and then springs to the top but Fenix knocks him off. Fenix hits a Leaping Enziguri and then goes for a Powerbomb but tosses Martin up into the air and drops him with a Diamond Cutter for two! Fenix lifts Martin up to the top and goes for the Black Fire Driver but Maritn counters into a cradle for two.
Martin hits a Superkick and goes to the top but Fenix cuts him off. Fenix goes to the top with Martin and goes for that Reverse Spanish Fly again but this time Martin lands on his feet and Fenix does as well. Fenix looks frustrated and swings at Martin but he ducks and hits a Poison Rana! Martin goes for the Nosedive but Fenix moves and dives off the ropes only for Martin to catch him in midair. Fenix reverses Martin into the Fenix Driver for the pin!
Winner: Fenix via pinfall (Fenix Driver)
(JOSH’S 2 CENTS: Holy hell, that match was wild! Half of it was just those two pulling off the most insane spots you could think of. Fenix really played up that Martin was matching him move for move, too. We need to see this again. ****)
The brackets for the men’s side of the Owen Hart Cup are revealed. Side A will feature Rey Fenix vs. Kyle O’Reilly and Samoa Joe against a “Joker” mystery participant. On Side B, Jeff Hardy faces Darby Allin and Adam Cole faces Dax Harwood. Backstage, Darby Allin and Sting say that Darby will pull out all the stops against Jeff Hardy.
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
Thunder Rosa comes out and says that she helped build the women’s division in AEW and talks about the criticisms the division receives. She says she just wants to face the best. Thunder Rosa talks about driving eight hours to see Serena Deeb wrestle because simply watching her made her better. She calls Deeb out and Deeb doesn’t waste any time. Deeb talks about their history together and says she respects Rosa because she has earned her spot. Deeb says that they can make this the best women’s division in the world but for that to happen the best women’s wrestler in the world needs to be champion and that is Deeb. Rosa holds up the belt and says that indicates she IS the best women’s wrestler in the world. Deeb says Rosa is champion but everyone knows that Deeb is on another level above Rosa. She says she is in a class all alone. She says it’s about time she holds that championship to show that. Deeb says she will make Rosa the shortest reigning champion in AEW history at Double or Nothing.
(JOSH’S 2 CENTS: There has been plenty of rightful criticism for Rosa’s title reign, AEW just simply hasn’t done much with her since she won the title, but this was excellent. Rosa’s deficiency is her promo work and Deeb can carry that. The match itself should be terrific.)
ROH World Women’s Championship
Unification Match
Mercedes Martinez (c) vs. “The Virtuosa” Deonna Purrazzo (c)
Martinez and Purrazzo work some chain spots to start things off to a stalemate until Purrazzo goes for a Fujiwara Armbar.
—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-
Martinez hit a Spear to Purrazzo off the apron. In the ring, they exchange strikes with Martinez getting the better of the exchange. She hits a Mafia Kick in the corner and then a Hesitation Dropkick for two. Martinez goes for a whip but Purrazzo counters and takes her down with a Russian Leg Sweep. She hits a Pump Kick and a Standing Moonsault for two. Purrazzo goes for a Piledriver but Martinez rolls her up and hits a Flying Knee. Martinez hits a Fisherman Buster for two.
Martinez goes for a clothesline but Purrazzo counters with a modified DDT for two. Purrazzo goes for the Armbar but Martinez rolls her up for two. They both get up and hit clotheslines at the same time. Martinez hits a Death Valley Driver and then Curb Stomps her! Martinez puts Purrazzo in a Mexican Surfboard and locks in the Dragon Sleeper and Purrazzo taps.
Winner & UNDISPUTED ROH Women’s Champ: Martinez via submission (Dragon Surfboard)
(JOSH’S 2 CENTS: The match wasn’t bad, in fact it was solid, but there was literally no heat at all. There had been zero build on TV and Purrazzo – as awesome as she is – had not been on AEW TV. The fans were dead for the majority of it. They’ve got to do a better job at building to these ROH showcases if they are going to keep doing them on AEW TV. ***)
