“Then. Now. Forever.” The WWE video leads us into the show.
A video kicks off the show hyping up tonight’s main event with Matt Riddle and Killian Dain.
The Undisputed ERA kicks off the show
The Undisputed ERA makes their way to the ring. NXT Champion Adam Cole says he did everything he said he would. Cole beat Johnny Gargano at TakeOver: Toronto and successfully defended his NXT Championship. An “Adam Cole” chant fires up. People are saying that he had the performance of a lifetime and now it is no longer a question: he is the greatest NXT Champion that has ever lived. If there was an NXT Mt. Rushmore, you wouldn’t find the faces of Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Shinsuke Nakamura, or Finn Balor. It would have Adam Cole’s face four times.

Roderick Strong says that would be beautiful, but all four of them should be standing here tonight draped in gold. The Undisputed prophecy should have been fulfilled, but they got screwed. Strong says Velveteen Dream did not pin him at TakeOver — he pinned Pete Dunne. That means Dream’s North American Championship run is on borrowed time. As soon as Dream stops ducking him, he’ll fulfill his part of the prophecy when he takes the North American Championship.
Kyle O’Reilly says that was well said. O’Reilly then says in order to win a tag team match, you have to pin the legal man. They have a replay shown of Bobby Fish tagging himself in at TakeOver: Toronto. O’Reilly says he rests his case. Fish says they did not lose to the Street Profits at TakeOver: Toronto. Fish says William Regal is a silly prat and need to do his job and make this thing right. Cole says it needs to be made right. What’s right for NXT is the Undisputed ERA draped in gold. O’Reilly and Fish are the greatest tag team in NXT history. It’s only a matter of time before they win the NXT Tag Team Championships. As for Strong, the North American Championship is his property. Cole says they are two steps away from fulfilling the prophecy, being draped in gold, and making NXT Undisputed.
The Undisputed ERA goes to leave, but Jordan Myles’ music hits. The winner of the NXT Breakout Tournament comes out to the stage with his contract in hand. That contract allows him to have an NXT title match of his choosing. A “Jordan” chant picks up. Cole says Myles must be joking. Surely Myles isn’t using that championship opportunity on him. Myles smiles and has a lot of energy, but if he challenges Cole for the title he’ll break the smile off his face. Myles should challenge Shayna Baszler or go to NXT UK or 205 Live. It’s not a knock, but they’re not on the level of Adam Cole, baby. Myles says nothing. Cole says he’ll talk slowly so Myles understands. There is nothing more damaging or detrimental to a young career by wasting an opportunity and challenging him. If Myles makes that mistake, Cole will make his career an undisputed failure. Myles simply extends the contract. Cole goes to grab it, but Myles drops it, smiles at him, and backs off.

Mike’s Thoughts: Good opening segment that puts over the Undisputed ERA’s continued gripes with NXT management and keeps their title feuds going… well for those pursuing a championship. Nice to see NXT Champion Adam Cole moving on a bit and getting a challenge from Jordan Myles. I like having Myles challenge. By winning that contract for a title opportunity against anyone, they had the opportunity to make yet another WWE Stupid Babyface® by challenging for a lesser title, but they actually made him a smart babyface by going for the big title. That was the only way that should have gone, and it worked.
Earlier this week, Bronson Reed was interviewed about being in the NXT Breakout Tournament. Shane Thorne makes fun of Reed for losing, so Reed challenges him to a fight. They’ll face each other later tonight.
Mansoor vs. Damian Priest
The bell rings, and Priest just reclines in the corner. They lock up, and Priest powers him to the corner and gives a clean break. Mansoor shoves him, so Priest shoves him to the corner. Mansoor slides through the legs and forearms him, but Priest viciously responds with a forearm of his own. Priest goes for a suplex, but Mansoor counters into an inside cradle for a two count. Mansoor dropkicks him, but Priest stays on his feet. Mansoor hits a bicycle kick, but Priest is still standing. Mansoor flips through a chokeslam and hits a step-up enzuigiri. Mansoor knocks him out of the ring and hits a summersault senton. Mansoor gets him in the ring and hits a slingshot neckbreaker. Mansoor goes for a tornado DDT, but Priest throws him off and turns him inside out with a clothesline. Priest hits a Crucifix Powerbomb and signals for the end. Mike’s Thoughts: Good match for Damian Priest. The guy has the size and look for the main roster. Looks kind of similar to Baron Corbin when he had hair in NXT (and without the stomach flab). I can see them doing something with this guy somewhere down the line.

NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler comes out to the stage. Half the crowd cheers her, half the crowd boos. Baszler says Yim is a badass. Yim fought her and took her to places no one else has brought her to. Baszler saw it in Yim’s eyes. She’s had to go to some dark depths to get to where she is. Baszler was thinking they don’t need to stand across from each other as enemies. Yim can stand right beside her. Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke get on the apron. Baszler says this is a cold business, but it’s nice and warm under the dragon’s wing. Baszler asks Yim if she’ll join her. Yim attacks Duke, so Shafir and Baszler double-team her. Referees run down and quickly separate the Horsewomen from Yim.
Mike’s Thoughts: I’m just not seeing it with Mia Yim. I don’t get the character and I feel like her in-ring work needs a lot of work. There was nothing about the TakeOver: Toronto match with Shayna Baszler that made me want to see that again, but it looks like that’s what they’re doing.
Later tonight, we’ll see Matt Riddle take on Killian Dain. Coming up next, Bronson Reed takes on Shane Thorne.

Reed makes a comeback with a bionic elbow and a Samoan Drop. Thorne quickly boots him back and charges, but Reed avalanches him before immediately following up with a senton splash. Reed avalanches him in the corner twice, and Thorne falls out of the ring. Reed grabs him and gets him in the ring. Reed goes to the top rope, but Thorne knocks him off. Mike’s Thoughts: Not a great match. Bronson Reed is just a little too big and looked a little sloppy at times. Perhaps he was too winded. Unless you’re big and versatile like an Otis, you’re probably not going to advance far in WWE. I don’t know if Reed, as it stands right now, is there. Good thing for him is there’s a lot of time to improve.
Velveteen Dream addresses Roderick Strong
NXT North American Champion Velveteen Dream is rolled out onto the stage by two women as he’s laying on a couch. Dream holds up his t-shirt and says it is $30. His glasses are $10. Dreaming retaining the North American Championship by pinning Pete Dunne? Priceless. No matter what — two men, the whole locker room — Dream likes it on top because that’s where the spotlight is. The spotlight is on Roderick Strong. If you want a match against Dream, you’ll have to give Dream an experience he’ll never forget. Don’t take too long because if you do… Dream over.

Mike’s Thoughts: Velveteen Dream is awesome.

Mike’s Thoughts: Yikes… that just wasn’t that great of a match. At times this just slogged along without any real heat despite the segments leading up to it being quite good. They looked out of sync at times and botch a few moves. The botch on the ring steps was pretty damn scary. This isn’t the end by a long shot I’d imagine, and I have to think it’ll get better than this.
Overall this was a pretty good episode of NXT, though the main event dragged quite a bit. Still, it’s only an hour long and easy to watch. I’m very curious to see what happens when this show goes to two-hours live on the USA Network in less than a month. It should be interesting. Until then, thanks for checking out the recap!
