I’m proud to let everyone know that NEXT WEEK we will begin a special contest to give away some Lucha Libre Masks! Myself and www.Maskmaniac.com have joined up to bring this special contest to everyone. 3 masks will be given away in the contest. Next week I will ask a Trivia Question and to enter the contest all you have to do is email me (joshboutwell@hotmail.com) the answer to the question with your name and home address as well, and “Mask Contest” as the subject header of the e-mail. I will take everyone’s name that got the question right, put them in a hat, and pick out 3 names.
– The 1st name pulled out will win a Blue Demon Jr. Youth Mask (retail $11.99) which is perfect for kids (especially Halloween):
– The 2nd name pulled out will win a blue Ultimo Dragon Adult Pro-Fit Mask (retail $16.99). These are pretty much fan support masks:
– The 3rd and final name will win a blue & red Ultimo Guerrero Pro-Lyraca Mask (retail #39.99). These masks are high quality masks (which are VERY similar to the actual masks the wrestlers wear) and are made out of a special material called “lycrapiel” that contours perfectly around your face and also features special stitching:
One of the biggest questions I get from people is “where can I get a good Lucha Mask?” and MaskManiac is easily the best place I’ve seen online. They have great quality masks at reasonable prices as well. So even if you don’t win a mask, but still won’t one I suggest checking out their masks.

CMLL Cancels Mistico Press Conference
Last week CMLL announced they would be holding a Press Conference this week to discuss the Mistico situation and many thought Mistico may actually be there, but Thursday came and went and CMLL decided to not even hold a Press Conference. Some promoters in Mexico are promoting Mistico has part of their CMLL shows in the next few weeks so the question remains whether Mistico will be wrestling some more dates to finish up with CMLL or if CMLL is going to put another wrestler under the mask, or whether those promoters are just unaware (or don’t care) of Mistico signing with the WWE.
CMLL Attendance Trends From 2010
This week the LuchaBlog (http://www.thecubsfan.com/cmll/) put together a pretty interesting chart (and description) that talks about the attendance trends from 2010. Easily the biggest draw from last year was Mistico’s rudo turn (no surprise there) as well as the Mistico vs. Psicosis feud which many claimed wasn’t a big enough draw to do the Mask vs. Mask Match. Really interesting stuff there so this is a definite read.
Another CMLL Star Tried Out for WWE?
There are rumors on the internet that Mistico wasn’t the only CMLL star that tried out for WWE last year. While no name was given Cesar from LosColiseinos Blog did tease that this person was formerly a tecnico but is now a rudo and feuded with Mistico. If you think hard enough you’ll probably figure it out, but Cesar does say too that he doesn’t know for sure and doesn’t know if CMLL knows that this person tried out. It’s unclear whether WWE wants to sign this star or not either.

Dragon Gate Creates New Match Type
This week Dragon Gate announced that they had created a new match on the heels of the new Unit War. It will be called The Defeated Revives Survival Elimination Match. It’s going to be a 4 on 4 team format and eliminations can come by pinfall, submission, and even over the top rope elimination. The catch is that when eliminated you aren’t eliminated for good, only a short period of time (not announced just how long yet) and after the time period the eliminated wrestler can return. If a team has multiple eliminations occurs before their revival period expires, they can only bring back one wrestler. There will be a 30 minute time limit and if it comes to a draw then they will use a point system. Very confusing stuff.

