A video kicks off the show highlighting the main event of tonight’s WrestleMania, WWF Champion Sgt. Slaughter vs. Hulk Hogan.
We go live into the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena to see a cheering crowd. Willie Nelson is introduced to sing “America the Beautiful.” The crowd gives him a great ovation at the conclusion of the song. A LOUD “USA” chant fires up.
Mike’s Thoughts: Good rendition of “America the Beautiful” from Willie Nelson. It’s amazing that it’s been nearly 30 years since this WrestleMania and Nelson still looks the same. For those wondering why they announced the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and are at the Sports Arena, WWF’s official reason was the move was done for security reasons following Sgt. Slaughter’s storyline as an Iraqi sympathizer. The real reason is the ticket sales were awful and they had no chance of selling the coliseum out.
Gorilla Monsoon welcomes us to the show. He is at ringside and introduces Hacksaw Jim Duggan as the guest commentator for the next match. Duggan is dressed up like Uncle Sam and is carrying his trusty 2×4. Monsoon runs down the matches on tonight’s WrestleMania, including a Retirement Match with Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior. Duggan is asked about Sgt. Slaughter turning on America. Duggan says Hulk Hogan will take it to Slaughter like the American Armed Forces are taking it to Saddam Hussein.
Sean Mooney is backstage with The Rockers. Marty Jannetty says they are tag team specialists. Shawn Michaels says Haku and The Barbarian are big and bad, but they’ll be put away by The Rockers.
Haku and The Barbarian w/ Bobby “The Brain” Heenan vs. The Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty)
It’ll be Shawn Michaels starting off against Haku. Haku hooks a side headlock, but Michaels whips him off, drops down, and goes for a leapfrog. Haku catches him in a bearhug and slams him into the corner. Haku whips him hard into the corner and sends him across the ring. Michaels tries to slingshot over him, but Haku catches him. Haku hits the ropes, so Michaels drops down, leapfrogs him, and hits a diving shoulder block for a two count. Michaels wrenches the arm, but Haku punches him back. Michaels ducks a right hand and tags Jannetty in. The Rockers hit a double-team hip toss and drop stereo elbows. The Barbarian runs in and turns them both inside out with a double clothesline! The Rockers duck a double clothesline from Haku and superkick him down. The Rockers then double superkick The Barbarian out of the ring. Haku and Barbarian consult with Heenan at ringside.
The Barbarian gets in the ring with Jannetty. They lock up, and Barbarian knees him before chopping the chest. Barbarian head-butts Jannetty down and stomps him to the apron. Barbarian uppercuts Jannetty. Jannetty punches him back and slides into the ring. Barbarian reverses a whip, but Jannetty counters with a sunset flip attempt. Barbarian doesn’t go down and misses a kick. Michaels comes in as Barbarian lifts Jannetty up. Michaels dropkicks Barbarian, and Jannetty hits a hurricanrana. Jannetty punches away at Barbarian before covering for a two count. Jannetty avoids some punches from Barbarian and wrenches the arm. Haku tags in, and they double head-butt Jannetty down. Haku viciously chops the chest and sends him into the ropes. Jannetty slides through the legs, but Haku lifts him up. Michaels tries to get in the ring, but the referee stops him. Barbarian comes in, and they hotshot Jannetty off the top rope. Haku taunts the crowd. Haku sends him into the ropes for a back elbow. Barbarian tags in, and they kick Jannetty down. Barbarian sends Jannetty into the ropes and press slams him down. Barbarian punches Michaels. Haku comes in, and they choke Jannetty. Haku shoulders Jannetty before sending him into the ropes. Jannetty hits a cross-body block for a two count. Haku stomps him before sending him hard into the corner. Haku hits a pair of backbreakers. Barbarian tags in and covers for a near fall. Barbarian sends Jannetty into the ropes for a tough looking clothesline. Barbarian applies a bearhug to Jannetty. Jannetty punches him, but Barbarian powers him to the corner. A “Weasel” chant picks up. Barbarian sends him hard to the corner again. Jannetty soon boots him back and comes off the second rope, but Barbarian powerslams him out of mid-air! Barbarian goes to the top rope for a diving head-butt, but Jannetty moves.
Michaels and Haku tag in. Michaels punches away at Haku before hitting a jumping back elbow. Michaels punches Haku back and does the 10 punches in the corner before hitting Barbarian with a springboard cross-body block. Haku reverses a whip, but Michaels catches him with a neckbreaker for a two count. Haku thumbs the eyes, but Michaels tries for a sunset flip. Jannetty runs in and hits Haku to take him down. Barbarian breaks up the pin. The Rockers dropkick Barbarian out of the ring. The Rockers hit Haku with a double-team clothesline. Jannetty goes to the top rope and hits a missile dropkick. Michaels comes off the top rope with a cross-body block for the win!

Mike’s Thoughts: This is really on par with what you would expect from a modern WrestleMania opening. A hot act with flashy moves getting the crowd on their feet and starting the show off right. Good win for The Rockers, their final WrestleMania match together. Real life problems would eventually take the team down before the famous segment on The Barber Shop.
“Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage with Regis Philbin, Alex Trebek, and Marla Maples. Philbin talks about having all the wrestlers as guests on his show. Now he’s a guest on their show. Only one guy really scares him: Earthquake. Philbin heard how Earthquake tipped over a Pizza Hut delivery truck and ate all the contents inside. Maples says she is excited about WrestleMania. She doesn’t know what to expect. Finally, Trebek, who Okerlund calls a “dear, close, personal longtime fan,” calls Okerlund “Jim.” Okerlund corrects him. Trebek does a Jeopardy question about the ring announcer for the main event, which is him.
