From the Desk of Mr. V #111
March 3, 2011
By: Anthony J. Valvo of Wrestleview.com
Introduction
Welcome to the latest edition of “From the Desk of Mr. V”. I am Anthony “Mr. V” Valvo, your WrestleView resident teacher with the same material as last time, but different names, matches, and articles.
So sit back and grab some coffee, cider, or bottle water. Relax as you read the 111th Installment of “From the Desk of Mr. V”.
Quote of the Week
“As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold.” – Author Unknown
Wow, a quote that just sums up my days so far as a teacher/pro wrestling columnist. There are times in which I will grab a cup of delicious coffee right out of the Keurig Coffee Machine and then I get so enthralled with my writing that the first sip I get was cold. Now it is not anyone’s fault but my own.
I guess what I can tell the reader is this. Don’t get too busy to enjoy the finest things in life. Got a book report (under 18 crowd), an observation (college), or just everyday life (adults), just have a moment where you can sit back and enjoy a moment. It will make one’s mind completely at ease. So no matter how busy one can be, just make sure to sit back and relax with a cup of coffee.
Teacher’s Lecture
Note: I usually complete the column every Wednesday for WrestleView. I know events from TNA’s Impact will be discussed. However, I will not spoil it for my readers and lecture about it next week.
1) ROH 9th Anniversary ended, and here are my Q&A’s
Ok, so last weekend I paid fifteen bucks (about 3 Quad Steak Burritos at Taco Bell) to purchase the latest iPPV by Ring of Honor Wrestling, which was their 9th Anniversary show. I had a couple ask me my thoughts, and I replied “listen to the post-show on WrestleView”. So I won’t get into too much detail, but I think I should share my thoughts with the general public because you were loyal in reading my ROH Recaps for over a year. I pride myself in being as unbiased as I can (learned through experience), so I wrote down some questions for each match and answered them after watching the show.
Now before I go on, I will address those that don’t have another opinion other than those of one’s own. If you don’t like what I am typing out, please don’t read it. It will make our lives easier, right?
Anyways, let’s start by providing the readers with the results (my official “Mr. V Grade” in parentheses).
Davey Richards defeated Colt Cabana via Submission. (B-)
Mike Bennett (w/Bob Evans) defeated Steve Corino, Kyle O’Reilly, and Grizzly Redwood. Bennett pinned Corino. (C)
El Generico defeated Michael Elgin (w/Truth Martini) via pinfall. (C)
Roderick Strong defeated Homicide via pinfall to retain the ROH World Championship. (D+)
Sara Del Rey (w/Shane Hagadorn) defeated MsChif. (C+)
The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli) defeated The All Night Express (Kenny King and Rhett Titus) to retain the ROH World Tag Team Championships. (B+)
Christopher Daniels and Eddie Edwards ended in a 30-minute Time Limit Draw for the ROH Television Championship. Daniels and Edwards had one fall each in a 2-out-of-3 fall contest. As a result, Daniels retained the ROH Television Championship. (B)
Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas) defeated The Briscoes (Mark and Jay Briscoe). Benjamin and Haas now earned a Tag Team Title shot for the next iPPV in Atlanta. (B+)
For the sake of time, I will provide The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of this show and provide my overall grade.
The Good
Tag Team Wrestling – I feel that tag team wrestling is a total art form and is important on any card. I am not going on the clichéd “it has run its course” because I feel that tag team wrestling is very important to a company in Ring of Honor. And even though the card was a bit subpar for ROH standards I thought both tag team matches on the card was done very well. Both tag team matches told a very good story in the ring, as all teams had something to prove. What do I mean, you ask? Well, here it is.
The All-Night Express’ story was to prove to the Kings of Wrestling that they belong in this upper echelon of tag teams for Ring of Honor. I thought Titus and King performed at their highest level to make me believe at one point that they would win the championship.
The Kings of Wrestling played the role of the arrogant champions who did not take this talent seriously. For most of the match, they were on defense. I credit Castagnoli and Hero for playing the part well. They looked in a way shocked of how well their opponents were, and at the end they showed why they were the champions.
Haas and Benjamin were on a quest to be the ROH World Tag Team Champions, and I think they put on an amazing match with The Briscoes to earn that opportunity. Both have strong credentials from their performance in the WWE, but ROH is a different ballgame. I thought from start to finish they reminded me of their days with “Team Angle”.
Despite the loss, The Briscoes are still “the bar” when it comes to tag team wrestling in ROH. They were in the company from the very beginning and no matter where they are at on a wrestling card they always presented a main-event level match when they combine their talents.