2/3 Falls Match
Mistico vs. Averno
CMLL-NJPW FantasticaMania Night Two (January 23, 2011)
Tokyo, Japan (Korakuen Hall)
FIRST FALL
This match will go down in history for CMLL for several different reasons. First, it was arguably the best match on their very first ever tour of Japan, but secondly (and most importantly) it will mark the final match in the CMLL career of Mistico as well as being his final match with his biggest rival: Averno. At the time of this match no one (outside of Mistico, the WWE, and CMLL) knew that Mistico was headed to Vince McMahon Land. Who would have ever thought that these two bitter rivals would end their feud in Japan of all places? Why in the hell is Averno dressed like a member of the KKK (except his robe and hood are black instead of white)? I still find it weird for a Mexican wrestler to come to the ring to German Heavy Metal. Averno and Mistico kick the match off circling each other as the fans start clapping. They lockup in the center of the ring but quickly break and then Averno attempts a tieup but Mistico quickly hits an Arm Drag to catch his rival off guard. Averno shoots in for another tieup and this time gets Mistico in a Waistlock and then takes him down with a Gutwrench Slam and then he grabs Mistico’s arm, lifts him up to his feet by his arm, spins him around, and then hits an Armdrag of his own! Now it’s time for a little test of strength in the middle of the ring. Averno gets the advantage with a leg sweep to the back of Mistico’s feet and he holds Mistico down (still holding onto the Greco-Roman Knucklelock the whole time) and gets a two count before Mistico gets his shoulder up. Averno lifts himself up into the air but before he comes down Mistico gets his feet up into Averno’s midsection. Mistico kicks Averno off and then nips up to his feet and leaps up for a Monkey Flip. Averno blocks it and Mistico flips backwards onto his feet. Averno trips Mistico ago with a Leg Sweep and then Mistico uses his legs to lock in a modified Head Scissors on Averno as Averno bent down to grab Mistico. Averno shifts his body weight so that he is on top of Mistico and gets a nearfall out of his this. Mistico bridges his body up onto his head and then spins into a Spinning Head Scissors Takeover! Beautiful move! Mistico actually holds onto the Head Scissors even after Averno hits the mat! Averno fights to his knees and then he reaches over and grabs Mistico’s arms. Mistico uses his legs again putting his feet into Averno’s midsection and then leaping to his feet, but this time Averno uses Mistico’s momentum against him by lifting Misitco up and onto his shoulders. Averno then for a Spinning Fireman’s Carry but Mistico counters into a gorgeous Spinning Headscissors takeover! Averno slides out of the ring and Mistico flies! Mistico nails Averno perfectly with a Corkscrew Plancha! Take note Jeff Hardy, THAT is Poetry In Motion. Mistico rolls Averno back into the ring and immediately runs the ropes and goes for another Spinning Head Scissors Takeover (possibly even La Mistica), but this time Averno counters with a sitout front slam. Averno immediately follows up with Devils Wings (Spinning Angels Wings)! 1…2…3! Averno wins the first fall!
SECOND FALL
We see replays of the first fall and then 2nd fall begins as Averno picks Mistico back up. Averno puts Mistico in a corner and tells him to “get ready.” Averno hits the ropes and Mistico leapfrogs him and then as Averno comes off the ropes again, Mistico rolls backwards but Averno rolls over him! Both men stand off and then Averno hits the ropes again and this time he catches Mistico with a Running Hurricanrana that sends Mistico flying out to the floor. Averno then follows up with his No Hands Tope con Giro (Somersault Plancha)! Averno and Mistico both roll back into the ring as the referee starts his 20 count on them. Mistico stops on the apron and Averno runs over to him and tries to clothesline Mistico, but Mistico blocks it and then hits a Leaping Enziguri! Mistico follows up with his gorgeous Springboard Hurricanrana where he gracefully lands on his feet! Mistico then hits the ropes and hits a beautiful Rolling Sunset Flip! 1…2…3! Mistico evens it up!