Dino Bravo w/ “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart vs. “The Texas Tornado” Kerry Von Erich
Bravo immediately attacks Von Erich as he gets in the ring before giving him a clothesline over the top rope. Von Erich is still in his ring gear. Bravo punches away at Von Erich before putting him in the ring. Von Erich hits an atomic drop and clotheslines him down. Von Erich sends him to the corner and signals for the Iron Claw. Bravo blocks it, but soon has a whip to the corner reversed on him. Bravo boots him back, and Von Erich is down. Bravo hits an inverted atomic drop and drops a pair of elbows for a two count. Bravo sends him into the ropes, but Von Erich ducks a pair of clotheslines. Bravo manages to catch him with a sidewalk slam for a near fall. Bravo goes to the second rope for an elbow to the back of the neck. Bravo punches and kicks him in the corner. Bravo goes to the second rope for another elbow, but Von Erich catches him with the Iron Claw. Bravo struggles and gets to the ropes. Von Erich hits the ropes and hits a Tornado Punch for the win.

Mike’s Thoughts: Just a match, but it was striking to me for whatever reason thinking that the two of these guys would be gone in horrible circumstances less than two years later and a month apart; Von Erich from suicide and Bravo by murder. Sometimes watching these shows can fill you with some sadness. Both were young guys and had a lot of life ahead of them.
Sean Mooney is backstage with The Warlord and Slick. Slick says he guarantees Warlord take out Davey Boy Smith. Warlord says no wrestler has escaped his full nelson. Smith will not be the exception to the rule. Slick says Smith is going down.
“Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage with The British Bulldog and Winston the Bulldog. Smith says this is his day. Smith will break the full nelson. Winston says, according to Smith, there is no bull in this bulldog.
The Warlord w/ Slick vs. The British Bulldog
They lock up, and Warlord powers Davey Boy Smith to the corner. They lock up again, and Warlord punches him before clubbing the back. Warlord sends him into the ropes and absorbs a shoulder block from Smith. Smith hits a few more before finally taking him down and out of the ring. The crowd gives Smith a nice hand while Slick talks with the Warlord. Warlord clubs away at Smith’s back before sending him to the ropes. Smith goes for a crucifix pin, but Warlord counters into a slam. Warlord hits the ropes and drops a trio of elbows for a two count. Warlord sends him hard into the corner and applies a bearhug. The crowd is firmly behind Bulldog and rooting him on. Smith punches out and claps the ears. Smith hits the ropes and leaps, but Warlord counters into a hotshot off the top rope for a near fall. Warlord argues the count with the referee.
Smith punches back at Warlord before Warlord hits him with a belly-to-belly side suplex. Warlord taunts the crowd, and Slick is more than pleased. Warlord hits a snapmare and applies a chin lock. Warlord cinches it in and holds it on for a while. Smith eventually fights up and elbows out before hitting a head-butt and a dropkick. Warlord stumbles to the corner and doesn’t go down. Smith bounces Warlord off the top turnbuckle 10 times before going to the second rope and hitting a diving punch. Smith hits a running cross-body block for a two count. Warlord sends him into the ropes, but he lowers his head and eats a kick. Smith goes for a piledriver, but Warlord counters with a back body drop. Smith holds on and goes for a sunset flip. Warlord sits on him for a two count, and Smith rolls him up for a two count. Smith sends him to the corner, but he runs into a boot. Warlord stands over Smith as he struggles to get up. Warlord applies a full nelson, but he doesn’t have the fingers locked. Smith begins to fade, but he gets fired up and powers out of it. Warlord is stunned. Warlord goes for a slam, but Smith gets out and hits a Running Powerslam for the win!

The British Bulldog celebrates in the ring with his mascot, Winston the Bulldog.
Mike’s Thoughts: Wow, Warlord and Bulldog looked absolutely gassed to the gills. This was an ok match. The crowd was super into Bulldog, but it was just super scary watching them both so huge on steroids plodding around the ring.
“Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage with The Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart. Hart says they’re nasty and are going to become the next WWF Tag Team Champions. Jerry Sags says The Hart Foundation will find out what the nasty sensation is all about. Brian Knobbs says they’re taking the Hart Foundation down. They’ll be the new champions when the smoke clears. Knobbs and Sags blow their noses in Okerlund’s handkerchief before putting it in his pocket.
Sean Mooney is elsewhere backstage with WWF Tag Team Champions The Hart Foundation. Jim Neidhart shouts that in order to crack the foundation, you have to be right at the bottom. That’s right where they’ll be. Bret Hart says The Nasty Boys will go back to the bottom of the barrel. They’re scum and don’t have the heart to take the Tag Team Championships.

The Nasty Boys (Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags) w/ “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart vs. The Hart Foundation (Bret “Hitman” Hart and Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart, c’s)
Macaulay Culkin is shown watching from ringside. Gorilla Monsoon calls him “that youngster.”
Bret Hart will start against Jerry Sags. They lock up, and Hart powers him to the corner before the referee steps between them. Sags punches Hart down and kicks him in the midsection. Sags sends him into the ropes, but Hart takes him down with a Lou Thesz Press before punching away at him. Brian Knobbs runs in, so Hart gives him an inverted atomic drop. Hart punches Sags down and punches Knobbs out of the ring. Sags goes to the apron, so Hart brings him in the hard way. Hart punches away at Sags before having a whip reversed. Hart blocks a big boot, takes him down, and stomps the midsection. Knobbs tags in and taunts Neidhart. Hart tags Neidhart in. They lock up, and Knobbs powers him to the corner before punching away at him. Neidhart turns him around and waffles him with some forearms. Neidhart sends Knobbs to the corner and hip tosses him. Neidhart then shoulder blocks Knobbs out of the ring before knocking Sags off the apron. The crowd is going wild.
Jimmy Hart talks with The Nasty Boys at ringside. Knobbs gets back in the ring, and Neidhart takes him down by the arm. Knobbs powers him to his corner and punches before tagging Sags in. Sags punches away at Neidhart before sending him into the ropes, but Neidhart soon takes him down. Hart tags in and punches Sags a few times before bouncing him in the corner. Hart does the 10 punches in the corner. Hart sends him into the ropes and punches the midsection before hitting a leg sweep. Hart goes to the second rope and connects with a diving elbow. Knobbs comes in, but Hart punches him down. Hart goes back to Sags, but Knobbs clubs Hart in the back of the neck. Sags clotheslines Hart down, and Hart rolls out of the ring to recover. Neidhart checks on his partner. Neidhart then chases Jimmy Hart around the ring.