The All Night Express – This was a breakout opportunity for Rhett Titus and Kenny King. I thought this was booked as a total underdog going up against a dynasty. Many thought that Titus and King were just going to be thrown around like rags, but I will honestly say that both performed at their highest level since becoming a tag team. Kenny King really stood out with some very good spots (including a Shooting Star Press that I thought was very impressive). After a match like that, it is safe to say that the All Night Express are a threat to the titles. I considered this match a “victory” for them because they exceeded many expectations.
Cabana vs. Richards – I was very curious to see how this match would play out given their wrestling styles. In the end, I thought the match was well done and near perfect for a moderate-length match.
The Bad
ROH World Title Match – I have to call a spade a spade at times, and the way this match was booked was horrendous. In my opinion, it was the worse match on the card because it just did not tell a good story. It felt rushed in the card, and I would have hoped for some more buildup for Homicide. This was not a good match for Strong either, as I thought he was a bit lost in the “Street Fight” element (at least last Saturday).
Production – In New York and even Charlotte (Big Bang 2010), the video stream was as clear as it could be. Sure, there were some spots where the shot stopped streaming but the quality of the show was good. Now I don’t know too much about the venue at Chicago Ridge, but the picture was not good and the announce team did not have the necessary equipment to present the story of what was going on. I think Adam Martin (my chief) said it best on the post-show. Though the card as a whole was not terrible, the production was probably the worst among the four iPPVs I have watched.
The Ugly
The ending of the Television Title Match – I don’t know if it was scripted, but Christopher Daniels looked hurt after the Hurricanranna by Eddie Edwards with about a minute left in their time limit. It actually reminded me of the time Daniels landed on his head at Bound for Glory 2009 (as Suicide) during that Ultimate X Match. It was a decent match, don’t get me wrong, but things needed to be done more carefully to prevent a bad bump like that.
Overall, the grade I gave ROH’s 9th Anniversary Show was a B-. I leaned toward a B, but I gave it a lower “B” because of the predictability of the card. I did not expect titles to change hands, but I give credit to them for putting on a solid effort. Also, the production in Chicago was not strong.
The first half of the show was bad (with the exception of Cabana vs. Richards). However, the second half really saved this show thanks to two strong tag team matches, a solid TV Title match (but a disappointing and unfortunate end), and I though Sara Del Rey vs. MsChif was done very well for the time allotted. Please do not get me wrong, but out of the four iPPVs I have purchased from ROH (Big Bang, Glory by Honor IX, and Final Battle 2010) this was, and I hate to say it, the worst of the bunch.
2) WWE NXT Season Four has concluded
I really don’t have much to type about this topic, but the winner of this season was Johnny Curtis.
Actually, I predicted that Curtis would win Season four. Sure, I had my doubts but I am glad that he will get an opportunity to showcase his talent in the WWE. When I watched him perform in FCW (through YouTube clips and such), I was really impressed with his basic style of wrestling. He might be dull in the ring, but he was the best athlete of Season four and I am glad the “WWE Universe” chose him over Brodus Clay.
Now Curtis and his pro, R-Truth, earned a Tag Team Championship match at a later date. I would say don’t expect them to win the titles, but Curtis should be someone that the WWE should take a look at.
Where do I see Curtis in the WWE? How will he be “used” in the company? Well, I think Curtis has the potential to be in the mid-card and be effective at that level. Currently, he is nowhere near the main level the way Wade Barrett was. However, I watched Curtis play both a face and a heel and he is not bad. Curtis is deceivably quick in the ring and if he develops his character he could surprise those that followed him on NXT.
As for the other competitors…
Jacob Novak – Novak was way too inconsistent and did not have a character that one could follow. Honestly, if he is not part of a faction in the WWE roster I see him as a career FCW wrestler.
Conor O’Brian – I actually thought he was one of the better wrestlers. However, I don’t know why but he was eliminated early. I liked that he had this “rat” gimmick, and I would not be surprised if I see him again. I can’t see him in FCW all year.
Byron Saxton – I think he is kind of new to the wrestling action, but he does have a decent arrogant character in him. Also, if wrestling is not in the cards he can easily transition to one of those “backstage interviewers/commentator” guys. He was pretty good as a commentator for ECW in the final months of that brand. Saxton has staying power, regardless if he is back in FCW or on the main roster as a wrestler or commentator.
Derrick Bateman – Out of all the NXT Rookies from Season Four, I think he was the one most wrestling fans could pull for. He was goofy, but he showed each week that he wanted to be in the WWE and improved consistently. Also, he had a good program going with Daniel Bryan and I would not be surprised to see “Team DB” back before 2011 ends.
