AEW President Tony Khan discusses bringing Sammy Guevara back from suspension

Tony Khan on Sammy Guevara

Last night on AEW Dynamite, Sammy Guevara returned from his suspension.

Guevara, who was suspended indefinitely last month after inappropriate comments he made about Sasha Banks on a 2016 podcast, returned during the main event segment, helping The Inner Circle defeat The Jungle Express.

During Guevara’s suspension, he reached out to Banks to apologize, publicly apologized, and entered into sensitivity training. His salary was also donated to the Women’s Center of Jacksonville.

AEW President Tony Khan spoke to Sports Illustrated about the decision to bring Guevara back:

“Sammy completed four weeks of extensive sensitivity training, and his curriculum included subject matters of tolerance, gender, race relations, and why people’s words matter. During his suspension, he was very contrite. I asked him to use that time to try and become a better person, and I think he did.

“Sammy was off television for a month and suspended without pay for 30 days, and I think it was the right time for Sammy to come back because he’s shown that he’s very sorry and that he can change. He’s spent every day over the past month trying to prove that.”

It should be noted that while Guevara was off television for a month (being suspended June 22 and returning on the July 22 episode of Dynamite), last week’s episode was taped on Thursday, July 16.