Hart gets back in the ring, and Sags whips him hard into the corner. Hart collapses in pain. Sags hits a backbreaker and covers for a two count. Sags attacks the back before applying a modified camel clutch. Hart fights up, but Sags takes him down and tags Knobbs in. Knobbs attacks the back and applies a modified camel clutch. Hart tries to fight up again, so Knobbs jumps on the back. Sags tags in and hits a hangman’s neckbreaker for a near fall. Sags goes back to the modified camel clutch, but Hart fights up and hits a neckbreaker. Knobbs quickly tags in and hits Neidhart before dropping some elbows on Hart’s back. Knobbs then goes back to the modified camel clutch. Hart fights up with Knobbs on his back and falls back to break the hold. Sags runs in and hits Neidhart. The referee holds Neidhart back. The Nasty Boys send Hart to the corner, but Hart avoids an avalanche from Knobbs and clotheslines Sags. Hart tags Neidhart in, but the referee’s back is turned. The referee kicks Neidhart out of the ring. Jimmy Hart tosses Knobbs his megaphone. Knobbs goes to hit Hart, but he ducks, causing Knobbs to hit Sags!
Neidhart tags in and punches Knobbs down. Neidhart throws Knobbs into Sags before double clotheslining The Nasty Boys. Neidhart hits Knobbs with a back elbow and clubs him for a near fall. Neidhart hits a big powerslam, but Sags breaks up the pin. Hart runs in and punches Sags out of the ring. Knobbs applies a side headlock to Neidhart. Neidhart whips him off, and Knobbs collides with Sags. The Hart Foundation hits Knobbs with The Hart Attack. The referee kicks Hart out of the ring. Jimmy Hart throws his helmet into the ring, and Sags hits Neidhart in the head with it while the referee was distracted! Knobbs covers Neidhart for the win!

The Nasty Boys celebrate big time with the WWF Tag Team Championships. Jimmy Hart is absolutely elated.
Mike’s Thoughts: Fun tag match. The Hart Foundation and The Nasty Boys actually wound up being pretty good. I’m used to seeing The Nasty Boys in car wreck matches, but this was pretty tame for them and it worked well. The crowd was super into it. This was the final match for The Hart Foundation before splitting to go on a singles path. For Bret, it worked out. For Jim, he would struggle to find his footing for a few years.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts, fully recovered from being blinded by Rick Martel’s Arrogance, says that humans only have five senses, but a snake has six. The snake always does better in the dark.

“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Jake “The Snake” Roberts
The blindfolds are put on both men, and the bell rings. They feel around the ring before Roberts starts pointing. The crowd cheers let him know that he’s facing Martel’s direction. They start to creep toward each other before walking right by. The crowd lets Roberts know he’s pointing in the cold direction. Martel is crawling on the mat before Roberts finally finds him. Martel gets away, but he trips over Roberts for a two count. Martel grabs Roberts and punches him before sending him into the ropes. Martel goes for a back body drop, but Roberts just runs by him. Martel is confused.
Roberts starts pointing again, as does Martel. The crowd cheers before they start feeling around for each other. They bump into each other and charge, but they run right by each other. They eventually find each other, and Martel scoop slams Roberts. Martel goes for an elbow drop, but Roberts already moved. Roberts accidentally grabs the referee, but he scurries away. Martel finds the referee and accidentally threatens him. They’re still trying to find each other. Martel is crawling around and reaching out to feel. Roberts gets the crowd going and finds Martel. Martel holds onto the ropes to keep Roberts back. They’re separated by the referee. Roberts starts to creep close to Martel. Martel crawls to the corner and accidentally touches Damian in the burlap sack. Martel skitters away terrified. Roberts grabs him by the ankle, but Martel gets away. Roberts smacks the mat in frustration.
Roberts points again, and the crowd lets him know that he’s on the right track. They approach each other in the center of the ring. Roberts hooks him with a side headlock, but Martel whips him off. They clunk heads, and Roberts falls out of the ring. Martel goes outside the ring and grabs a chair. Martel jabs it in the air, but Roberts is nowhere close to him. Roberts is already in the ring. Martel swings at nothing and hits the ring post. Roberts finds him and drags him into the ring. Martel punches him away and hits a backbreaker. Martel the applies a Boston Crab. Roberts manages to power out. Martel backs into Roberts, and Roberts hits him with the DDT! Roberts crawls around to find him and picks up the win!
Winner by Pinfall: Jake “The Snake” Roberts
Jake “The Snake” looks down at the spray can of Arrogance and stomps on it. Roberts goes to the bag and brings out Damian. Roberts goes over to Martel and throws Damian onto him. Martel quickly runs away, leaving Roberts to celebrate in the ring with Damian.
Mike’s Thoughts: To me, this is such an underrated WrestleMania gem. It’s yet another masterclass of crowd psychology from Jake “The Snake” Roberts. I really believe only Roberts could have pulled this off, but he had a great dance partner with Rick Martel. They were wearing gimmicked blindfolds, but they organized this match wonderfully and had the crowd with them. 3/4 of the match was just them trying to find each other. Fun to watch. Jake “The Snake” at his best.
Marla Maples is backstage with new WWF Tag Team Champions The Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart. They are celebrating big time and drinking champagne. The Mountie comes up and celebrates with them. They spray champagne everywhere. Earthquake also shows up. They drench each other in champagne, including Maples.
“Superfly” Jimmy Snuka vs. The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer
The Undertaker stares coldly at Snuka. Snuka briefly turns his back on him, so Undertaker blindsides him. Undertaker punches him before bouncing him off the turnbuckle. Undertaker punches him before choking him against the ropes. Undertaker sends Snuka into the ropes and takes him out with a flipping lariat. Undertaker rips at the face before putting him in the corner. Snuka reverses a whip, but he runs into Undertaker’s boot. Snuka rolls out of the ring to recover. Snuka gets on the apron, so Undertaker suplexes him back into the ring. Undertaker goes for an elbow drop, but Snuka moves. Bearer looks pained at ringside. Snuka comes back with a head-butt and some chops. Undertaker reverses a whip into the ropes, so Snuka attempts a running cross-body block. Undertaker dumps, causing Snuka to hit the top rope and fall out of the ring. Snuka gets on the apron and tries to punch him back before hitting a springboard, but Undertaker catches him. Undertaker puts him down and punches him before lifting him up. Undertaker connects with a Tombstone Piledriver to pick up his first WrestleMania win.