Brodus Clay – The guy is a beast, hands down. I was shocked to read that he was released a couple years ago from his developmental contract. I may be wrong, but he was big on power and was surprisingly technical. Guys his size and talent are rare to find in the WWE, so it would honestly be wise to keep an eye on him. Actually, right now placing Clay in “The New Nexus” to be CM Punk’s bodyguard would be a perfect fit.
So, that ends the thoughts on NXT Season 4. They will be having a Season 5, but nothing has been announced yet.
3) Chris Jericho is “going dancing”
In case you are living under a rock, it was announced this week that Chris Jericho will compete in the United States version of “Dancing with the Stars”.
Jericho is labeled “Wrestling’s Superman”. Now truly we all know that Jericho is “The Best in the World at what he does”. Based on the talent that he will be competing with, I have no doubt that Jericho will perform better than many in this competition. What I am saying is that Jericho will represent the wrestling community with grace and passion.
Besides, if Judge Len Goodman gives him a bad score on the “Viennese Waltz” I would love to see Jericho cut off the host and cut one of his epic promos while sitting down on a chair.
Honestly, that would equal ratings.
Now, I will share with the class one of my guilty pleasures. Are you ready?
(deep breath)
I am a fan of Dancing with the Stars. It is probably the only reality TV show that I will watch because it takes a lot of time and talent to compete in ballroom dancing. “Dancing” is a lot better than garbage like “Jersey Shore”, “The Bachelor”, or any other flavor-of-the-week reality television shows.
Seriously, Chris Jericho has some really good competition (The Karate Kid, a Pittsburgh Steeler Reciever, a Disney actress, and the usual has-beens). He is one of eleven participants and some of them have solid backgrounds in acting and athletics. However, Jericho’s dance partner is one who turned some of the worst dancers into one of the best ones of their respectable seasons. If you are a regular and DVR the show, you know that Jericho is paired with 2-Time Mirror Ball Champion Cheryl Burke. If you don’t know her, click here. Burke will make Jericho a champion in the ballroom.
Looking at the competition, I think we will see Chris Jericho last a good bit. However, that is pending support from his “Jericho-holics”. So I will request that all of you go and vote for Jericho after each episode ends. Jericho is a successful author, musician, wrestling, and game show host. Ok, maybe the game show was not great but he gave it a solid effort.
Now some or none of you are asking me “Where will Jericho finish in Dancing”. Well, remember when Stacey Keibler competed and wowed the crowd? I think Jericho will be in that category. My gut is telling me that the most well-known celebrity will win the competition, so I say that out of the eleven in this competition Jericho goes 4th place in the competition and the winner will be Chelsea Kane (Disney Channel Actress) over Sugar Ray Leonard (boxer) in the finals.
4) And now something completely different! (A DVD review by a loyal reader)
I received an e-mail from Ken Konarzewski the other day asking if he wanted to help me with a column of “From the Desk of Mr. V”. I said sure and what Konarzewski presented was a DVD review for The Big Show. Please read what I thought was a fair review.
WWE: The Big Show: A Giant’s World (By: Ken Konarzewski, Jr.)
The WWE has always done a great job with documentaries, and opening up the public’s eyes to pro wrestlers. As of late you have some good ones including Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels, and you can add The Big Show’s to it. This documentary was well put together and really tied together the story of Paul Wight’s life. Starting from when he was young, to his tumor that he had at age 9, his basketball career at Wichita State, WCW, WWE, ECW, and back to the WWE.
One of the big storylines that they touched on was the death of Paul Wight’s father and his feud with The Big Boss Man. During that time I was a big wrestling fan and didn’t really pay attention to the internet, so I had thought this storyline was real, and that the WWE really played with the recent death of Paul Wight’s father. Again, I was a wrestling fan, and although wrestling was fake, that’s the kind of stuff you never really know is fake (meaning the death of Paul Wight’s father, not him jumping onto his dad’s casket or Bossman pulling the casket away at a real funeral).
The one complaint I have with the DVD is that I like it when the documentary is intertwined with the wrestling matches. Think back to the New and Improved DX DVD where you would tell a story from a certain point, and include all the matches that meant something. The Big Show’s documentary was well put together, but it was missing these major matches that as a fan of only the WWF/WWE growing up, I had missed.
In the end it told a great story about an athlete who had gone through tough times, but always seemed blessed with what he had. He always did what he felt he was passionate for, and worked hard to be where he was today. You’ll learn in the DVD how in WCW he was trained and just shown the spotlight, but in WWE that he would get verbally assaulted by other wrestlers like The Undertaker and Stone Cold, and even got sent down to OVW to get a reality check.
I give this DVD an 8 out of 10, because I feel missing those major matches really hurt the quality, even though the documentary seemed flawless.
