WWE Smackdown
September 23, 2011
Dayton, Ohio
Report by: Mike Tedesco of Wrestleview.com

The Smackdown video plays and we’re brought into the arena to see the Smackdown roster at ringside. In the ring is WWE’s Executive Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis. In Triple H’s absence, he has assembled the Smackdown roster to discuss the accusations that Triple H, as COO, has lost control of WWE. That chaos engulfed Raw and culminated in the dismissal of two premiere superstars – R-Truth and The Miz. Laurinaitis says he has changed his mind and believes that Triple H has control of the situation. Some superstars and fans may not agree, but on Monday night, when he looked into Triple H’s eyes, he saw resolve and determination. When Triple H gets here tonight, he hopes we see that in him, too.

Now, without further adieu, he’d like to announce the new World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry. Henry makes his way to the ring to a chorus of boos with his World Heavyweight Championship on his shoulder. The WWE superstars at ringside clear a path for him. Henry gets in the ring and shakes hands with Laurinaitis. Henry says it’s taken him fifteen years to earn this title, and it’ll take fifteen more before somebody takes it away from him. There is no man here that’s going to take what he has. Henry specifically calls out Ezekiel Jackson, saying he didn’t believe in Henry. Henry says Teddy Long didn’t believe. Now they believe.

Triple H’s music hits, and WWE’s COO makes his way to the ring. Triple H gets in the ring and offers his hand to Henry, but Henry won’t shake it. Triple H continues to hold it out. Henry just hands him the microphone.

Before Triple H can get a word out, Christian says, “Hold on,” and enters the ring. Christian says that on behalf of himself, for the roster and the entire world, he wants to say that Triple H is doing a great job as the COO of WWE. Christian says that Triple H’s treatment of the superstars on Smackdown has been exemplary, and he appreciates it. Triple H’s credo has been to “lead by example,” and as a former two-time World Heavyweight Champion, that’s Christian’s credo as well. Christian points to the roster at ringside and says they all look to him as a leader. Christian says he’s kind of a big deal. Even though “you know who” is the champion, Christian asks if Triple H can see Henry’s face on a billboard. Henry takes exception, but Triple H calms him down. Christian says that he’s the face of Smackdown, and for him to be the leader that he knows he can be, he kind of needs to be the World Heavyweight Champion. Christian says he deserves one more match to become the champion. Christian says after Hell in a Cell, when “you know who” chokes in his match, he’ll be the guy that will pick up the rings and lead Smackdown. He’ll embarrass and beat Randy Orton to become a three-time World Heavyweight Champion.

Triple H thanks the superstars for coming out, and assures them all that he is in complete control of Raw, Smackdown, and all of WWE. Triple H appreciates Christian stepping up as a leader. Triple H does lead by example, and he’ll give Christian that opportunity to do so in front of all these WWE superstars. Triple H means that literally as they’ll surround the ring in a lumberjack match. In that match, their leader will go one-on-one for the World Heavyweight Championship against “you know who,” Mark Henry. The winner of that match will face Randy Orton at Hell in a Cell. Christian does not look happy and turns around to go face-to-face with Mark Henry. Christian quickly gets out of the ring and stares at all the WWE superstars looking at him.

Sheamus is backstage putting his gear on. He’ll be in action next.

Christian asks if Khali understands anything he’s saying. Khali says he understands that Christian is small. Christian laughs and says he’s small like everyone is compared to Khali. -Commercial Break-

Matt Striker is backstage with Randy Orton. Striker says this is Orton’s first match since losing the title. Striker asks if he has a comment on facing Cody Rhodes. Orton simply says, “No”. Orton says his only thought has been going to hell. Like the song says, “Hell ain’t no bad place to be,” especially if that’s where you go to become World Heavyweight Champion, again. He’ll drag Mark Henry to the depths with him, or maybe Christian, who already has a permanent residence. Either way, when he comes back from Hell, he’ll be the World Heavyweight Champion.

The announcers talk about the Hell in a Cell event that, by the way, is only eight days away. They play a hype video for it.

Christian is backstage with Ezekiel Jackson. Jackson says he understands that Christian wants him to help beat Mark Henry tonight. Christian says he never said that. Christian says he’s been World Heavyweight Champion before, and Jackson hasn’t. Mike’s Thoughts

Simply put, this was one of the worst episodes of Smackdown in recent memory. Maybe this is why they stopped airing Superstars, because this was a two-hour episode of it. Every match could be considered a squash match. How much can you really say about seven squash matches? They were designed to make one person (or tag team) look good. Even Orton vs. Rhodes was a squash just because of what happened to Rhodes after. He didn’t exactly win convincingly, though. The only storyline furthered was a storyline from Raw that contended that Triple H had lost control of Raw.

The roster situation is scary for this show, as it has been for months. You could tell just how bad it was when they couldn’t surround the ring with just the roster of Smackdown. They had to include some Raw wrestlers and everyone from NXT. The only storyline is the storyline for the World Heavyweight Championship. The hard truth is, with the Raw Supershows going on right now, there is absolutely no reason to watch this show. Normally you can watch some quality, competitive matches, but there weren’t even any of those tonight. Hopefully it picks up next week because this was just terrible tonight. Even Mark Henry and all his awesomeness didn’t do anything for this show.

Final Rating: * 3/4