Mike’s Thoughts: The humble beginnings of what would become one of the greatest things in professional wrestling history: The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania. It happened by accident (though I’m sure one day they’ll make a documentary saying Vince McMahon knew in 1991 that Mark Callaway would become one of the longest enduring and most profitable stars ever) and morphed into something legendary when people started to realize what was going on. For a few years, Streak matches were the best and most hyped matches on the WrestleMania card. The Undertaker and arguably WrestleMania haven’t been the same since the end of the streak in 2014. Awesome to see it come together and start here.

“The Macho King” Randy Savage w/ Sensational Queen Sherri vs. The Ultimate Warrior
The crowd is absolutely going crazy over this match. The bell hasn’t even sounded yet. The bell rings, and Savage hits the ropes and stares at Warrior. Savage then gets on the turnbuckle and taunts the crowd to boos. Warrior gets on the opposite corner and poses to cheers. They lock up, and Warrior shoves him into the ropes, but Savage soon turns him and gives a clean break before talking trash. They lock up again, and Warrior powers him down before getting pumped up. Savage knees Warrior in the midsection and punches him in the face. Savage clubs the back before hooking the side headlock. Warrior whips him off and shoulder blocks him down. Savage gets out of the ring before getting in and blindsiding him. Savage hits the ropes, but Warrior clotheslines him down. Warrior lifts him up by the neck with two hands before slamming him down. Warrior hits an inverted atomic drop before hitting a regular atomic drop. Warrior lifts him up with two hands again. Sherri gets in the ring, so Warrior throws Savage into her. Sherri is knocked out of the ring.
Warrior punches Savage against the ropes. Savage’s arms get tied up, and Warrior punches him. Warrior punches Savage in the midsection before sending him into the ropes, but he lowers his head and eats a kick. Savage then takes him down with a clothesline. Savage goes to the top rope for a cross-body block, but Warrior catches him. Warrior puts him on his feet and taunts him. Savage angrily gets out of the ring and thinks about his next move. Sherri gets on the apron and shouts. Savage grabs a steel chair and throws it in. The referee immediately throws it out. While the referee is doing that, Savage attacks Warrior from behind. Warrior quickly comes back with some right hands to take him down. Warrior sends Savage into the corner and stomps away at him. Miss Elizabeth is calmly watching from the audience. Warrior punches Savage down a few times before hitting a clothesline. Warrior sends him to the corner and goes for an avalanche, but Savage moves. Warrior hits the turnbuckle hard and falls out of the ring. Sherri goes over, grabs the Warrior by the hair, and punches him in the face. Savage then wipes Warrior out with a double axe handle off the top rope to the floor. Sherri grabs Warrior again and punches him a few times. Warrior simply shoves her down.
Savage attacks Warrior from behind and sends him hard into the ring post. Savage gets in the ring, and the referee stops him from going outside. Sherri kicks Warrior in the midsection. Savage pulls Warrior into the ring and hits a scoop slam before dropping the knee for a near fall. Savage goes for a neckbreaker, but Warrior counters into a backslide for a two count. Savage intensely looks at Warrior. Sherri gets on the apron to distract, but Savage gets caught trying to blindside Warrior. Warrior hits Savage with a short-arm clothesline before hitting the ropes for a big splash, but Savage moves. Savage slams his face off the mat for a two count. Savage goes to a chin lock and cinches it in. Sherri gets on the apron and screams at Warrior to quit. Referee Earl Hebner pushes her off. Warrior begins to fight up and elbows out. Warrior hits the ropes and hits a shoulder block. Savage gets up and hits the ropes, and they take each other out with a double clothesline. Sherri grabs Savage’s wrist and tries to shake him awake. Sherri distracts the referee as Warrior gets up and catches Savage with an inside cradle. Warrior had him pinned for a while before the referee began counting, getting him only a two count.
Savage knocks Warrior into the referee to take him down. Savage holds Warrior up as Sherri goes to the top rope. She comes off, but Warrior moves and Sherri hits Savage. Warrior intimidates Sherri out of the ring and stalks her at ringside. Warrior scares her into the ring and grabs her, but Savage rolls him up for a near fall. Warrior quickly takes Savage down and punches him. Savage pulls him hard into the corner and rips at the face. Savage hits a hotshot off the top rope. Savage grabs Warrior by the hair and jumps over the top rope to hotshot him again. Savage clotheslines him in the back of the head and hits a scoop slam for a near fall. Savage goes to the top rope and hits a Diving Elbow Drop. Savage gets up and goes back to the top rope for another Diving Elbow Drop! Savage goes back to the top rope once again and connects with a third devastating Diving Elbow Drop! Savage gets to his feet and hits a FOURTH Diving Elbow Drop! Back to the top rope, Savage connects with a FIFTH and final Diving Elbow Drop, but Warrior just barely kicks out. Savage is absolutely stunned.
Warrior is trying to get some energy back and begins shaking the ropes as Savage is clubbing him. Warrior begins to dance around the ring and punches Savage down a few times before hitting the ropes and hitting three clotheslines. Warrior signals for the end. Miss Elizabeth is on the edge of her seat looking nervous. Warrior lifts Savage up for a press slam and connects with a big splash… but Savage kicks out! Donald Trump is shown at ringside looking like he’s enjoying the match. Warrior looks to the ceiling and begins to stare at his hands. Warrior looks up and then back at his hands, talking to “the gods.” Warrior then goes to leave the ring. The referee tries to explain that the match is not over and his career is on the line. Meanwhile in the ring, Savage is starting to come to. Savage then blindsides the Warrior as he is still talking to his hands.