Thank you very much for the review, Mr. Konarzewski. Please pick up a Gold Star as your read along.
Any Questions?
I will return to answer questions at a later date. The reason is now I have a full schedule in the real world of my life. As a teacher by day, I have been getting a lot more work now that I have in the previous years. So I will answer some questions later. Maybe before WrestleMania Week. I apologize.
Detentions
Detentions are few and far this week. However, I think we can all agree on some of these detentions.
To “The Zack Pack”, you hero did not do anything to merit a detention this week.
The “fans” who think Jericho competing on Dancing with the Stars is a bad idea – Shame on all of you. He may actually surprise (or make us laugh). Just suck it up and vote for Jericho!
The Rock – He said he will never leave, yet last Monday he came back….to the Titan-Tron. He will only serve one week because he really did go back..home.
Ottawa Senators – What happened to this hockey team?
ROH – Pains me to place them here, but that production in Chicago really needs to improve (maybe I should place gofightlive.tv in there).
Justin Gabriel – He almost forgot to protect himself on a chair shot on Smackdown.
Orlando Jordan – I completely forgot that he was still on the TNA roster. Now that he is still there, what the heck was he doing on Impact last week?
Charlie Sheen – Yes, you got fame, fortune, and such. However, such behavior in the world should not be accepted. In words of Hunter Golden “If you are watching it, you are condoning it”. #tigerblood.
James Franco – You were terrible as an Oscars host.
People who are bidding thousands of dollars for “hair” – Beiber’s hair is going to a lucky fan for $15,000. On behalf of everyone on WrestleView, we say “get a life”.
The Time Out Chair – Karen and Jeff Jarrett
This had to be done. It has gone from humorous to downright annoying. The segments leading up to the upcoming “wedding” (and #douginatux) were just uneventful. I just think the whole thing is ridiculous that in a way they are promoting this better than say the big storyline (Fortune vs. Immortal).

Grade: B.
High Honors – Daniel Bryan vs. Ted DiBiase, Jr., WWE Superstars, February 24.
How did the match end? After DiBiase executed a suplex, he was distracted when Yoshi Tatsu presented Maryse with flowers. After some slaps by Maryse, Bryan seized the moment and applied the LaBelle Lock on DiBiase. Bryan won via submission.
Grade: B.
Honors – Mr. Anderson vs. Kurt Angle vs. Rob Van Dam, TNA Impact, February 25.
How did the match end? After Angle delivered suplexes to Van Dam and Anderson, that wedding song planed and The Jarretts appeared. That distracted Angle enough for Anderson to seize the moment and connect with the Mic Check. Anderson won by pinfall over Angle.

The Latest Predictions from the Faculty Standings (as of WWE’s Elimination Chamber)
In case you read the Predictions column, we are now doing a contest with the readers of WrestleView. All you have to do to be a part of the work is to be consistent and predict each match for each PPV during the 2011-2012 WrestleView Faculty Season. The top three (and to prevent ties, I did add a tiebreaker) after the 2012 Royal Rumble will win a prize that will be determined at a future date, however after discussing this with Editor-in-Chief (and 2010 Golden Yardstick Winner) Adam Martin here is an idea what the prizes will be:
First Place will win a wrestling DVD.
Second Place will win a T-Shirt.
Third Place will win a Coffee Mug.
Last Place will win TNA’s Victory Road 2009, as it was as bad a PPV as what potentially someone’s picks will be.
First, here are the standings among the WrestleView Staff. Remember, I took out the Student of the Week standing. However, the Student of the Week will still be able to make the predictions in the next round.
Staff Standings
1) Mike Tedesco (WWE Smackdown and WWE Superstar Recaps)……….10-2 (5-0)

There will be a ton of students of the week for TNA’s Victory Road, in which I will be adding into another article because I got 14 that scored a 5-0 record.
The “students” that went 5-0 are: Paul Meade, Michael Fox, Brandon Ewing, Antonio DeGaetano, Paul Smith, Frank McMahen, VKingoftheWorldV, Nick Latham, Robert Downing, Brian Czygan, Wade Bradford, Kyle Patin, Pat Lorang, and Joe Devine.
Students Standings
Top 5 will be featured, as if the standings ended today they would be in line for the prizes (of course, it ends Royal Rumble 2012).
(W/L from Elimination Chamber is in first parentheses)
(Tiebreaker Points are in second)
1) Brandon Ewing………………………………………………10-2 (5-0) (4) – Currently 1st

We have four others at 9-3, but have three tiebreaker points. We have over 10 with an 8-4 score.
The worst record currently is 6-6, and that is shared by two students.