THIRD FALL
The third fall begins as the fans start clapping for both men. Mistico hits the ropes and Averno drops down underneath him and then Mistico hits a back handspring off the ropes into a backflip landing his feet. Averno sidesteps him and watches as Mistico hits the mat. Averno goes for a clothesline but Mistico ducks and then Averno goes for a Tilt-A-Whirl Backbreaker as Mistico came off the ropes. Mistico reverses it into an Armdrag! Mistico follows up with a Springboard Hurricanrana (off the middle rope this time) again landing on his feet as he finishes the move (God, this guy is amazing, everytime I see him do it looks just as awesome as the last time). Averno rolls out to the floor and Mistico follows out with a Tope Suicida through the ropes onto Averno on the floor! Mistico then kicks Averno in the head and rolls him back into the ring. Mistico plays to the crowd before climbing back into the ring. Averno tries to cut him off on the apron but Mistico shoulder blocks him through the ropes and then hits a Springboard Sunset Flip! Averno rolls through it however and gets to his feet. Mistico hits the ropes again and again hits the Rolling Sunset Flip! 1…2…NO Averno kicks out this time! Mistico hits the ropes yet again and this time hits a Hurricanrana and then hooks Averno’s legs! 1…2…NO Averno kicks out again! Mistico sidesteps a charging Averno and then he whips him into the ropes, but Averno comes back with a dropkick that sends Mistico through the ropes and back down to the floor. Averno slingshots himself over the top rope but lands on the apron and then kicks Mistico. He then follows up with an Asai Moonsault! Mistico almost gets counted out but dives into the ring at the last moment. He sells it as if he’s exhausted. Mistico rolls out to the apron and Averno tries to knock him off it, but again Mistico blocks it and hits another Leaping Enziguri! Mistico follows up with Springboard Hurricanrana attempt, but Averno blocks it and counters into a Powerbomb! He folds Mistico up like an accordion! 1…2…NO Mistico kicks out! Averno picks Mistico up and hits a Spinning Side Slam and then follows up with a Standing Moonsault! 1…2…NO and again Mistico kicks out! Averno goes for Devils Wings, but Mistico with a crazy reversal into La Mistica! Averno fights it and almost taps but finally gets to the ropes to break the hold! Mistico waits for Averno to get to his feet and then hits yet another gorgeous Running Hurricanrana that sends Averno back out to the floor again. Mistico then springs to the top rope and hits a Plancha onto Averno on the floor! The referee goes out to check on Averno before starting the 20 count. Averno rolls back into the ring and goes for a dropkick but Mistico moves out of the way and then lights Averno up with some chops in the corner. Mistico lifts Averno up and onto the top rope and then nails him with a Leaping Enziguri! Mistico runs to the opposite corner and then springs towards Averno and double springs off the middle rope and then onto the top rope, but before he can pull anything off Averno punches him in the gut. Averno then hits SUPER DEVILS WINGS! 1…2…NO MISTICO STILL KICKS OUT! Averno says it’s over as he climbs to the top rope. Averno dives off but Mistico catches him in midair with a dropkick! 1…2…NO Averno kicks out! Mistico lifts Averno up and hit’s a Scoop Slam and then he hits a gorgeous Springboard Senton Bomb! 1…2…NO Averno still kicks out! Mistico drags Averno closer to the corner and then springs to the top but his foot slips (and he almost lands on his damn head)! Averno quickly improvises as he gets to his feet and starts stomping on Mistico. Averno then hits a Running Liger Bomb! 1…2…NO Mistico kicks out! Averno argues with the referee which allows Mistico to roll him up! 1…2…NO Averno kicks out! Mistico kicks Averno in the head and then hits a Snapmare Takeover. Mistico springs to the top again and goes for a Moonsault, but Averno moves. Mistico lands on his feet and then rolls backwards, and dropkicks Averno as he gets to his feet again! Mistico goes for a La Magistral Cradle, but Averno blocks it and then hits one of his own! 1…2…NO STILL HE KICKS OUT! Averno tries to get the fans behind him but they’re clearly behind the tecncico. Averno leapfrogs Mistico as he comes off the ropes, and then Mistico goes for a Spinning Headscissors but Averno blocks it. Mistico lands on his feet and then and Averno attempts a clothesline. Mistico catches Averno’s arm with his own arm and then he spins around Averno’s body into a Spinning Headscissors right into LA MISTICA! This time Averno has to tap!
Winner: Mistico via 2 falls to 1
(Talk about having one damn good swan song for Mistico. These two have had many classic battles in the past but this was one of the better ones. Both men worked their asses off and pulled out all the stops along the way. They built to the final and breath taking third (and long) third fall with a decent length 1st fall and a short second. This ends up being the final time Mistico and Averno ever face each other then it’s a great farewell. The only thing that really sucks is that it took place in Japan rather than Arena Mexico. There was really only one blown spot with Mistico slipping on the top rope, but the rest was near perfect. ****1/2)