Savage puts Warrior on the barricade and has Sherri hold his neck on it. Savage goes to the top rope and dives off, but Warrior punches him out of mid-air! Savage crashes and burns on the barricade. Warrior puts Savage in the ring and shakes the ropes. Warrior hits the ropes and shoulder tackles Savage right out of the ring. Warrior goes outside and puts Savage back in the ring. Warrior hits the ropes again and wipes Savage out with another shoulder tackle that sends him out of the ring. Warrior puts Savage back in the ring a third time and gets him to his feet. Warrior hits the ropes and crushes Savage with a shoulder tackle that once again sends him out of the ring. Warrior pulls him in by the hair and simply puts a foot on his chest for the win.
Winner by Pinfall: The Ultimate Warrior
Randy Savage’s career is over. Queen Sherri is absolutely stunned at ringside and looks like she has a busted lip. Warrior goes outside, puts his jacket on, gets back in the ring, and poses on the turnbuckles. Warrior then puts a foot on Savage again and poses. Warrior shakes the ropes and leaves the ring.
Queen Sherri takes the referee out and removes her skirt. She is screaming at Savage and kicks him in the ribs a few times. Miss Elizabeth is watching from ringside and looking emotional. Miss Elizabeth then hops the barricade and gets in the ring. She grabs Sherri by the hair and throws her out of the ring! The crowd is going wild.
Miss Elizabeth tries to help Savage up, but he doesn’t know it’s her. Savage pulls himself up and sees Miss Elizabeth. Savage asks what she is doing in the ring. The referee pulls Sherri away and sends her to the back. Miss Elizabeth is tearing up. Savage looks conflicted and thinks about his next move. Savage and Miss Elizabeth then embrace in the ring to a HUGE reception! Gorilla Monsoon exclaims, “What a woman and what a man!” Savage puts Miss Elizabeth on his shoulder and waves to the crowd. Fans are shown crying at ringside. Bobby Heenan thinks their shoes are too tight or had a chili dog with onions. Savage and Miss Elizabeth walk around the ring. She holds the ropes open for him, but he stops her. Savage then holds the ropes open for Miss Elizabeth to exit the ring. Savage stands in the ring alone and soaks in the adulation from the crowd. Savage poses on the turnbuckles for the final time. Miss Elizabeth is beaming at ringside. Savage and Miss Elizabeth walk up the ramp.
Mike’s Thoughts: The whole story of this match is really what happened after the match with the long awaited reunion of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. They did not disappoint at all. It was one hell of a moment and one of the more memorable in WrestleMania history. The match itself with the Ultimate Warrior wasn’t bad. It’s not as good as some people claim it is. I liked the intensity throughout and kicking out of the finishers, but when Warrior randomly started talking to his hands, they started to lose me. Then the hideous finish of Warrior hitting some shoulder tackles and pinning Savage with one foot on his chest… I hated that up and down. Still, the big moment wasn’t the retirement so much as the reuniting of Savage and Miss Elizabeth, and that was tremendous.
There must have been a break that was edited out on the WWE Network. They show the WrestleMania graphic and we go to ringside to see Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan talking about the upcoming matches.
We go backstage to see Regis Philbin with The Undertaker and Paul Bearer. Philbin asks what they think of WrestleMania. They say nothing. Undertaker starts measuring Philbin for a coffin. Philbin wants to know what’s in the urn, but they still say nothing.
Alex Trebek is backstage with Demolition and Mr. Fuji. Smash and Crush are representing Demolition. Trebek talks about having all the answers on Jeopardy and the contestants have to answer in questions. Smash says everyone thinks they have all the answers, but only Master Fuji has them. Crush says Master Fuji knows all about pain, torturing, and suffering.
Back to Regis Philbin, he’s there Genichiro Tenryu and Koji Kitao. Philbin asks how they’re doing, but they don’t speak anything. Philbin asks if they speak English, but they don’t respond. Philbin then says, “Toyota” and “Isuzu,” causing them to respond. They only mention they want Kathy Lee.
We go back to Alex Trebek with Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Damian. Trebek is not comfortable around Damian. Roberts says Damian is a big fan. Reptiles of the World is his favorite category. Roberts scares Trebek away. Roberts says Damian will have to settle for the home version of Jeopardy.
Demolition (Smash and Crush) vs. Genichiro Tenryu and Koji Kitao
Crush attacks Kitao from behind to begin the match. Kitao reverses a whip into the ropes and forearms him. Smash runs in to attack. Tenryu tries to get Crush away, but the referee stops him. Fuji hits Kitao in the back with his cane. Smash tags in and hits a back suplex on Kitao. Smash clubs away at Kitao before tagging Crush back in. Crush comes off the top rope with a club to the back. Crush hits a scoop slam and tags Smash back in. Smash punches Kitao a few times before choking him on the ropes. Crush tags back in and punches Kitao. Crush head-butts him against the ropes before bringing Smash back in. Smash punches Kitao and puts him in the corner. Smash sends him to the corner and charges, but Kitao clotheslines him down.
Tenryu tags in and chops Smash before dropkicking Crush out of the ring. Tenryu hits a scoop slam on Smash before going for a diving elbow drop, but Smash moves. Smash takes Tenryu down and tags Crush in. Crush hits a backbreaker before tagging Smash back in. Smash hits Tenryu with a back suplex before setting him up. Kitao cuts Crush off before he can interfere but Crush quickly throws him out of the ring. Crush goes to the top rope, but Kitao throws him off the top rope to the floor. Tenryu hits an enzuigiri to Smash before giving him a powerbomb for the win.

Mike’s Thoughts: This was just a big nothing match in terms of action, but a really cringey showing by WWF. The plethora of Japanese jokes just has not aged well at all. I’m not trying to be retroactively moral here, but hindsight is always 20/20. Still it just shows the theme of this company throughout their history that they have very rarely ever taken the high road. Well this entire WrestleMania is built on them not taking the high road.
“Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage with the Big Boss Man. Boss Man says he will be the Intercontinental Champion when all is said and done. The days and weeks and months of insults have hurt his momma’s feelings. When you hurt his momma’s feelings, you hurt his. Boss Man has mowed down all the members of the Heenan Family except Mr. Perfect. There are no chances of appeal or a stay of execution. He’ll make a perfect example that crime does not pay.
Sean Mooney is backstage with WWF Intercontinental Champion Mr. Perfect and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. Heenan talks about being in Los Angeles and the police department. He talks about someone privately filming a bad moment with the police department. Tonight, they show their own brand of justice. Mr. Perfect says he has all the tools to be champion. Perfect is perfect. There’s only one.
WWF Intercontinental Championship
Big Boss Man vs. Mr. Perfect (c) w/ Bobby “The Brain” Heenan
Lord Alfred Hayes will be on commentary for the next match with Bobby Heenan managing Mr. Perfect at ringside.
The bell rings, and Boss Man throws Perfect’s towel in his face. Perfect goes to throw it back, but Boss Man swipes it away. Boss Man then spits in Perfect’s face. Perfect looks furious and slaps Boss Man in the face. Boss Man simply smiles, so Perfect gets out of the ring. Boss Man follows him out of the ring and slaps him off his feet. Boss Man puts Perfect in the ring and swings him around by the hair. Boss Man punches Perfect to the corner before having a whip reversed. Boss Man slides out of the ring and gets back in. Perfect ducks a clothesline and attacks, but Boss Man immediately clotheslines him down before sending him over the top rope. Perfect talks to Bobby Heenan at ringside, and a “Weasel” chant fires up.
Boss Man punches Perfect as he gets back in the ring and sends him to the corner. Boss Man charges, but Perfect moves. Perfect punches and chops Boss Man in the corner. Boss Man then comes back and absolutely wipes Perfect out with a whip to the corner. Boss Man follows up with a splash against the ropes. Boss Man struts around the ring and takes his belt off. Boss Man belts him in the back a few times right in front of the referee. Perfect grabs the belt, wraps it around his fist, and punches Boss Man down. Perfect kicks and punches Boss Man to the corner and sends him hard into the corner. Boss Man collapses in pain. Perfect then goes to the chin lock. Perfect clubs the back and applies an abdominal stretch. Bobby Heenan goes over to the timekeeper and tells him to ring the bell and end the match. The timekeeper declines. Perfect releases the hold and dropkicks him down for a two count. Perfect chops and punches him to the corner. Perfect hits a snapmare and connects with a rolling neck snapper. Perfect tries for the Perfect-Plex, but Boss Man counters into an inside cradle for a near fall. Perfect quickly hits a reverse rolling neck snapper for a near fall.
Perfect goes to the top rope and jumps, but Boss Man gets a boot up in the face. Bobby Heenan cannot believe that happened. Boss Man bounces Perfect in the corner and causes him to do a 360. Boss Man throws him across the ring, goes outside, and pulls the feet back to crotch him on the ring post. Boss Man pulls him into the ring and head-butts him a few times before hitting some jabs and an uppercut that sends him flying out of the ring. Boss Man intimidates Bobby Heenan back, so Perfect sends him headfirst into the ring steps. Heenan gets some cheap shots in.
André the Giant walks down to the ring to a HUGE reception! Bobby Heenan is terrified and runs away. André grabs the Intercontinental Championship. Perfect removes the top turnbuckle pad. Perfect bounces Boss Man off the exposed turnbuckle, but literally everyone missed it. Perfect isn’t happy André is holding the championship. Perfect tries to grab it, but André absolutely levels him with the belt. Boss Man slowly gets to his feet and covers, but Perfect kicks out. All of a sudden, Haku and The Barbarian run in and attack Boss Man.
Winner by Disqualification: Big Boss Man
Mr. Perfect retains the WWF Intercontinental Championship
Boss Man fights them both off. At ringside, André takes Haku and Barbarian out, including sending Barbarian into the ring post. Big Boss Man shakes hands with André the Giant at ringside. They both walk to the back.
Mike’s Thoughts: Fun match with an unimaginative ending. I absolutely loved watching Mr. Perfect bump around for Boss Man. These guys meshed better than I would have imagined. Nice to see André the Giant make an appearance. This would be his final appearance at a WrestleMania.
“Mean” Gene Okerlund is at ringside with Donald Trump. Trump is loving the matches. Trump hopes to have WrestleMania back at Atlantic City. Chuck Norris comes up and talks about how great the athletes are. Norris talks about working out with Hulk Hogan. Henry Winkler is then interviewed. Winkler says he’s happy The Ultimate Warrior got his ultimate win. Lou Ferrigno comes up and says this is better than the Olympics and the circus.
Earthquake w/ “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart vs. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine
They lock up, and Earthquake powers him to the corner before clubbing him down. Earthquake punches him before hitting a big powerslam. Earthquake poses and covers for a two count. Earthquake head-butts him to the corner and charges, but Valentine moves. Valentine chops and clubs Earthquake in the corner. Valentine goes for a whip, but Earthquake reverses it to the corner. Valentine comes out and clubs him in the face. Earthquake sends him into the ropes, but Valentine elbows him in the head. Valentine chops and punches away at him. Earthquake is staggering. Valentine hits a clothesline, but Earthquake doesn’t go down. Valentine comes off the second rope with an elbow that takes Earthquake down. Valentine drops an elbow and head-butts the midsection. Valentine goes for a Figure Four Leglock but lets go when Hart started shouting at him. Hart gets on the apron, so Valentine goes after him. Earthquake low blows him and drops an elbow. Earthquake stomps around the ring before hitting the Earthquake Splash for the win.

Earthquake sets up for an Aftershock, but Valentine rolls out of the ring. Earthquake shouts at the audience before leaving the ring.
Mike’s Thoughts: Typical Earthquake squash match. Nothing happening here. Would have liked to have seen Earthquake involved in some kind of story heading into a WrestleMania.
