El Luchador Coming to MTV
This week CMLL announced that their reality show “El Luchador” has been picked up by MTV Tr3s in the United States, but didn’t reveal the start date and if they would start with season one or just pick up with season 2 that’s airing now. “El Luchador” follows around several CMLL stars including Mistico II and Shocker during their everyday lives as well as while they wrestle and train.

Astro de Plata Seriously Injured
This past weekend young AAA star Astro de Plata suffered a spinal injury, injuring his vertebrae. During a pretty simple Wheel Barrow Bulldog spot Plata immediately looked to be panicking after he hit the mat and seemed to not be able to feel his legs. It’s being said that it will take quite some time for Plata to be able to walk again and likely a lot longer to wrestle again (if ever). A video of the injury can be seen here:

– Super Fly replaced Astro de Plata in the opener due to the injury Plata suffered this weekend. After the match Dorian Roldan & Konnan came out and fired Atomic Boy and then Argenis challenged Texano Jr. to a match. Texano came out and Argenis dropkicked him and then went for a hurricanrana, but Texano blocked it and Powerbombed him leaving him laying in the ring.
– After the 4th match Konnan & Dorian came back out and fired rudo referee Pepe Casas, but then Jaquin Roldan came out and fired both Konnan & Dorian. He then turned to the members of La Sociedad and said they would be fired too unless they removed Konnan & Dorian from the building! The rudos then turned on Konnan & Dorian and dragged them out of the arena! AAA is pushing this as the legit end of La Sociedad finally.
– Silver Kain ended up costing his team the loss in the Semi-Main and then he and Toscano fought after the match.

El Santo’s Anniversary
This past Tuesday (Feb. 05th) was the 29th Anniversary of the legendary El Santo’s death. His son El Hijo del Santo spoke at a ceremony at his father’s statue in Mexico, and presented a new gold plague for the statue (it originally had one there but it was stolen).

DVD Review: Tales of Masked Men (Documentary)

In October PBS aired special documentary focusing on the wild world of Mexican Lucha Libre directed and produced by filmmaker Carlos Avila. Now, the “Journey Through Lucha Libre” has made its way onto DVD.
Long before Rey Mysterio Jr. or Eddie Guerrero’s faces were splashed across millions of American’s televisions Lucha Libre was wowing legions of fans south of the border. “Tales of Masked Men” does an amazing job at delving into the history and tradition of the amazing form of wrestling including the culture and probably the biggest part of Lucha Libre, la mascara…the mask. The documentary features clips of literally dozens of some of the biggest stars in Lucha Libre from the independents all the way to the oldest wrestling orginzation in the world CMLL, but it focuses on telling the story of 3 luchadors. Those luchadors are mini estrella (midget wrestler) Mascarita Sagrada and two absolute legends in Lucha: Solar I (who continues to put on amazing matches to this day and trains some of the best young luchadors in Lucha today) and the most famous luchador of them all El Santo.
When not telling the stories of those 3 luchadors it really goes into the history of Lucha Libre from its birth of Lucha Libre in the early 1990’s to the Mascara contra Mascara (Mask vs. Mask) bouts and the culture and tradition that many things like the mask itself come from in Mexico. The best thing about this documentary (which other attempts at Lucha documentaries have missed on) is you don’t even have to be a fan of Lucha Libre coming into watching it to enjoy it. The documentary does such a fine job of detailing the history of Lucha Libre that even the most clueless person (about lucha) would come out with knowledge of the support and likely respect for it. It also gives you characters in Santo, Sagrada, & Solar to be invested in learning about and hearing their story. This is the first time I’ve seen a Lucha Libre documentary that actually takes the time to explore not just the luchadors and the masks but the traditions and the complex history of the amazing form of wrestling. If you’ve ever been interested in or wandered about the world where Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, or Sin Cara came from then this is the documentary to watch, and watch yourself likely become engulfed in Lucha Libre like myself.
The DVD itself comes with both English & Spanish audio (and subtitle) versions of the film and scene selection, but not much more in terms of special features, but the documentary itself (including the story telling and beautiful visuals) thankfully is the draw here.
