As rumored late Monday night and later confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, WWE WrestleMania 26 was officially announced as being held on March 28, 2010 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. The stadium, which is the outdoor home for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, holds 63,400 for football and would hold more than 70,000 for a WrestleMania type event because of seats being placed on the floor (although most of the stadium would be blocked off because of the staging). Luxury suites would also hold another 7,400.
The stadium also has a retractable roof so the event would have an indoor feel and there would be no concern for weather elements like last year in Orlando. The stadium had been courting WWE officials for a few years now and had made WrestleMania 2010 t-shirts a couple of years back (which made print media in late 2007 where Wayne Gretzky was featured wearing one). Peter Sullivan, the GM of Global Spectrum which books events at the stadium, said they had been working several years to get the event. The press conference held on Tuesday was closed and available only to media featuring Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt and Stadium General Manager Peter Sullivan.