Sean Mooney is backstage with The Legion of Doom. Animal says all the people know they should be champions right now, but Power and Glory interfered. They’re going down tonight. They’re coming after The Nasty Boys next. Hawk says when they get done with Power and Glory, they’ll be sour and gory. AWW WHAT A RUSH!
Power and Glory (Hercules and Paul Roma) w/ Slick vs. The Legion of Doom (Animal and Hawk)
Power and Glory blindside LOD at the start of the match, but Hawk soon takes their heads off with a double clothesline. Roma scoop slams Animal and goes to the top rope. Roma leaps, but Animal catches him and hits a powerslam. Hawk sends Hercules into the ring post and goes to the top rope. Animal gets Roma on his shoulders. LOD hits the Doomsday Device for the win!

Mike’s Thoughts: There’s never a bad time to watch a Road Warriors squash match. This made lots of sense too with Power and Glory costing LOD a shot at the Tag Team Titles. They look like dominant challengers for The Nasty Boys.

“The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase vs. Virgil w/ “Rowdy” Roddy Piper
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper came down to the ring on a crutch due to a motorcycle accident. Piper grabs a microphone and invites Virgil down to the ring. Virgil gets a nice reaction coming down to the ring.
The bell rings, and Virgil circles around DiBiase. DiBiase laughs and talks to Piper. Virgil jabs DiBiase a few times and takes him down. DiBiase is stunned. Virgil punches him back and jabs away at him again. Virgil drops him with a punch, and DiBiase rolls out of the ring to think about his strategy. DiBiase gets back in the ring and angrily talks to the referee. Virgil continues to jab away at DiBiase and takes him down again. DiBiase rolls out of the ring and punches the mat. Piper runs up to Virgil and shakes hands with him. DiBiase walks over to Piper, who invites him to get back in the ring.
Virgil brings DiBiase in the ring the hard way and hits a clothesline before clotheslining him over the top rope. Virgil goes outside and throws DiBiase back into the ring. DiBiase quickly kicks him coming in the ring and connects with a clothesline. DiBiase hits the ropes, but Virgil hits a back elbow for a two count. DiBiase once again rolls out of the ring and is furious. DiBiase gets back in the ring, and the referee checks Virgil at his request. Virgil then takes DiBiase down. DiBiase quickly hits a drop-toe-hold and slams Virgil’s face off the mat. DiBiase bounces him in the corner before chopping the chest. DiBiase sends him into the ropes and hits a back elbow. DiBiase sends Virgil back into the ropes and connects with a back elbow. DiBiase taunts Piper before hitting Virgil with a piledriver. DiBiase covers for a near fall. DiBiase hits a suplex for another near fall. DiBiase hits a gutwrench suplex for a two count.
DiBiase throws Virgil out of the ring in front of Piper. Piper gets out of the way while DiBiase chops Virgil. DiBiase puts Virgil in the ring and punches Piper down! DiBiase sends Virgil into the ropes for a powerslam. Piper pulls himself up and pulls the top rope down as DiBiase hits the ropes. DiBiase falls out of the ring. DiBiase once again punches Piper down. Piper gets up, and DiBiase kicks him down. The referee then counts DiBiase out, and DiBiase cannot believe it!
Winner by Count-Out: Virgil
DiBiase immediately attacks Virgil and puts him out with the Million Dollar Dream. Piper struggles to get in the ring and hits DiBiase with the crutch. Sensational Sherri all of a sudden runs down and grabs the crutch out of Piper’s hands. DiBiase attacks Piper from behind and slams the injured knee off the mat. They pull Piper’s knee brace down, and DiBiase smashes the crutch off the knee. Piper screams in pain. Virgil runs in and clears the ring. Referees try to help Piper up, but he fights them away. Virgil gets on the microphone and tells Piper to follow the advice he gave him: get up! Piper gets to his feet, and the crowd cheers. Piper and Virgil embrace in the ring.
Mike’s Thoughts: Just a match. DiBiase worked hard to make Virgil look good… but there’s really not much you can do to make Virgil look good. Even with a bum knee, Piper was a lot of fun here and did a good job in the post-match.
Sean Mooney is backstage and showcases some videos leading up to the WWF Championship match. Two weeks ago, Sgt. Slaughter burned a Hulk Hogan t-shirt. WWF Champion Sgt. Slaughter and General Adnan join Mooney. Adnan shouts in his native tongue. Slaughter laughs. Slaughter calls Mooney a piece of human waste. Slaughter tells the ultimate slime Hulk Hogan to listen up. Slaughter says he is the new ruler of the World Wrestling Federation. Hogan is playing by his rules. He is the WWF Champion and there is nothing Hogan can do about it.
Footage is shown of Slaughter attacking Hogan with a steel chair on The Main Event. It makes him feel so good to beat the immortal slime. Tonight, Hogan will be defeated by the new rules, Sgt. Slaughter. Slaughter might get disqualified, which wouldn’t give Hogan the title. Hogan would win the battle, but not the war. Slaughter could even be counted out. When it’s all over and done, he’ll still be laughing.
The Mountie w/ “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart vs. Tito Santana
They lock up, and Santana hooks a side headlock. Mountie whips him off and leapfrogs him, but Santana hits him with a running cross-body block. Mountie gets out of the ring, but Santana gets out of the ring. Santana attacks Mountie and Hart before putting Mountie in the ring. Santana hits an atomic drop. The referee is knocked back as Hart hands Santana a cattle prod. Mountie stuns Santana and covers for the win.
Winner by Pinfall: The Mountie
Mike’s Thoughts: A complete and total nothing of a match.
“Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage with Hulk Hogan. Hogan says Sgt. Slaughter may be laughing now, but after WrestleMania VII he won’t have the last laugh. Slaughter will never burn his t-shirt again. As far as Slaughter’s rules are concerned, he only does a ground game. Slaughter has underestimated Hogan. Hogan has secret battleplans.
Okerlund asks if Hogan is the same man after a week ago. Footage is shown of Sgt. Slaughter attacking Hogan with the WWF Championship during a match with General Adnan. Slaughter put Hogan in the Camel Clutch while Adnan held the WWF Title in his face. Hogan says he’s not the same man, but Slaughter will have to tear the heart out of Hogan and America to beat him.
