Welcome to the latest edition of “From the Desk of Mr. V”. I am Anthony “Mr. V” Valvo, your WrestleView resident teacher with the same material as last time, but different names, matches, and articles.
So sit back and grab some iced coffee. Relax as you read the 87th Installment of “From the Desk of Mr. V”.
Quote of the Week
More than likely, this may be my last quote from a sports player. But when I reached my 87th column on WrestleView I can only think of one person. He is a particular athlete that currently wears the #87 in the National Hockey League.

You can tell from Crosby’s passion that he enjoys what he does. While anti-Pittsburgh Penguin fans may call him a “crybaby” or a “whiner”, I do not agree with any of that. He is a leader, a captain, and (very important) a STANLEY CUP WINNER. Alex Ovechkin can keep his individual trophies and his team that has crappy goaltending and mediocre defense.
Oh, hockey and sports fans, did you know that Sidney Crosby can do more than just score goals in hockey? (Hope these clips can be shown).
He can Canada rejoice, and the United States curse his name. (Of course after this happened, Canada went back to mostly being anti-Crosby for some reason.)
He can shoot a puck through the football uprights. Also, at the end of the clip we have a Jonathan Coachman sighting!

Teacher’s Lecture
1) A taste of Glory by Honor IX.
My Lecture: Now I did not get really much to say on the ROH Post-Show on WrestleView.com and maybe it is mostly my fault for being really tired that day, but along with Adam Martin and Dave Stephens (but he did not get to see it) I forked over the 15 bucks to watch the iPPV on gofightlive.tv. If you are a VIP member on WrestleView, please check out Adam Martin’s blog about ROH’s Glory by Honor IX. He was impressed with it, and after watching it again (not only do you pay the fifteen bucks for the live feed, but you also can watch it as many times as you want after that for FREE!!)
This was my second iPPV purchase now that I looked at my bill statements. The first was ROH’s The Big Bang and I was very impressed with the show. Sure, there were some spottiness everywhere but there were some that told a story.
The difference between Glory by Honor IX and The Big Bang was that every match told a story in New York City.
I will run down the card briefly. I know many in my classroom does not follow ROH, so after this I will find a TNA or WWE story to come up after this.
Match #1 – Kenny King def. Jay Briscoe
Thoughts: This was a real spot fest, but it told a story. One move that made me cringe was when Jay botched a move in which King landed wrong near the corner of the ring. If one wanted to see wrestling holds, one would be disappointed. It was just one move after one move and I was shocked to see that King pulled the upset because Jay in my opinion is the more gifted Briscoe. However, King needed this win more because he is part of a newly-formed tag team called the All-Night Express (w/Rhett Titus). I just did not enjoy the match, but you have to have short programs and I have to understand that.
Match #2 – Mark Briscoe def. Rhett Titus
Thoughts: This was way better than the first match. I did a bit of homework before the card and even though Titus was not moving around as quick he had a reason. According to his Facebook page, Titus had an ear infection. While some people would just call it a day, I give Titus a lot of credit if this is true. Mark actually had a good program as well and what I got out of this match was that we have a new feud involving The Briscoes and The All-Night Express.
For the All-Night Express, this is great. Kenny King and Rhett Titus have improved and flourished on HDNet and they needed a strong feud with a proven tag team in ROH. Since the Kings of Wrestling are the champs they had to go with The Briscoes for now. While this may do nothing for potential growth for The Briscoes, I like this move. Anything to help ROH grow a little more should not hurt anyone.
Match #3 – Erick Stevens and The Necro Butcher (w/Prince Nana and Ernesto Osiris) def. Grizzly Redwood and Ballz Mahoney
Thoughts: This was a good story, as Grizzly Redwood is feuding with The Embassy. Adding Mahoney to the mix was questionable, but after watching this match it was the right thing to do. Mahoney was much better in this match than in Hardcore Justice.
Redwood may not win any titles or win any matches for that matter, but he is the Spike Dudley of ROH. Redwood is labeled “The Littlest Lumberjack” and it is true. He is maybe 5’3 and 130 lbs. But Redwood can bump very well and still get up! Necro Butcher did his usual brawling tactics and I really did not see much out of him as I did Stevens. Stevens did a good job demonstrating power.
The most surprising move of the night was simple. It was Ballz Mahoney doing a Frog Splash (yes, you read it right). Even though Mahoney and Redwood fought hard it was outside interference from Prince Nana that helped his faction earn the victory. Overall, it was a very fun tag match but did not do much after that storyline wise unless Mahoney would join ROH (which I don’t think will happen).