Alex Trebek will be the guest ring announcer, Marla Maples will serve as timekeeper, and Regis Philbin will be on commentary. They make their way to the ring and pose.
WWF Championship
Sgt. Slaughter (c) w/ General Adnan vs. Hulk Hogan
The bell rings, and Slaughter quickly leaves the ring. A loud “USA” chant fires up as Hogan chases Slaughter and Adnan around the ring. They get in the ring, and the referee keeps Hogan back. The referee sends Adnan out of the ring. Slaughter is still in his entrance attire and yells at Hogan. Slaughter calmly removes the attire as the crowd loudly chants for Hogan.
They circle the ring and cautiously approach one another. Slaughter then backs up and makes Hogan wait. They lock up and tussle around the roles for position. Slaughter gets Hogan in the corner before the referee breaks it up. Hogan shoves the referee down and locks up with Slaughter. Hogan eventually throws Slaughter down and poses. Slaughter tells the referee that Hogan pulled his hair. They lock up, and Hogan hooks a side headlock. Hogan cinches it in, but Slaughter soon whips him off. Hogan goes for a shoulder block, but Slaughter doesn’t go down. Hogan hits the ropes again and shoulder blocks him. This time Slaughter goes down hard. Slaughter rolls out of the ring to recover. Hogan goes outside and attacks Slaughter. General Adnan grabs Hogan, so Hogan grabs him by the throat. Slaughter grabs a chair and hits Hogan in the back with it in full view of the referee. Hogan isn’t fazed by it.
Hogan gets him in the ring, and Slaughter begs him off before poking him in the eyes. Slaughter punches Hogan around the ring before bouncing him off the top turnbuckle. A loud “USA” chant picks up. Slaughter sends Hogan into the ropes for a back elbow. Slaughter stomps Hogan before punching him down. Slaughter drops some knees before going for an elbow drop, but Hogan moves. Hogan punches Slaughter before clotheslining him down. Adnan gets on the apron, so Hogan punches him off. Hogan kicks Slaughter before sending him into the corner and hitting a corner clothesline. Hogan wipes him out with an atomic drop for a two count. Slaughter goes outside, but Hogan rakes the back and sends him back into the ring. Hogan sends him into the ropes and hits an elbow to the face for a two count. Hogan bounces Slaughter off the turnbuckles before slamming his face off the top of the ring post. Hogan sends Slaughter into the corner before hitting a back body drop. Hogan sends him hard into the corner before whipping him across the ring, causing Slaughter to hit the ring post face-first. Hogan knees him into the corner and catapults him into the ring post. Hogan punches away at Slaughter before sending him to the corner for a clothesline. Hogan hits the 10 punches in the corner before bouncing his face off the turnbuckle for a near fall. Hogan looks frustrated. Hogan goes to the second turnbuckle for a diving axe handle. Hogan hits a scoop slam and drops some elbows. Hogan goes to the top rope, but Adnan grabs the ankle. Slaughter then slams Hogan off the top rope to the canvas.
Slaughter waits for Hogan to get up and clotheslines him out of the ring. Slaughter sends Hogan into the ring post before cracking him in the back with the chair a few times. The referee sees every shot and doesn’t call for a disqualification. Slaughter then chokes Hogan with a cable. A loud “Hogan” chant fires up. Slaughter puts Hogan in the ring and clubs the back a few times. Slaughter works on the back and hits a backbreaker for a two count. Slaughter argues with the referee over the count. Slaughter stomps the back and goes for a Boston Crab. Hogan fights it, but Slaughter turns him over to apply the Boston Crab. Hogan screams in pain. They’re really close to the ropes, so Hogan grabs the bottom rope with not much drama. Slaughter clubs Hogan down and drops some knees. Slaughter goes to the top rope for a diving stomp and connects. Adnan is distracting the referee while Slaughter is covering Hogan. Slaughter has Hogan down for a while before the referee and Adnan realize. Hogan kicks out at two.
Slaughter is furious and cracks Hogan in the head with the steel chair. Hogan is bleeding. Slaughter punches away at the cut and stomps Hogan. Slaughter hits a short-arm clothesline before applying a Camel Clutch. Slaughter releases the hold after a few moments before stomping the back. Slaughter then reapplies the Camel Clutch. Hogan’s face is a crimson mask. General Adnan is loving what he’s seeing at ringside. Hogan listens to the roar of the crowd and fights up with Slaughter on his back. Hogan charges, but Slaughter slides off and sends him sternum-first into the corner. Slaughter covers Hogan with the Iraqi flag and pins, but Hogan kicks out. Hogan tears the flag up and begins to Hulk Up. Hogan wags a finger in Slaughter’s face before punching him back. Hogan sends him to the ropes for a big boot. Hogan drops a leg for the win.
Winner by Pinfall and new WWF Champion: Hulk Hogan
Hogan puts the WWF Championship around his waist and waves the American Flag around the ring. Gorilla Monsoon says, “The war is officially over.” Hogan poses for the crowd. Donald Trump is shown at ringside smiling broadly. Hogan continues to pose and wave the American Flag around as WrestleMania VII comes to an end.
Mike’s Thoughts: If this didn’t have the craziness of the Gulf War going on at the time and Sgt. Slaughter becoming an Iraqi sympathizer (which was one of the more bottom of the barrel storylines in their history), this would be a really bad main event. With the heat, it was passable, but it was a drop-off from the previous two Hogan main events, which were really good. One thing I really didn’t get was Adnan distracting the referee while Slaughter was pinning Hogan for a while. That’s usually a spot that goes to a face that’s going to lose, not a heel and certainly not by the heel’s manager if the manager isn’t turning. Just stupid. Then having Gorilla Monsoon saying, “The war is over,” and Hogan saying leading into the show that the Gulf War would end when he beats Sgt. Slaughter, it’s just incredibly tacky.
Overall, this was just an ok WrestleMania. Some people will probably remember it more fondly than others, but I wasn’t terribly blown away by anything.