Match #4 – El Generico and Colt Cabana def. Kevin Steen and Steve Corino in a Double Chain Match.
Thoughts: This was by far the best match on the first half of the card.
If you are new to ROH, Generico and Steen have been feuding since December 2009 after Steen turned on Generico in the worst way possible. It was beautifully done. Fast forward to the middle of September and add great mouthpieces for them in Corino (who I think helped Steen with his talking) and Cabana (because Generico does not talk) and this might actually be the feud of the year. I felt the hatred from both teams right from the start and I think within five minutes Steen, Corino, and Cabana all bled. I am not one to condone blood a whole lot, but this was different. This elevated the intensity to a whole new level.
After many moves and holds (and blatant chokes) Steen and Corino had the upper hand and Corino’s kid helped Steen get his chain off. Moments later, Cabana was tied to the corners like a sacrificial lamb……
That was when I had the same problem as everyone else who bought the live feed. I had no feed…….
Then when I saw the finish to it, I was pleased. I think if anything Generico really needed this win over his arch rival as much as anything. I loved the finish in which Colt Cabana powerbombed Corino and then applied the Billy Goat’s Curse on Corino. This was a very passionate match that was one of the best on the card.
Now what happened after the match was even better. I thought this would have ended the feud between all of them. Boy was I wrong! After the match Generico tried to hit the BRAINBUSTAHHHHHH on Steen, but Steen pulled his mask off. Generico quickly left the ring with Cabana holding a towel over his head. Steen then set up a chair, put Generico’s mask on the chair, and wrote Mr. Wrestling on the chair with Corino’s blood! Before the match, Steen mentioned that at the end of the match Generico’s image will be of that on his shirt. Well, Steen was kind of right and his goal was reached. However, this added another twist to this feud and it look like it will go on for another few months. I won’t complain with this feud. This has gone one very well.
During their Intermission, in a taped segment Davey Richards decided to stay around in Ring of Honor. I will get to that at a later column.
Match #5 – Eddie Edwards def. Shawn Daivari (w/Prince Nana and maybe Ernesto Osiris) to retain his ROH Television Championship
Thoughts: This was a pretty quick, aggressive contest. Daivari worked on Edwards’ shoulder for a good bit, but Edwards came strong and some of the move he landed on his “injured shoulder”. I was a bit confused, but the finish was pretty quick so there is not much to type about this. I think that Prince Nana wants Erick Stevens to go after Edwards’ ROH TV Title based on an Internet post (in Nana’s character, not real of course). I just thought in title matches they should have a longer program, but that is just me. Both wrestlers did their job and went out.
Match #6 – Christopher Daniels def. Austin Aries
Thoughts: The story started early when Aries poked fun at Daniels calling him “CD” (which he poked fun at CDs being obsolete). They exchanged many moves and holds, demonstrated great quickness, and the crowd was hot the entire time! I particularly was laughing when I heard the F**K TNA chant. Daniels was very quick on his feet and made the more difficulty attacks very simple. Aries was the perfect opponent for Daniels. Aries not only generated a reaction with his mic time, but he was equally good in the ring as well.
What made this different from many ROH matches was that they really slowed the pace down, and the crowd ate it up. Though near the end it was a bit spotty I enjoyed watching the Super Angel’s Wings Daniels did to finish the contest. In a match that was highlighted by The Dream Tag Match (which was next), Black vs. Strong, and The Double Chain Match, this match would easily get lost. I wanted to type out that this was probably one of the best matches I have seen from both of them in a long time. It’s great to see Daniels get a match that is longer than three minutes. Also, both told a very good story in that ring and that was a huge plus.
Match #7 – The Kings of Wrestling (Claudio Castagnoli and Chris Hero w/Shane Hagadorn) def. Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin)
Thoughts: I just want to go and say that I was pleased to see the crowd cheering heavily for Haas and Benjamin. These two guys would fit in well with the ROH Roster. If money would not be an issue, I think both would do great things for ROH. The Kings also got a good reaction from the crowd, even though they are the heels.
Haas was mainly the technician in the ring between him and Benjamin. Though we have not seen Haas in some time, he was pretty quick in his holds and suplexes. However, Benjamin was so gifted in that ring. It was great to see Benjamin back in the ring to show off his freakish athleticism. He pretty much sold a ton of offense from The Kings. Benjamin’s Double Neckbreaker on The Kings to give Haas the hot tag was superb. Benjamin even did the “leap to corner and do the Superplex”. For not being in the public eye for the past few months, both Haas and Benjamin showed the quickness that I remembered from their runs in the WWE.
Hero and Castagnoli were the perfect team for Haas and Benjamin to go up against. They are easily the best tag team among the wrestling companies that I watch and they wrestled a near-perfect match last Saturday. Castagnoli showed his great power (his dead lift Gutwretch was something that night) and his European Uppercuts were very crisp. Chris Hero was very good, mostly with his elbow strikes. In my opinion no one hits elbow drops more effectively than Hero.
I thought the ending was as good as they could make it out to be. ROH probably wanted the Kings to go over, but did not want to ruin the match. So how did they book it? They had Hero take out Haas behind the ref’s back with the Loaded Elbow. It was perfect because after the match, Haas and Benjamin got their revenge with German Suplexes. The Kings immediately left, leaving Shane Hagadorn along in the ring. Haas and Benjamin had no problem tearing Hagadorn a new one and once that was done they held the ROH World Tag Team Belts and teased that they may go for them. I don’t expect them to be a part of the active roster. But if Haas and Benjamin do join ROH on a regular basis, I truly believe with hype and publicity the ROH Tag Team Division will blow others out of the water.
Match #8 – Roderick Strong (w/Truth Martini) def. Tyler Black in a No Disqualification Match to win Black’s ROH World Championship. Terry Funk was the Ringside Vigilante.
Thoughts: This was Black’s Swan Song. The fans hated on Black, calling him a sellout. It was tough to follow the story because both were heels. Before Black’s decision to go to the WWE, Strong was strong on Black’s heels to win the championship. However, Strong was “screwed” multiple times and turned heel. Black became champion, then slowly went to heel tactics and finally went full blown heel mode when he signed with the WWE.
Maybe it was because I was happy with the previous match on this card, but I was not a fan of this match. It was very spotty and very hard to follow. However, I did find some positive things in this main event. Strong chopped away on Black hard. Strong just threw Black everywhere around the ringside and the crowd was with him all the way. Black was eating this moment up. Black impersonated many of the WWE’s taunts and moves until the end. I laughed when Black did the “You Can’t See Me” sign and then did a sloppy STF on Strong.
What I did not like was the rushed power moves in the final 30 seconds. Black does Two Buckle Bombs and Three Superkicks. However, Strong no sold and did a fast back breaker, gutbuster, and then the Sick Kick to end this match. This was something I would have expected on HDNet, not on a Pay-per-view. But clearly, this is my opinion.
After the match, Strong was awarded the ROH World Championship (which I still think is well-deserved, but maybe a bit too soon and that was because of Black’s departure) and wanted to shake hands with Black. Black brushed him off and Black did a Double Bird Salute to the ROH crowd and left. Just when I thought it was over, the lights go out.
And before I want to go on, I want to say that Jose Marrero was dead on in a conversation we had. He mentioned Homicide returning to ROH.
Well, after that I hear a familiar ROH theme song. Then I went “HOLY S!!T HOMICIDE’S BACK!!!!” After they faced off the cameras went off the air.
So with that said, every match told a story and it was booked very well. I think this was Delirious’ first iPPV as the ROH booker and I say he did a fantastic job. The wrestlers did a good job in the ring too, though at times they were a bit rough.
Adam Martin blogged that it was “traditional wrestling”. I agree with Mr. Martin on this one and strong suggest to anyone that has an extra fifteen bucks to give ROH a chance in December. If you consider a membership to WrestleView’s VIP the coast of a Value Meal, consider an iPPV the cost of a couple pizzas at Papa John’s.
I gave the overall grade for this a “B”. I thought it was very good for my money and look forward to watching Glory by Honor IX again in due time….and I won’t be paying extra…EVER!!!
Before I go on with my lecture, I want to say thank you to Adam Martin and Dave Stephens for the Post-ROH show. It was fun to work with them on this and hope that I am back the next time they do it. Also, thanks to CJ Bowman for coming on as a guest to discuss his genuine thoughts on the show. Mr. Bowman has been a loyal reader of my column since the beginning and I do appreciate it.
2) Matt Hardy or Internet….who is telling the truth?
As many already mentioned, wrestling news sites are stating that Matt Hardy was sent home from England. Apparently, a “source” in the WWE mentioned that it is true. And why was Matt Hardy sent home? Because of his Tweets?
Then….A TWIST!!
Matt Hardy criticizes the Dirt Sheets (John Morrison and The Miz’s now defunct wwe.com show?) and said that he was in his hotel in the United Kingdom. Isn’t the UK and England the same place? I don’t know….
So, someone is lying. Yep, a big fat (no pun intended, Matt) stinking liar!
Next, we get Matt Hardy posting a video on how he is in England. I only got up to when he opened the door to his hotel room because I was afraid a woman was about to fell the curse of Matt Hardy’s Peni$
So, the sites say that Matt Hardy tried to debunk the rumors. So Matt is the liar, huh? I don’t know. Then on WrestleView it stated that Matt Hardy will miss a couple dates because of his “behavior”. I am not sure who to believe.
You know what I think Matt Hardy reminds me of? He reminds me of Milton from Office Space.
**Joke Alert**
You know, the guy that was laid off secretly, yet comes to work anyway? Well, it seems like he is talking and we don’t care. I wonder how long Matt Hardy will get the message until he realizes that he is not really with the company. Also, I wonder if Johnny Ace took Matt’s “Stapler”. Because if he did, don’t be surprised if WWE Headquarters get set on fire and Matt Hardy walks away from the crime
He talks up like he is a main event superstar, but he really is a mid-card guy to just put over the more athletic types. I mean, I think Matt Hardy has done a lot for the WWE and I believed that he wrestled much better than his younger brother. But to go and rant against a company you are employed with and getting a nice salary just makes you look like a fool. I mean, be happy you have a steady job with a rock-solid company, Matt. That is all I really want to type on this matter so I will end it right here.
Oh, Matt Hardy also reminds me of this…
Ok, one more YouTube Clip after that in due time (probably in the Gold Star Segment), but yeah if you can envision a WWE Party and wonder “Who would be the drunk girl that rants all the time?” Look no further than Matt Hardy.
Detentions
The following deserves to be in detention until further notice. I don’t think I need to make a reason but I will anyway.
The TV Show “Outsourced” on NBC – This I honestly find offensive. I know of many of my office friends (I was in order entry for a glass promotion company in Aliquippa) who lost their jobs because they were outsourced to India. And now NBC wants to make a comedy out of this???? I am sorry, but seeing people leave a building in tears so a company can save a few bucks by sending a job overseas burns me. I watched there “sneak peak” and did not laugh once. I ask all my readers to not watch this show! Instead, go play poker!
Matt Hardy – Obviously you are in here because you can’t keep your mouth shut.
Hulk Hogan – I still remember the days in which he Hulked up and destroyed many a wrestler in the 80s. Now the image of him is a poop joke.
Dallas Cowboys Offensive Line – All I can say is….(in echo) Holding….Offense…
Rex Ryan – I like the Jets, but I think he finally bit off more than he could chew.
“Dashing” Steve Parsons – For trying to beat me in Fantasy Football. I won’t say who won because I don’t want to embarrass him anymore than I should. Steve, get a laugh and maybe punch out Matt Hardy, then you are dismissed from detention.

**Reminder no TNA and ROH this past week, as they were not aired on television**
So, with TNA and ROH not having any programming I did nothing but watch WWE TV all week. Yep, six hours of my life in which some were entertaining and some I wish I had back. There was not much to write about but I did find three matches that shall be considered “Honor Roll Worthy”
Distinguished Honors – The Undertaker vs. CM Punk, Friday Night Smackdown, September 10
How it ended – After an impressive back and forth match, The Undertaker applied his Hell’s Gate submission finisher and CM Punk tapped out.
Grade: B+.
Why it was distinguished honors-worthy? This match had a very good pace that featured holds, strikes, power, and technical tactics. This match also had some great storytelling, as they had a strong opening segment that led to this and the end of the broadcast. I liked the exchanges and overall I thought both guys wrestled very well in this main event.
High Honors – John Cena vs. Justin Gabriel, Monday Night Raw, September 6
How it ended – John Cena escaped a high risk move from Justin Gabriel to hit the Attitude Adjustment finisher from the 2nd rope.
Grade: B- (near a C+).
Why it was high honors-worthy? I was impressed that they both worked on the mat the first few moments of the match. I will say this from watching him in FCW, Gabriel is more than just flips and kicks. He is not a bad wrestler at all. John Cena hit the same moves, but he made Gabriel look great in this contest because Cena sold the offense real well until he became “Superman” again. Overall, it was a nice pace and a solid flow between the face of the company and someone who can be the future.
Honors – Alberto Del Rio vs. Matt Hardy, Friday Night Smackdown, September 10
How it ended – Alberto Del Rio easily took advantage of Matt Hardy’s injuries and applied the Cross Arm Breaker submission hold. Hardy tapped out very easily.
Grade: B- (near a C+).
Why it was honors-worthy? Matt Hardy was fine, as he took his bumps and did a fine job in the ring (of course, I graded this before his rant). Alberto Del Rio was great in the ring and phenomenal with his character. Del Rio’s control was excellent in this match and I think if the WWE does push Del Rio to a program with Christian it could very well be some top matches in recent months.
